people, it is really one of my fears to talk in front of a crowd since it makes me anxious
and nauseated, I am insecure because I am not confident enough to deliver a speech in
public just like my other friends and classmates would, but I am slowly facing my fears,
although this is my fear I already have fair shares in public speaking since I was in grade

Principles of Public Speaking

Public speaking is no longer just an option but a necessity in today's world. With the rise of
technology, people can easily share their thoughts and ideas with others through various
platforms like social media. So, effective speaking skills have become essential to get noticed
and make a positive impact. The principles of public speaking are not just about delivering a
good speech but about connecting with your audience and leaving a lasting impact. It's about
being relatable, authentic, and inspiring. Effective communication is at the core of all the
principles of public speaking. It's not just about what you say but how you say it and how well
you can communicate your message to others. Here are the five golden principles of public
speaking according to Rohit Wankhade’s blog:
1. Be Relatable to The Audience. Being relatable to your audience is crucial to public
speaking effectiveness. Your audience will be more engaged with you and likely to
remember what you said if you can establish a personal connection with them. You
should customize your speech to the particular audience you're speaking to in order to be
relatable. Spend some time learning about your audience's interests, worries, and wants
before you start composing your speech. Take into account your audience's age, gender,
occupation, cultural background, and any other elements that can affect how they
interpret your message. Speak to them in a language they can comprehend. Use relatable
stories and incidents to illustrate your points.
2. Don’t Run After Perfection. There is no need for perfection in a great speech. Many
speakers try to put too much pressure on themselves to give a flawless performance.
Also, aiming for perfection increases stress and pressure, which makes the entire process
harder. Instead of attempting to be perfect, concentrate on the message you want to get
over and emotionally connect with the audience. Being genuine and able to connect with
the audience is more crucial than being flawless in order to be a truly outstanding
speaker.
3. Visualize your Success. Visualizing your success is a powerful component of public
speaking. Creating a clear mental image of yourself succeeding in your speech or
presentation helps to reduce anxiety and build confidence.
4. Aim to Inspire People. It's crucial to have a certain objective in mind when giving a
speech. Your speech should be focused on increasing listener awareness and insight.
Delivering a message that encourages your audience to do something can help you
engage with them on a deeper level. Speak from the heart and be genuine if you want to
truly inspire your audience. Your excitement will spread if you are really interested in
your audience and passionate about your subject. You may provide your audience a fresh
perspective on their own lives and problems by sharing your own experiences, skills, and
expertise. To engage your audience, you can utilize narrative, humor, and other
strategies. You will make a significant impact and leave a favorable impression on the
people listening if you attempt to inspire them. You might be able to help them
overcome challenges, realize their goals, and achieve their full potential. This is when
public speaking truly succeeds.
5. Discipline is the Secret to Excellency. The three P's of public speaking are planning,
practice, and presentation. They include planning, arranging, and practicing your speech,
concentrating on your delivery, and interacting with your audience. So to accomplish
these three goals, discipline is necessary. You must exercise discipline in all areas of your
presentation, including the content of your speech and the control of your body language.
Repeatedly practice your speech until you are at ease and assured in your delivery. Be
mindful of your vocal variation, nonverbal cues, and word choice. Being disciplined also
entails taking the time to evaluate your performance and pinpoint areas that require
improvement. Make the most of your errors to improve your public speaking abilities.
Keep in mind that developing discipline requires consistent work.
Ethics of Public Speaking

Being an ethical speaker is necessary because it shows and proves your credibility as a
speaker, if you are credible then your listeners will easily trust you, your audience not only needs
to believe in your words and message, but they need to trust you as the message giver. To engage
in unethical behavior when speaking only erodes that trust. It is easy to become an ethical
speaker if we follow the five basic principles which are the following.

1. Trustworthiness. To persuade an audience, you must first earn their trust and
establish your credibility as a speaker. Speaking with credibility involves
demonstrating to your audience that you have their best interests in mind, that you are
an expert on the issue at hand, and that the data you rely on to back up your claims is
trustworthy. For example, a speaker is talking in front of the audience and knows how
to interact well with them, it is evident that he knows his speech well and it is
supported with credible facts and even creates adlibs to engage with the audience, the
speaker also knows how to use gestures appropriately and delivers the speech in a
calm and not a coercive manner. This just show that the speaker truly is trustworthy.

2. Integrity. If listeners don't trust you, they will never truly open themselves to your
influence. Honesty is a key component here, of course. But for your speeches and
presentations to rise above the ordinary, the level of honesty you generate must
achieve actual integrity. Audiences, in other words, will only be willing to be changed
by a speaker who walks the walk. To reach, impress, and persuade audiences—to get
them to buy into your leadership—you must be whole, in the sense of integrating
your personality and values into your performance. To do so is to achieve a form of
integrity that every leader needs to be a great speaker. For example, a speaker speaks
with integrity by being honest, he/she communicates openly and honestly in every
instance, he/she shows gratitude to the audience and is ready to take responsibility for
his/her words. He/she also properly cites the sources which is used in composing the
speech to avoid plagiarism and misunderstanding.

3. Respect for Others. There are many ways to show respect for others, and it is
important to be aware of them in order to create and maintain positive relationships
with the people around us. Respect means being respectful of your audience's
opinions, beliefs, and values. Don't insult, mock, or ridicule anyone or anything.
Don't assume that everyone agrees with you or shares your perspective. Don't
interrupt, argue, or dominate the conversation. Listen to feedback, acknowledge
different points of view, and thank your audience for their time and input. By being
respectful, you show your audience that you respect their diversity and dignity. An
example of showing respect for others in public speaking is when a speaker uses
polite and appropriate language which also includes speaking calmly and not raising
their voice, using appropriate terms for people based on their rank or position in life,
and avoiding swear words. A speaker that interacts with the audience without
discrimination and by being engaging, you show your audience that you respect their
attention and participation.

4. Dignity in Conduct. Always allow the audience to maintain their dignity in public
speaking. To accomplish this goal, learn to listen to what is not being said. Whether
you’re speaking to an audience of one or one thousand, before you can persuade,
always dignify the audience in what you say and the way you say it. Your listening
comes from watching their response as they listen to you. For example, a speaker
maintaining dignity in public speaking enhances the ability to persuade and motivate
an audience.

5. Truthfulness in the Message. Access to reliable and accurate facts is critical for
making decisions about how to communicate and act ethically, because of the critical
role that reliable and accurate facts and information play in human decision making,
truthful and honest communication is a foundation for competent and ethical
communication. Though all speeches should be based on a foundation of trust and
honesty, the integrity of any message is only as good as the person sending it. For
example, when watching the news, I often find myself wondering if the person
speaking is telling the truth, it is also the same for the audience to wonder if the
speaker’s message is somewhat true or not which shows how important it is to
compose a message accurately and reliable.
