THE LAKSA
Feeling ashamed for not knowing much
about Malaysia, Gio asked about his
country. Latif shared details about
Malaysian culture and cuisine, particularly
highlighting the diverse food scene in
Kuala Lumpur influenced by Chinese,
Indian, and Malay cuisines. This
interaction sparked their friendship, which
was further strengthened when Latif
introduced Gio to Malaysian food,
including the dish laksa.
7
AFTER MODEL UN
Their bond continued to grow as they
kept in touch through social media
platforms like Facebook and Instagram,
exchanging messages, congratulating
each other on their achievements, and
sharing cultural experiences. This
virtual connection eventually led to a
serendipitous reunion in Singapore,
where both had moved for work. Their
friendship, founded on shared interests
and cultural exchanges, exemplifies the
personal connections fostered by
globalization. 8

ARJUN APPADURAI'S PERSPECTIVE
He talks about different types of globalization happening on
different levels. He calls these levels "scapes.“
Examples of "scapes":
• Ethnoscape: Global movement of people.
• Mediascape: Flow of culture.
• Technoscape: Circulation of mechanical goods and software.
• Financescape: Global circulation of money.
• Ideoscape: Movement of political ideas.
• Each "scape" has its own logic and is a different way to understand
globalization.
• Appadurai's main point is that there are many types of
globalization, not just one.

• “The increased interconnectedness and interdependence
of people and countries:
• the opening of international borders to increasingly fast
flows of goods, services, finance, people and ideas; and
• the changes in institutions and policies at national and
international levels that facilitate or promote such flows.
• Globalization has the potential for both positive and
negative effects on development and health.”

28
IMPLICATIONS
- Different things can be globalized, and this changes how
globalization works.
- So, it Is important to ask not only "What is globalization?"
but also "What things are being globalized?"
- Depending on what's being globalized, our view of
globalization changes.

29
ONE OF THE MAIN REASON FOR GLOBALIZATION:
