MANUFACTURING PROCESS OF PLYWOOD

• Log Selection and Preparation: Logs are selected based on quality and size,
typically softwoods or hardwoods.
• Log Conditioning: Logs are soaked in hot water or steamed to soften them.
• Veneer Peeling: Veneers are removed from conditioned logs, cut into desired
lengths and widths.
• Veneer Drying: Peeled veneers are dried to reduce moisture content to 6-10%.
• Veneer Grading and Repair: Veneer dried veneers are inspected and graded,
defects are repaired.
• Veneer Stacking and Gluing: Veneers are stacked in alternating grain directions,
with adhesive applied between layers.
• Pressing: The stacked veneers are pressed to form a solid plywood panel.
• Trimming and Sanding: The bonded plywood panels are trimmed and sanded
for a smooth surface.
• Finishing and Grading: The finished panels are inspected and graded, some
may receive additional treatments.
• Packaging and Shipping: The graded panels are packaged and ready for
shipping
STORAGE OF PLYWOOD
• PROPER STROAGE OF PLYWOOD
GUIDELINES
• Store plywood in a dry environment to prevent moisture absorption, preventing
warping, swelling, and mold growth.
• Lay plywood sheets flat on a level surface to prevent bending or warping.
• Elevate plywood off the ground using pallets, blocks, or lumber for air circulation
and moisture protection.
• Cover plywood with a tarp or plastic sheeting to protect it from dust, dirt, and
moisture exposure.
• Ensure adequate ventilation in the storage area to maintain consistent
temperature and humidity levels.
• Avoid direct sunlight to prevent uneven drying and warping.
• Stack multiple sheets evenly to avoid bowing or bending.
• Store plywood in a climate-controlled environment for long-term storage.
• Ensure weight distribution across the stack to prevent sheet crushing or
bending.
• Regularly inspect stored plywood for signs of moisture, mold, pests, or damage.
QUALITY OF PLYWOOD
• DEPENDS ON FOLLOWING FACTORS

Grade of Plywood:
• A Grade: High-quality veneer with minimal defects.
• B Grade: Minor defects repaired with fillers.
• C Grade: Noticeable defects.
• D Grade: Lowest quality, with visible defects.

Core Quality:
• Veneer Core: Made from thin layers of wood.
• Lumber Core: High strength and screw-holding capability.
• MDF Core: Medium-density fiberboard core.
• Particleboard Core: Economical but less durable.

Bonding Adhesive:
• Interior (MR - Moisture Resistant): Suitable for indoor use.
• Exterior (WBP - Weather and Boil Proof): Suitable for outdoor use.
• Marine Grade: Uses high-quality, water-resistant adhesives and
veneers.
QUALITY OF PLYWOOD
Thickness and Layers:
• Thickness can range from 1/8 inch to 1 1/4 inches.
• Higher quality plywood generally has an odd number of layers.

Surface Finish:
• Sanded Plywood: Smooth and ready for finishing or painting.
• Unsanded Plywood: Rough surface.

Veneer Quality:
• High-quality plywood has consistent veneers free from defects.
• Face veneers should be free from overlapping or gaps.

Moisture Content:
• Quality plywood should have a balanced moisture content.
• Certification: Look for certifications from recognized organizations.

Edge Sealing:
• High-quality plywood often has sealed edges.
USES OF PLYWOOD

Plywood: A WIDELY USED BUILDING MATERIAL

• Construction: Used for structural support, formwork, interior walls and ceilings, and
exterior walls.
• Furniture Making: Used for cabinets, shelves, tables, desks, and seating furniture.
• Decorative Applications: Used for wall paneling, laminates, and veneers.
• Cabinetry and Millwork: Used for kitchen and bathroom cabinets, built-in furniture,
and custom millwork.
• Marine Applications: Used in boat building, docks, piers, and waterfront structures.
• Packaging: Used in shipping crates, pallets, boxes, and containers.
• Flooring: Used as an underlayment for various types of flooring and as finished
flooring.
• Automotive and Transportation: Used in vehicle interiors and trailer beds.
• Industrial Applications: Used as a base material for signs, partitions, and dividers.
• Soundproofing: Used in making acoustic panels for soundproofing in studios,
theaters, and auditoriums.
• Exterior Projects: Used for outdoor furniture, garden structures, and playhouses
and sheds.
JOINERIES
1. Butt Joint
The end of a timber board is called the “butt.” Woodworkers
forming this joint are placing two ends together at a right angle
to create a corner. Mechanical fasteners such as nails or
screws are necessary to preserve this joinery.

2. Mitered Butt Joint (Miter Joint)

This joinery option connects two butts that get cut at
an angle. The advantage of using this approach
involves the strength of the corner. You receive a
seamless look that does not show any end grain.

3. Half-Lap Joint
Woodworkers use this joint to join two boards together
to create a flush surface. It happens most often when
a connection is needed in the middle of the timber,
although corner connections are also possible.
TOOLS USED FOR CUTTING PLYWOOD
1: Using a Circular Saw

A circular saw is an electrically powered hand-held device that

contains a circular blade with serrated edges. The rotation of the
blade is used to cut the wood to different depths across the piece.
The blade cuts wood in either straight or curved lines and produces
minimal tearing at the edges.
2: Using a Table Saw

A table saw consists of an electrically charged circular blade that is

attached to a table. To cut plywood with a table saw, you have to slide
the workpiece on top of the rotating saw while keeping it completely
straight.

3: Using a Jigsaw

A jigsaw is a hand-held device with a thin serrated blade attached. The blade is
typically up to an inch wide, while the length varies according to the type of cut
needed. The jigsaw is ideal for cutting plywood into circular or curved shapes. Since
it is handheld the motion of the jigsaw is controlled by the woodworker, making it
difficult to carve straight lines. It is not preferable for making long straight cuts that
are better served using a table saw.
PRECAUTIONS FOR USING/
HANDLING PLUWOOD
• Moisture Control: Avoid excessive moisture and store plywood in a dry, well-
ventilated area.
• Handling: Use proper lifting techniques to avoid back injuries.
• Safety Gear: Wear safety glasses and a dust mask when cutting, sanding, or
machining plywood.
• Fastening: Pre-drill holes when nailing or screwing into plywood to prevent
splitting.
• Finishing: Seal edges of plywood with paint, varnish, or edge banding.
• Fire Safety: Keep plywood away from open flames, sparks, and high heat
sources. Consider using fire-retardant plywood for fire resistance.
• Health and Safety: Use low-emission or formaldehyde-free plywood for indoor
applications.
• Dust Control: Use dust collection systems or vacuum up sawdust immediately.
• Weight Considerations: Ensure structures made with plywood are adequately
supported to prevent collapse or sagging.
• Surface Protection: Protect the surface of plywood sheets from scratches, dents,
and other damage during handling and storage.
