Why Do You Need a Heart?
Your heart is a very important part of your body. Without a beating heart you could not live. A
beating heart proves that a person is alive.
Your heart is a special type of muscles that keeps working without your brain telling it to do so. In
fact, you cannot control your heart at all. You can control how fast your arm and leg muscles work, but
you cannot make your heart pump faster or slower.
Your heart’s task is to pump blood around your body. It pumps blood that carries oxygen and
nutrients to where they are needed. It also pumps blood that carries waste to where it can be removed
from your body.
Your heart began beating before you were born and will not stop until you die. It beats between 60
and 100 times per minute for a healthy 11 year old child who is resting. It beats faster when you are
walking or running. In just one day, your heart beats more than 130.000 times.
Like any other muscle in your body, your heart will be stronger if you have a healthy lifestyle.
Regular exercises like running, swimming and aerobics are good for your health. You can also keep your
heart strong and healthy by eating foods like fruit and vegetables, meat and fish. If you take good of
your heart, it will take good care of you.
