Cover the following:

• What are High-Rise Buildings? Define high-rise buildings and their common uses (residential,
commercial, etc.). (PAOLO)

High-rise buildings are types of structures that are typically bigger than the average height of
buildings in an urban area. They are defined as buildings ranging more than 23 meters in height
or typically more than an average number of stories of a building, ranging around 7 to 10 stories
. These types of structures are built to maximize the land use in dense urban areas.

Residential: This type of High-rise building is specifically designed for people to live in. There
are different types of High-rise building, offering different options such as apartments, private
condominiums, and a mixed-used spaces with residential area and retail or offices for the
convenience of users livin around the specific urban area.

Commercial
This type of High-rise buildings are designed specifically for businesses; these buildings provide
spaces used by people for offices,this building can be corporate headquarters, and business
outlets where people can have business, services, or retails, catering to the needs of
professionals and organizations in urban centers.

Hospitality
This type of High-rise building offers temporary services accommodating people or travelers.
This building can be either hotel with services like housekeeping, fine dining, and recreation,
ensuring comfort and convenience for both leisure and business purposes.

Mixed-Use
High-rise buildings in mixed used areas operate into two different functions within a single
building. It can be a combination of residential units, commercial spaces such as offices, retail
shops, or restaurants, and leisure areas like gyms, pools, or entertainment centers. This type
of high-rise building's main purpose is to create multifunctional spaces that offer to the user
convenience, reduce the need for vehicular transportation, healthy well-being,and
self-sustaining communities.
• Key Design and Engineering Concepts: Explain basics like wind resistance, load-bearing, and
earthquake safety. (KEVIN)

- When it comes to key design and engineering, high-rise buildings must be strong
enough to stand tall and remain safe in cities. They face challenges such as strong
winds, heavy loads, and earthquakes. High-rise buildings are designed to withstand
various forces while ensuring functionality and safety in urban environments. Key
considerations include wind resistance, achieved through aerodynamic shapes and
damping systems to reduce swaying, and load-bearing structures like reinforced
concrete cores and steel frames, which efficiently distribute weight. In earthquake-prone
areas, high-rise buildings incorporate flexible parts that can bend without breaking and
often include shock-absorbing layers, like springs, to handle ground shaking. Earthquake
safety is further enhanced through base isolation systems, flexible materials like steel,
and strict adherence to seismic design codes to minimize damage during earthquakes.

• Materials and Technology: Identify typical materials and recent tech advancements in high-rise
construction. (ALEX)

- High-rise construction combines durable materials and modern technology to create


safe, efficient, and sustainable buildings. Concrete, including high-strength (HSC),
self-consolidating (SCC), and ultra-high-performance (UHPC), is essential for
load-bearing elements like columns and walls due to its strength, durability, and
versatility. Steel, such as structural steel and reinforcing bars (rebars), provides flexibility
and strength, enabling buildings to withstand heavy loads and dynamic forces. Glass is
widely used for facades and windows, offering natural light and energy efficiency. Low-E
glass helps control heat transfer, while Smartglass can adjust transparency to manage
light and energy use.

Composite materials like fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP) are lightweight,


corrosion-resistant, and strong, making them ideal for reinforcement, while
Cross-laminated timber (CLT) provides a sustainable alternative to concrete and steel,
offering excellent strength and reducing the carbon footprint of buildings.

Recent advancements in technology, such as Building Information Modeling (BIM),


improve design accuracy and project management. 3D printing and prefabrication
speed up construction processes and reduce waste. Innovations like energy-generating
facades, smart building systems, and modern vertical transportation technologies, such
as high-speed elevators, make high-rise buildings more efficient, sustainable, and
adaptable to the needs of modern cities.
• Environmental Impact: Briefly discuss their impact on cities and sustainable practices.

- High-rise buildings significantly impact cities by optimizing land use, accommodating


population density, and reducing urban sprawl. However, they require a lot of resources
to build and operate, which raises energy consumption and carbon emissions. By
generating urban heat islands and wind tunnels, they can change microclimates. Green
roofs, energy-efficient systems, and renewable energy are examples of sustainable
measures that assist lessen these consequences. Additionally, employing sustainable
materials and passive design techniques can improve their environmental performance
and foster resilience in urban environments.

• Example Buildings: Describe two well-known high-rise buildings and any unique features.

1. The Gramercy Residences (Makati City)


Height: 250 meters, 73 floors

- The Gramercy Residences is a residential high-rise condominium located in Makati,


Philippines. It is often referred to as The Gramercy Residences in Century City. Along
with Shangri-La at the Fort in Manila and Discovery Primea, it is the fourth-tallest
structure in the Philippines as of 2023.

Unique Features
● Sky Park:
- The building features a Sky Park, located on the 36th floor, offering infinity
pools, gardens, and breathtaking views of the city.
● Interior Gardens:
- Several floors have interior gardens, bringing nature into high-rise living
and enhancing the ambiance.
● 24/365 Lifestyle:
- Residents enjoy amenities designed to operate round-the-clock, including
gyms, theaters, and restaurants.
● Modern Design:
- Its sleek and futuristic architectural style stands out in Makati’s skyline,
combining form and functionality.
● Amenities:
- It offers a range of high-end facilities, including a health club, a café, and
a wellness center, promoting luxury and convenience.
2. Taipei 101 (Taipei, Taiwan)
Height: 508 meters, 101 floors

- Originally called the Taipei World Financial Center, Taipei 101 is a 508.0-meter, 101-story
skyscraper located in Taipei, Taiwan. Taipei Financial Center Corporation is the owner.
When the skyscraper opened on December 31, 2004, it was formally recognized as the
highest structure in the world.

Unique Features:

● Tuned Mass Damper:


- A massive 660-ton tuned mass damper is suspended between the 87th and
92nd floors. This gold-painted sphere stabilizes the building by counteracting
movements caused by typhoons or earthquakes, making it one of the most
earthquake-resilient structures globally.
● Green Building Certification:
- Taipei 101 achieved LEED Platinum certification, highlighting its energy
efficiency, water conservation systems, and use of sustainable materials.
● Feng Shui Design:
- The building’s architecture integrates Feng Shui principles, such as its tiered
pagoda shape symbolizing prosperity and the auspicious number 8 repeatedly
appearing in its design.
● Ultra-Fast Elevators:
- The building’s elevators were once the fastest in the world, reaching speeds of
60.6 km/h (37.7 mph), allowing visitors to ascend from the 5th floor to the
89th-floor observation deck in just 37 seconds.
● Symbolism:
- Its design resembles a growing bamboo stalk, symbolizing growth, resilience,
and sustainability.
