GAUGE
24 sc + 24 rnds = about 4 in. (10 cm).

STITCH EXPLANATIONS
Puff (4-hdc puff – worked all in one st) Yarn over, insert hook in indicated st, yarn over and draw up a loop, (yarn
over, insert hook in same st, yarn over and draw up a loop) 3 times, yarn over, draw through all 9 loops on hook.
sc2tog (sc 2 sts together) (Insert hook in next st and draw up a loop) twice, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops
on hook – 1 st decreased.
TECHNIQUE EXPLANATION
Magic Ring: Wrap yarn around index finger. Insert hook into ring on finger, yarn over and draw up a loop.
Carefully slip ring from finger and work the sts of Rnd 1 into the ring.
NOTES
1. Elephant is worked in 7 separate pieces: Trunk, Head, 2 Ears, Ring Attachment, Collar, and Flower.
2. Trunk, Head, 2 Ears, and Flower are worked in continuous rnds (spiral). Do not join last st of rnds to first
st with a sl st. Do not turn at beg of rnds.
3. Ring Attachment and Collar are worked back and forth in rows.
SAFETY NOTE
This Teething Ring is meant to be used as decoration only! Do not allow a baby or child to handle or play
with the Ring. If you plan to hang the Ring on a wall, be certain to hang well out of the reach of little ones.
TRUNK
With A, beg at tip of trunk, make a magic ring.
Rnd 1: Work 6 sc in ring; do not join, work in continuous rnds (spiral).
Place marker in last st made to indicate end of rnd. Move marker up as each rnd is completed.
Gently but firmly, pull tail to tighten center of ring.
Rnd 2: Working in back loops only, (sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st) twice – you will have 8 sc in this rnd.
Rnds 3 and 4: Sc in each st around.
Rnd 5: (Sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st) twice – 10 sc.
Rnd 6: Sc in each st around.
Rnd 7: (Sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st) twice – 12 sc.
Rnd 8: (Sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st) 3 times – 15 sc.
Rnd 9: Sc in next 7 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 6 sts, 2 sc in next st – 17 sc.
Place a marker in the 5th and 14th st of Rnd 9.
Fasten off.
Stuff trunk lightly.
HEAD
With A, leaving a long beg tail for sewing Head to Ring Attachment, beg at base of Head, make a magic ring.
Rnd 1: Work 8 sc in ring; do not join, work in continuous rnds (spiral).
Place marker in last st made to indicate end of rnd. Move marker up as each rnd is completed.
Gently but firmly, pull tail to tighten center of ring.
Rnd 2: Work 2 sc in each st around – 16 sc.
Rnd 3: * Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around – 24 sc.
Rnd 4: * Sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around – 32 sc.
Rnd 5: * Sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around – 40 sc.
EARS (make 2)
With A, make a magic ring.
Rnd 1: Work 8 sc in ring; do not join, work in continuous rnds (spiral).
Place marker in last st made to indicate end of rnd. Move marker up as each rnd is completed.
Gently but firmly, pull tail to tighten center of ring.
Rnd 2: Work sc in each st around – 16 sc.
Rnd 3: * Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around – 24 sc.
Rnd 4: * Sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around – 32 sc.
Rnd 5: * Sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around – 40 sc.
Rnd 6: * Sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around – 48 sc.
Row 7: Hold edges of last rnd together, matching 24 sts along each of 2 edges; working through both
thicknesses, sc in next 24 sts.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing Ear to Head.

DECORATIVE TEETHING RING

COLLAR
With B, leaving a long beginning tail for tying Collar around Elephant’s neck, ch 18.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, * ch 1, skip next ch, sc in next ch; rep from * across – 9 sc and 8 ch-1 spaces.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, skip first sc, * Puff in next ch-1 space, sl st in next sc; rep from * across – 8 Puffs.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for tying Collar around Elephant’s neck.
FLOWER
With B, make a magic ring.
Rnd 1: (Ch 1, Puff in ring, sl st in ring) 5 times – 5 Puffs, 5 ch-1 spaces, and 5 sl sts.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing Flower to Head.
RING ATTACHMENT
With A, ch 10.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across – 9 sc.
Rows 2-15: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing Ring Attachment around wooden ring.
FINISHING
Using photograph as a guide and yarn tails still attached to pieces whenever possible, assemble Ring as
follows:
With A, sew Ears to Head between Rnds 6 and 19.
With black embroidery floss, embroider Eyes between Rnds 11 and 12.
With A, sew the long side of Ring Attachment around the wooden ring.
With A, sew bottom of Head to the center of Ring Attachment.
Tie Collar around Elephant’s neck.
With B, sew Flower to Head, at Rnd 17.
Weave in ends.
