REPORTED SPEECH

(Câu gián tiếp)

Definition:
1. Lời nói trực tiếp: là sự lặp lại chính xác những từ của người nói.
- Lời nói trực tiếp được đặt trong dấu ngoặc kép và sau động từ chính có dấu phẩy(,) hoặc dấu hai chấm(:).
- Đôi khi mệnh đề chính cũng có thể đặt sau lời nói trực tiếp.
Ex: “ I don’t like this party” Bill said.
2. Lời nói gián tiếp (indirect/reported speech) là lời tường thuật lại ý của người nói, đôi khi không cần phải
dung đúng những từ của người nói.
Ex: Bill said that he didn’t like that party.
A. STATEMENTS (Câu trần thuật): Cách chuyển từ câu trực tiếp sang gián tiếp
Cấu tạo:
S + said (that) + S +
V (lùi 1 thì)
S + told + O (that) + S +
V (lùi 1 thì)
Đổi động từ ở mệnh đề chính doäng töø say to (said to) ñoåi thaønh tell (told). Tuy nhieân,
neáu sau say (said) khoâng coù tuùc töø (object) thì khi ñoåi sang caâu giaùn tieáp ta
coù theå giöõ nguyeân ñoäng töø say (said).
Đổi các đại từ, tính từ sở hữu: nhaát chuû, nhi
- Ngoâi thöù nhaát (I, me, my, mine, we, us, our, ours) cuøng ngoâi vôùi chuû ngöõ
(subject) cuûa ñoäng töø töôøng thuaät.
- Ngoâi thöù hai (you, your, yours) cuøng ngoâi vôùi taân ngöõ (object).
- Ngoâi thöù ba (he, him, his, she, her, hers, they, them, their, theirs) khoâng
thay ñoåi.

A. REPORTED SPEECH with INFINITIVE (Câu gián tiếp với động từ nguyên thể):

 Không dùng to-inf sau một số động từ giới thiệu như: advise, insist, order, say, suggest… mà dùng that-
clause.
Ex: He said: “Let’s go out for dinner.”
 He suggested that we (should) go out for dinner.

 Trong tiếng Anh thân mật chúng ta có thể dùng say + to-inf trong câu tường thuật.
Ex: “I put the key on the shelf”, Nam said.
 Nam said to put the key on the shelf.

 Cấu trúc nghi vấn từ + to-inf là rất phổ biến.

Ex: I said: “Can you show me the way to use this camera, Jim?”
 I asked Jim how to use that camera.

B. REPORTED SPEECH with GERUND (Câu gián tiếp với động danh từ):
Cấu tạo:

Mệnh đề danh động từ (-ing clause) có thể được dùng thay cho mệnh đề that (that-clause) trong lời nói gián tiếp
sau các động từ giới thiệu: accuse of, admit, advise, apologise for, deny, dream of, insist on, look forward to,
mention, propose, prevent, recommend, report, suggest, think of…
Ex: “You stole my pen”.  He accused me of stealing his pen.
(He accused that I had stolen/ stole his pen)

 Một số động từ được theo sau bởi O + preposition + V-ing: accuse (of), congratulate (on), forgive (for),
prevent (from), stop (from), suspect (of), thank (for), warn (against)
Ex: “You shouldn’t buy a car.”  They warned us against buying a car.

 Một số ví dụ câu tường thuật với danh động từ:

 “Shall we go for a swim now?”  He suggested going for a swim.

 “What about playing football?”  They suggested playing football.
 “I know I have made a silly mistake.”  She admitted having made/ making a silly mistake.
 “I’ve read your personal letters.”  She admitted having read/ reading my personal letters.
 “I really need a holiday after the examination.”  The child insisted on having a holiday
after the examination.
