SEA TURTLES

WHAT ARE SEA TURTLES?
Sea turtles, sometimes called marine
turtles, are reptiles of the order
Testudines and of the suborder
Cryptodira. The seven existing species of
sea turtles are the flatback, green,
hawksbill, leatherback, loggerhead,
Kemp's ridley, and olive ridley, six of
which live in Indonesia.
WHY WE SHOULD
CONSERVE SEA TURTLES
Sea turtles are a fundamental link in
marine ecosystems. They help
maintain the health of seagrass beds
and coral reefs that benefit
commercially valuable species such
as shrimp, lobster, and tuna. As of
now, nearly all species of sea turtle
are classified as endangered, with
three of the seven existing species
being critically endangered.
WHAT IS BEING DONE?
There are several organisations that
make an effort to conserve sea turtles.
For example : WWF works around the
world to establish marine protected
areas, ensuring sea turtles have a
safe place to nest, feed, and migrate
freely. They also help by increasing
public awareness, monitoring turtle
migration patterns, supporting the
control of illegal wildlife trade and
promoting and facilitating the
establishment of Marine Protected
Areas (MPA).
