Seth, an easy rule on Trap for TKO blocking is what we use:
We trap the FIRST defender ON or OUTSIDE OF the Playside Guard.
Since the Playside Guard down blocks on TKO, he's blocking down on the A-Gap Defender and most
traps aren't run that tightly. So if we're trapping the defender who is ON (or outside the Guard), that would
usually be the Playside Tackle who is blocking the defender in a TKO scheme. However, since we're
trapping that defender, our Playside Tackle is bypassing him for the 2nd Level. As a matter of fact, on
Trap every blocker outside of our Playside Guard is automatically heading to the 2nd Level. (And if
there's no defender in the A-Gap, then our Playside Guard is also headed to the 2nd Level.)
So Trap in TKO works like this:
Center: Down block.
PSG: Down block, or continue to 2nd Level if no defender in gap
PST: 2nd Level
PSTE: 2nd Level
PSWB: 2nd Level
Backside Guard: Pulls to make Trap Block
Backside Tackle: Pulls to lead though, or stays home
Backside Tight End: Pulls to lead through, or hinge blocks.
Our blocking in Trap is very simple. Essentially everyone on playside is angling for the 2nd Level. Our
Pulling Guard will Trap the first bad guy who passes through; if no one passes through (you never really
know in youth ball what they'll do), then the Trapping Guard just keeps going outward until he hits a
trappable defender. Any defenders who pass through, who are further away from the play don't matter,
because we're running inside of them and the closest defender has likely already been kicked into them.
