Sylvia Earle is an underwater explorer and marine biologist who was born in the USA in 1935.
She became interested in the world’s oceans from an early age. As a child, she liked to stand on the
beach for hours and look at the sea, wondering what it must be like under the surface.
When she was 16, she finally got a chance to make her first dive, which motivated her to
become an underwater explorer. Since then, she has spent more than 6,500 hours under water, and has
led more than seventy expeditions worldwide. She has also made the deepest dive ever, reaching a
record – breaking depth of 381 metres.
In 1970, she became famous around the world when she became the caption of the first all-
female team to live under water. The team spent two weeks in an underwater “house”. The research
they carried out showed the damage that pollution was causing to marine life, and especially to coral
reefs. Her team also studied the problem of over- fishing. Fishing methods meant that people were
catching too many fish, Earle warned, and many species were in danger of becoming extinct.
Since then she has written several books and magazine articles in which she suggests ways of reducing
the damage that is being done to the world’s oceans. One way, she believes, is to reply on fish farms
for seafood, and reduce the amount of fishing that is done out at sea. Although she no longer eats
seafood herself, she realizes the importance it plays in our diets, It would be wrong to tell people they
should stop eating fish from the sea, she says. However, they need to reduce the impact they are
having on the ocean’s supplies.

The "Three Circles of World Englishes" is a model created by linguist Braj Kachru to show
how English is used around the world. It divides English speakers into three groups based on
how the language is used in different countries.
1. Inner Circle: This group includes countries where English is the native or first language.
Examples of these countries are the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada,
Australia, and New Zealand. In these places, English is used for daily communication,
education, business, and government. It is the language that most people grow up
speaking at home and in their communities.
2. Outer Circle: The countries in this circle use English as a second language. English is
not the native language, but it still has an important role, often due to the historical
influence of British colonization. Countries like India, Nigeria, Singapore, and the
Philippines are in this category. In these nations, English may be used in schools, for
government, or in business. It often serves as a bridge language between different ethnic
or linguistic groups.
3. Expanding Circle: This group includes countries where English is used as a foreign
language, like China, Japan, Russia, and Vietnam. People in these countries usually learn
English in school for international communication, travel, business, or education. English
is not used in everyday life, but it is becoming increasingly important as a global
language.
Kachru’s model helps to understand the spread of English worldwide and highlights how the
language has adapted to different cultural and social needs. It shows that English is not just the
property of native speakers, but a global language that has taken on many forms based on where
and how it is used.

Today, in many parts of the world, it is customary for people to shake hands upon meeting as
gesture of good will. Originally, however, the practice of shaking hands had a more practical purpose.
Shaking hands originated in medieval times. In those days, when a man came on a stranger, he
would often automatically reach for his sword with his right hand, in case he had to use the weapon to
defend himself. Sometimes, both parties found themselves circling around each other, weapons in
hand, until it was mutually agreed that the weapons could be laid aside. Then, the two parties extended
their right hands to show they had no weapons, and clasped them. This was the beginning of the
handshake.
The custom of shaking hands is not a universal one. In the Orient, people have, for centuries,

long, powerful legs that help them to run very fast when they feel threatened. Ostriches use their
wings to move themselves forward and to help them change direction.
Ostriches are native to Africa, where they still live in desert areas and dry, open grasslands
called savannahs. Ostriches can also be found in zoos all over the world. Humans have domesticated
ostriches, so now ostriches live on farms in over a dozen countries, including the United States, China,
India, Japan, Brazil and Costa Rica. They are raised for their meat, skin, and feathers.
Ostriches like to live in small groups called herds. The male ostrich is called a rooster; the

