COURSE OBJECTIVES: 1. To impart the basic Knowledge of various components of automobile engines. PRE-REQUISITIES: COURSE CONTENT: S. No. 1 Description Introduction Concept of internal and external combustion engine and their comparison, Classification of IC engine as per stroke, cycle of operation. Types of fuels used, method of air charging, types of ignition, types of cooling, cylinder arrangement, engine location. Construction Details Specifications, functions, working and materials of components cylinder block, cylinder head, cylinder liner, piston, piston rings and wrist pin, connecting rod, crank-shaft, cam shaft, bearings, valves and valve actuating mechanism, fly wheel and dampers. Nomenclature of cylinder bore, piston area, stroke, dead centers (top and bottom), swept volume, clearance volume, compression ratio Concept of two stroke and four stroke petrol and diesel engines and their applications to automobiles. Carburation Concept of carburation, air fuel requirement under various conditions. Important circuits in carburetors starting, idling, low speed accelerating. Automobile fuel system: Various components of fuel system in petrol engine i.e. Fuel tank, filters Automobile cooling system: Air and water cooling system, radiator, fan, water pump Automobile lubrication system: Lubricants, necessity and desirable properties, oil additives MTE 6 Layout of an automobile chassis, introduction to their different systems such as frame, power plant, transmission (clutch and gear box), final drive, braking system, front axles, steering and suspension systems (just line diagrams and utility) Thermodynamic state and system, boundary, surrounding, universe, thermodynamic systems closed, open, isolated, adiabatic, homogeneous and heterogeneous, macroscopic and microscopic, properties of system intensive and extensive, thermodynamic equilibrium, quasi static process, reversible and irreversible processes, Zeroth law of thermodynamics, definition of properties like pressure, volume, temperature, enthalpy, internal energy. First and second law of thermodynamics (concept only), Types of thermodynamic processes isochoric, isobaric, isothermal, hyperbolic, isentropic, polytropic and throttling processes, equations representing the processes Otto cycle, diesel cycle and carnot cycle Nil
