San Francisco is one of the USA’s most exciting cities. Millions of tourists visit
every year and they don’t go home without visiting Chinatown – a popular
tourist attraction. San Francisco has got a large Chinese-American population
and it has got the largest Chinatown outside Asia. Chinatown became a popular
tourist attraction over 150 years ago.
The best place to start your tour of Chinatown is at its Dragon Gate. This
extraordinary gate with its dragons and guard dog statues was a gift from the
People’s Republic of China to San Francisco in 1969. Stop to take a photo and
then walk down Grant Avenue, the main street. It’s also the oldest street in San
Francisco and it’s got many exotic buildings. Even the street lamps look like
pagodas with dragons’ tails. The shops are full of unique things, and restaurants
serve delicious Chinese food. As you go deeper into Chinatown, you see busy
fruit, vegetable, meat and fish markets.
Visit the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory too. Visitors taste their delicious
biscuits and learn about their future. This amazing factory makes 20,000
biscuits every day. Believe it or not, only two women work there and they make
each biscuit by hand!
The best time to visit Chinatown is in February for the Chinese New Year
celebrations. For two weeks, this part of San Francisco is really lively. There
are music events, flower and street fairs and the Miss Chinatown USA
competition.
