GATHERING AROUND THE WORD
Call to Worship
All: We gather together today to worship the one who created
us.
One: The One who calls us,
All: The One who equips us,
One: The One who loves us without end.
All: With joyful hearts, let us worship God.
Prayer of Adoration
Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires, known,
and from whom no secrets are hid; Cleanse the thoughts of our
hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly
love you and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ
our Lord. Amen

*Hymn
Blessed Assurance, Jesus Is Mine!
Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!
Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
born of his Spirit, washed in his blood.
Refrain
This is my story; this is my song,
praising my Savior all the day long;
This is my story; this is my song,
praising my Savior all the day long.
Perfect submission, perfect delight,
visions of rapture now burst on my sight;
angels descending, bring from above
echoes of mercy, whispers of love.
refrain
Perfect submission, all is at rest;
I in my Savior am happy and blest,
watching and waiting, looking above,
filled with his goodness, lost in his love.

Prayer of Confession
Gracious God, Creator of all that is: Hear our prayer. There are
chasms in our lives, sometimes deep valleys that separate us
From one another and from You. We confess that we have
allowed those rifts to grow and sometimes we have fear of what
to do to bring reconciliation within us and between others. Mend
us, we prayer, and make us new creations through you.

PROCLAIMING THE WORD
Prayer of Illumination
Reading from the Old Testament
Nehemiah 9:10-17
You performed signs and wonders against Pharaoh and all his
servants and all the people of his land, for you knew that they acted
insolently against our ancestors. You made a name for yourself that
remains to this day. 11 And you divided the sea before them, so that
they passed through the sea on dry land, but you threw their pursuers
into the depths like a stone into mighty waters. 12 Moreover, you led
them by day with a pillar of cloud and by night with a pillar of fire, to
give them light on the way in which they should go. 13 You came down
also upon Mount Sinai and spoke with them from heaven and gave
4
them right ordinances and true laws, good statutes and
commandments, 14 and you made known your holy Sabbath to them
and gave them commandments and statutes and a law through Moses
your servant. 15 For their hunger you gave them bread from heaven,
and for their thirst you brought water for them out of the rock, and you
told them to go in to possess the land that you swore to give them. 16
“But they, our ancestors, acted presumptuously and stiffened their
necks and did not obey your commandments; 17 they refused to obey
and were not mindful of the wonders that you performed among them,
but they stiffened their necks and appointed a leader to return to their
slavery in Egypt. But you are a God ready to forgive, gracious and
merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and you did
not forsake them.
The Holy Bible: New Revised Standard Version (National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA, 1989)

Reading from the New Testament

1 Corinthians 13:1-13
If I speak in the tongues of humans and of angels but do not have love,
I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 And if I have prophetic
powers and understand all mysteries and all knowledge and if I have
all faith so as to remove mountains but do not have love, I am nothing.
3 If I give away all my possessions and if I hand over my body so that
I may boast[a] but do not have love, I gain nothing. 4 Love is patient;
love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant 5 or rude. It
does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable; it keeps no record of
wrongs; 6 it does not rejoice in wrongdoing but rejoices in the truth. 7
It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all
things. 8 Love never ends. But as for prophecies, they will come to an
end; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will come to
an end. 9 For we know only in part, and we prophesy only in part, 10 but
5
when the complete comes, the partial will come to an end. 11 When I
was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a
child. When I became an adult, I put an end to childish ways. 12 For now
we see only a reflection, as in a mirror, but then we will see face to face.
Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully
known. 13 And now faith, hope, and love remain, these three, and the
greatest of these is love.
The Holy Bible: New Revised Standard Version (National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA, 1989)

One: This is the Word of the Lord.

All: Thanks be to God!

Sanctuary
Lord, prepare me to be a sanctuary,
pure and holy, tried and true.
With thanksgiving, I'll be a living
sanctuary for you. x2
Reading from the Gospel
Matthew 22:34-40
When the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they
gathered together, 35 and one of them, an expert in the law, asked
him a question to test him. 36 “Teacher, which commandment in the
law is the greatest?” 37 He said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your
God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’
38 This is the greatest and first commandment. 39 And a second is
like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 On these two
commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”
The Holy Bible: New Revised Standard Version (National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA, 1989)

“Turning to Love”
RESPONDING TO THE WORD
*Affirmation of Faith The Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived
by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under
Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended
into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended
into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father
Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the
dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the
communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of
the body; and the life everlasting. Amen
*Hymn
Breathe on Me, Breath of God
Breathe on me, Breath of God;
fill me with life anew,
that I may love what thou dost love,
and do what thou wouldst do.

7
Breathe on me, Breath of God,
until my heart is pure,
until with thee I will one will,
to do and to endure.
Breathe on me, Breath of God,
till I am wholly thine,
until this earthly part of me
glows with thy fire divine.
Breathe on me, Breath of God,
so shall I never die,
but live with thee the perfect
life of thine eternity.

The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom
come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day,
our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil, for Thine
is the Kingdom, and the power and the glory, forever. AMEN!
GOING OUT INTO THE WORLD

*Hymn
Every Time I Feel the Spirit
Refrain
Every time I feel the Spirit
moving in my heart I will pray.
Yes, every time I feel the Spirit
moving in my heart I will pray.
Upon the mountain, when my Lord spoke,
out of God's mouth came fire and smoke.
Looked all around me, it looked so fine,
till I asked my Lord if all was mine.
refrain

it chills the body but not the soul.

It runs to heaven and then right back.
