1.1 INTRODUCTION
ADCO has been chartered by their shareholders to expand sustainable crude oil production from
its current level of 1.4 million barrels oil per day (MMBOPD) to 1.8 MMBOPD.
Accordingly, ADCO has undertaken projects to develop its marginal fields to help achieve this
target, which involves increasing production at existing Bab & North-East Bab oil fields and
putting on production some undeveloped reservoirs in its portfolio, namely Mender.
Mender is a new undeveloped field located about 50 Km east of Qusahwira oil field and
approximately 240 km south-southeast of Abu Dhabi city. The location of Mender field is
depicted in Figure 1-1 below:

As per the development plan, Mender field will be developed by drilling a total of
81 wells (48 ESP lifted Oil Producers, 33 Water Injectors). The new facilities shall
be designed to handle a sustainable production of 20,000 BOPD. Water injection
required to maintain reservoir pressure in LBM, TZA and TZB reservoirs. This shall
be achieved by installing four (4) Water Injection Clusters and building a WI
network feeding the injectors. Production from Mender reservoirs will be exported
to Qusahwira facilities located some 50km away to the West for processing and
export to Asab.
This document defines the technical basis, parameters and criteria used for sizing calculation
of Electrical cables for the New FEED Project for Mender Phase-I

AC Alternating Current
Wherever the requirements in this specification are in conflict with any of the standards, the
requirements under this specification shall be binding.
In case of conflicting requirements amongst any of the specified standards, the standard
having the most stringent requirement shall be governing.
In such cases VENDOR shall provide its interpretation in writing of the most stringent
requirement for CONTRACTOR’s and COMPANY’s approval utilizing a Technical Query
sheet.
4. SERVICE CONDITIONS
Following maximum air temperatures for design of various equipment under shade (or
indoors) shall be considered:
Design Temperature for
Electrical Motors & Generators: 55.0°C
Design Temperature
for Electrical Equipment : a) Outdoor 55.0°C
b) Indoor (in redundant air-
Conditioned substations) 40.0°C

A summary of the utilization voltages and the system wiring for the various consumers are as
given below:
Mains Power

Voltage : Plus 10 % and minus 20 %
Frequency : Plus and minus 5 %
During motor starting or restarting condition the voltage drop at other switchboards shall not
fall below 90%.
The above voltage and frequency variations shall not affect the equipment operation.
5. CABLE INSTALLATION
Cables shall be sized in accordance with the following criteria and the relevant standards
listed in Section 2 of this document.
1. Admissible current ampacity of cables including derating factors.
2. Admissible voltage drop
3. Short circuit ratings of supply system and through fault condition of protective devices
The maximum conductor operating temperature for XLPE insulated cables is considered as
90°C as per IEC.
The current carrying capacities for MV XLPE CU Single core and multicore cables (refer to
Appendix-1.2) as shown in Table-B.2 and Table B.6 of Annex B referred in IEC 60502-2 are
with the following parameters
Ambient air temperature : 30°C
Ground thermal resistivity : 1.5 K.m/W
Ground temperature : 20°C
Depth of laying of cables : 0.8m
Max. Conductor Operating temperature : 90°C
The current carrying capacities for LV XLPE cables (Multi core and single core – 600/1000V),
as shown in Appendix 1.1 (upto 630Sqmm) referred in ERA report are assumed to be
calculated with the following parameters:
Ambient air temperature : 25°C
Ground thermal resistivity : 1.2 K.m/W
Ground temperature : 15°C
Depth of laying (LV Cables) : 0.5m
Max. Conductor Operating temperature : 90°C
Appendix – 2 & 3 gives the various Correction Factors under different conditions like variation
of Ground temperature, Soil thermal resistivity, grouping of cables and Variation in Ambient
temperature.
Based on the installation conditions, the following derating factors have been considered.
6.2.1 FOR LV CABLES (LAID IN GROUND) As per Appendix 3, A3.1, A3.3, A3.4 & A3.6
Single Core Cables as per Appendix 2, A2.2, A2.3, A2.5 & A2.10
Three Core Cables as per Appendix 2, A2.1, A2.3, A2.7 & A2.9
For MV cables (Single Core Cables) as per Appendix 2, A.2.1 & A2.13
Note:
1. For MV and LV cables which are directly buried in ground for some part of their length,
current carrying capacities for cables directly buried in ground shall be considered, for
the purpose of cable sizing.
2. All Cable laid inside substation building shall be laid on cable trays.
3. All substation interconnecting cables shall be laid in cable trays
Single Core
Overall admissible ampacity correction factor for Cables Laid in Air is considered to be 0.65
for LV / MV Cables
The voltage drop in a.c cables shall not be more than 5% based on continuous maximum
current loading and rated voltage.
The Appendix – 4 gives the resistance and reactance of various sizes of cables.

Based on the above, the short circuit withstand of cables shall be calculated based on
following short circuit rating and fault clearing time as below:
1. 33kV cable (Incoming feeder) to 33kV Switchgear : 3 sec
33kV cable (Outgoing feeder) with instantaneous o/c

3. 33kV OHL Cable : 1 Sec
4. 3.3kV cable (Incoming feeder) to 3.3kV Switchgear : 3 sec

The cable copper/XLPE cable size required for various short circuit current and clearance
times are as given in Appendix 5.
The cable sizing shall be based on selection of the largest cable size meeting the following
requirement
1. Short circuit capacity requirements as discussed in section 6.4 and Appendix 5.
2. Voltage drop and current carrying capacity requirements as mentioned in sections 6.3
& 6.2 and evaluated in tabular form in Appendix 7.
7.1 MV CABLES
The cable sizing shall be based on selection of the largest cable size meeting the following
requirement.
1. Short circuit capacity requirements as discussed in section 6.4 and Appendix 5.
2. Voltage drop and current carrying capacity requirements as mentioned in sections 6.3
& 6.2 and evaluated in tabular form in Appendix 7.
3. Sample Manual Calculation as in Appendix 6.
The HVMV Cable sizing for motors feeders shall be based on selection of the largest cable
size meeting the following requirements:
1. Short circuit capacity requirements as discussed in section 6.4 and Appendix 5.
2. Voltage drop and current carrying capacity requirements as mentioned in sections 6.3
& 6.2 and evaluated in tabular form in Appendix 7.
3. The derating factor for HVMV Cables in ground for Single core cable is 0.46
4. The derating factor for HVMV Cables in ground for Three core cable is 0.50
5. The derating factor for HVMV Cables in Air for Single core cable is 0.65
6. The derating factor for HVMV Cables in Air for Three core cable is 0.65
7. Locked Rotor current of 500% is taken into calculations.
The HVMV Cable sizing for power feeders shall be based on selection of the largest cable
size meeting the following requirements:
1. Short circuit capacity requirements as discussed in section 6.4 and Appendix 5.
2. Voltage drop and current carrying capacity requirements as mentioned in sections 6.3
& 6.2 and evaluated in tabular form in Appendix 7.
3. The derating factor for HVMV Cables in ground for Single core cable is 0.46
4. The derating factor for HVMV Cables in ground for Three core cable is 0.50
5. The derating factor for HVMV Cables in Air for Single core cable is 0.65
6. The derating factor for HVMV Cables in Air for Three core cable is 0.65

sections 6.3 & 6.2 and evaluated in tabular form in Appendix 7 with cables in ground.
3. The derating factor for HVLV Cables in ground is 0.36
4. The derating factor for HVLV Cables in Air is 0.65
5. Locked Rotor current of 600% is taken into calculations.
The LV Cable sizing for power feeders shall be based on selection of the largest cable size
meeting the following requirements:
1. Short circuit capacity requirements as discussed in section 6.4 and Appendix 5.
2. Voltage drop and current carrying capacity requirements as mentioned in sections 6.3
& 6.2 and evaluated in tabular form in Appendix 7 with cables in ground and in air.
3. The derating factor for HVLV Cables in ground is 0.36
4. The derating factor for HVLV Cables in Air is 0.65
Cables sizes are calculated and cable selection chart is prepared in Appendix-7 ready for
selection of cables for all voltage level applied for Mender Phase-I Project.