If you’re an Australian Facebook user who loves to share the news on your timeline, you may
have noticed something different recently: You can’t.
In the next few days, though, things should go back to normal. Less than a week after suddenly
banning news links for Australian users and shutting down Australian news pages to protest an
upcoming law, Facebook says it’s gotten reassurances from the Australian government that it won’t be
forced to pay publishers but will instead be given the chance to negotiate agreements with them —
which it’s already starting to do. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Facebook has agreed to
pay the major Australian media company Seven West Media for news content and is in negotiations
with another called Nine Entertainment.
Australia has now passed the News Media and Digital Platforms Mandatory Bargaining Code,
which could force Facebook and Google to pay publishers if they host their content. The law is a
response to years-long complaints from news outlets around the world about the role that Google and
Facebook — and their mammoth digital ad businesses — have played in the decline of journalism and
the decimation of its business model in the internet age. The two companies responded to the then-
potential law in very different ways: Google made deals with Australian news publishers; Facebook
decided to cut them off entirely.

Grandparents are becoming the forgotten generation, with youngsters now too busy to listen to
their stories from the olden days.
A study of 1,000 five- to 18-year-olds reveals just 21 per cent will visit their older relatives to
hear about how their lives were different in the past; such as where they worked, how it was living in
the war, and how they met the love of their life. More than half of youths have no idea what job their
grandparent did before retirement. Sadly, one in ten admit they are simply not interested in their
grandmother's or grandad's talents and interests, and a quarter only turn up to see them for pocket
money. But 23 percent claim the reason they don't know anything about their older relatives is that
they don't really get the chance to talk properly.
Researchers found that although 65 per cent of youngsters do see their grandparents every
single week, 37 per cent claim this is only because their parents want them to. And while 39 per cent
talk to their grandparents on the phone, Facebook or Skype at least once a week - 16 per cent once a
day - conversation is rarely focused on what they are doing or have done in the past. Four in 10 kids
have no idea what their grandparent's proudest achievements are, while 30 per cent don't know if they
have any special skills or talents. And 42 per cent don't spend any time talking about their
grandparent's history -and are therefore clueless about what their grandmother or grandad was like
when they were younger. Perhaps due to this lack of communication and respect, just six per cent of
children say they look up to their grandparents as a role model and inspiration.
36. Which of the following could be the main idea of the passage?
A. Young people's tendency to neglect their grandparents
B. Grandparents' loneliness in their old age
C. Grandparents' attitudes towards youngsters
D. Young people's disinterest in their grandparents' stories
37. According to the study in paragraph 2, which information is NOT true?
A. Nearby a quarter of young people don't have suitable opportunities to talk to older relatives.
B. Over 50% of the young don't know about their older relatives' past professions.
C. Most of youths visit their grandparents to ask for pocket money.
D. Merely one fifth of people in the survey keep asking about the bygone time of their grandparents.
38. According to the last paragraph, the proportion of the young voluntarily visiting their older family
members every week is _______.
A. 39% B. 27% C. 28% D. 65%
39. The word 'admit' in paragraph 2 is CLOSEST in meaning to ______.

Have you ever felt that there aren't enough hours in the day? These days we have to do our jobs,
look after our homes, save energy to help the environment, and do exercise to stay healthy! Like many
of us, Alex Gadsden never had enough time. He ran a business and a home and needed to lose weight.
So he decided to do something about it. He invented the cycle washer. The 29-year-old now starts each
day with a 45-minute cycle ride. He not only feels healthier but he saves on his energy bills and does
the washing too.
He said, "It gives the user a good workout. I've only used it for two weeks but I've already
noticed a difference." "I tend to get up at around six-thirty now and get straight on the cycle washer. I
keep it in the garden, so it's nice to get out in the fresh air. Afterwards, I feel full of energy. Then I
generally have breakfast and a shower and I really feel ready to start the day." The green washing
machine uses 25 litres of water a wash, and takes enough clothes to fill a carrier bag. He normally
cycles for 25 minutes to wash the clothes, and then for another 20 minutes to dry them. And it doesn't
use any electricity, of course.
Mr Gadsden, the boss of a cleaning company, believes his machine could become very popular.
With an invention which cleans your clothes, keeps you fit and reduces your electricity bill, he may
well be right.
36. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Ways to do the washing properly B. Cycling makes you healthier
