4 (a) In which two ways, according to Pi, was his name odd? (i) His name was odd because it
was after a swimming pool. (ii) His name was odd because his parents never liked large
expanses of water.

(b) Pi’s uncle was ‘a great storyteller’. What was the topic of his favourite story? His
favourite stories were about swimming competitions and swimming pools in France.

5 (a) Explain in your own words what prompted one of Pi’s classmates to make fun of his
name. One of Pi’s classmates made fun of his name because it sounded unusual and amusing,
resembling the word for a swimming pool in French.

(b) One of Pi’s classmates pointed at him. In what way did the other children show their
‘cruelty’? The other children showed their cruelty by laughing at him.

(c) Pick out and write down the single word which shows that Pi dealt with ‘the cruelty of

6 (a) The lessons ‘started to stretch out like a desert’. What impression of the lessons is given
by this description? The description suggests that the lessons became long, tedious, and
difficult to endure.

(b) Why did the teachers wipe ‘their foreheads with their handkerchiefs’? The teachers wiped
their foreheads because it was hot.

(c) ‘I anticipated the insult’. What was the insult he anticipated? He anticipated being mocked
for his name.

(d) Explain fully how Pi reacted when he ‘anticipated the insult’. Pi reacted by changing his
mind and deciding not to answer the question, leading the teacher to look at him curiously,
wondering why he was no longer participating.

7 (a) Give two pieces of evidence which suggest that Ravi had ‘a good reputation’ in the
school. (i) Ravi was already known and respected in the school. (ii) Ravi was the elected
captain of the school cricket team.

(b) In what way did Pi suffer because he lived ‘by the sea’? Pi suffered because people who
lived by the sea saw swimmers as odd, making his talent as a swimmer unimportant.

8 (a) Pi had a ‘plan’. Without using the words of the passage, explain in no more than fifteen
words what the plan was. He planned to change his name to "Pi" by introducing it to all his
teachers.

(b) Why do you think Pi ‘hurried’ to the chalkboard? Pi hurried to the chalkboard to
assertively introduce his new name before any mocking could start.

9 (a) Why do you think Pi took ‘every chance’ he could to answer questions that day? Pi
wanted to reinforce his new name and ensure everyone used it.

(b) What do you think Pi’s brother ‘might have been about to say’? Pi’s brother might have
been about to tease him or make a joke about his new name.
