www.montessoriforeveryone.com Instructions & Control Card
Instructions for PDF: print on 8 1/2 x 11 cardstock. Laminate for durability; cut cards
apart. Cut out control card, below (which uses the words), or use the picture control
card on the next page.
To use: show the child how to put out the blends cards along the top of the rug. If
they are new to blends work, you may want to say each blend with them first.
Have them pick up a picture card and say the name of the picture. Tell them to think
of the sound they hear at the beginning of the word, and try to find the correct letters
at the top. Repeat until all the cards are matched.
Control of error: child’s ability to hear the correct blend; each blend should have the
same number of pictures at the end; control cards (below and next page; kids can use
one or both—no need to cut the next page apart).
You may want to divide this set into 2 sets with 6 blends each. After working with each
set separately, the child might want to combine both sets together for a challenge.
After completing the work, the child can pick one picture and write the word on their
paper.

www.montessoriforeveryone.com Instructions
These cards are all pictures of Blue Series (consonant blend) words. They can be used in a variety of ways. One of the
most common is with the movable alphabet. Simply have the child select a few pictures and put them on a rug. Then
have them sound out the letters, placing each letter on the rug next to the picture.
Also, they are great story starters. Have a child place one on the rug and write a short story about it using the movable
alphabet.
For an older child, you might want to have them pick 10 cards and alphabetize them.
Here are the names of the pictures, from left to right, row by row (they are grouped randomly):
Set 1: drum, frog, ring, lamp; nest, flag, crib, moth; clip, path, stop, track.
Set 2: chest, drop, desk, chip; mask, brush, ship, fish; lock, clip, sheep, crab.
Set 3: chick, sock, sack, brick; truck, ball, spring, vest; stick, wick, clock, melt.
Set 4: plum, tack, hand, sled; bell, cliff, hatch, stem; hill, skunk, test, stamp.

Instructions: Print on cardstock and laminate. Cut cards apart. Please note that there are two sets
of each word/picture—one set to be cut apart (use guidelines) and one set to be kept together as
control cards.
If this seems like too many pictures and words at one time, you can divide this into two sets.
Have the child lay all the words out on a rug. Then have them match the pictures. Finally have
them put the control cards next to each picture/word pair and correct any that are wrong.
After that, ask the child to write one of the words on a piece of paper (they choose), and also
draw a picture to go with it if they desire.

www.montessoriforeveryone.com & Control Card
As children work, they may notice that rhyming pairs always have the same
vowel in the middle and the same consonant blend as an ending. It’s fine if
they notice and use it to their advantage.
In order to enable the children to successfully match the cards, it helps to mark
half of the rhyming cards in some way. One way is to use a hole punch to mark
one half of the cards with a hole in the corner. Or, when you put them on the
shelf, you can divide them into two appropriate groups and wrap each one
with a rubber band.
When you present the work, tell the kids to start by putting out all of one set (it
doesn’t matter which one). Then it’s much easier to match the other half of the
cards to the right one.

Creative Writing
Grab a card off the shelf when you need some creative writing prompts. Instruct the
kids to take at least 4-5 words off the card and use them in a story, essay, letter, etc.
You can write the spelling list on a chalkboard or dry erase board so everyone can see
them easily.
Quizzing a Partner
Each child selects a spelling card (any card they’d like; it doesn’t have to be that
week’s card) and they sit facing each other. They take turns reading off words to each
other and spelling them. When they finish, they have to write down any words they
missed.
Spelling Bee
This is a great classroom activity when you have 15-20 minutes to fill and you want to
do something as a group. Choose a couple of spelling cards. Have all the kids stand in
a semi-circle. Start with a child on the end. Read them a word and have them try to
spell it.
If you are working with a mixed age group, it’s helpful to choose three cards (pink se-
ries, blue series, green series) and ask each child a word based on their own spelling
level. One very nice thing about this activity is that the younger children get to hear
the older ones spelling difficult words.
Command Card Activities
Keep the Spelling Command Card with the spelling cards, and encourage the chil-
dren to choose it as part of their regular work.
Dictionary Work
When you are introducing children to the dictionary, use a spelling card and have
them look up each word on the card. When an older child moves from a beginning
dictionary to a bigger one, have them use a harder spelling card to familiarize them-
selves with the larger dictionary. Suggest that they write at least one definition that
they find.

Instructions for PDF: print on cardstock and laminate. Cut cards out.
These cards are to be used for review of the Blue Series Words. The child
should have completed lots of other Blue Series work first (matching, rhyming,
spelling).
Put the cards in a bowl or basket. Have the child pick 5-10 and read them. It’s
fun for a couple of kids to sit in a circle and go around, each taking 1-2 cards
out at a time and reading them.
A nice challenge for an older child would be to have them alphabetize 10 cards
at a time.

To use, have the child take one word list and read and spell each word, one at a time. Once they are fa-
miliar with the words, they can hand the list to another child or adult and spell each word as it is read to
them.
Two children can each take a word list and sit facing each other, taking turns reading words to each
other and spelling the words out loud.
