 As a speaking activity:

I like to play a game with my students I named (2 words = 2 minutes ).

In this game, every student picks one card and talk about the 2 (or 3) words written
on the card for 2 minutes nonstop. Every card has a kind of a motivational,
inspirational message and they are asked to express their opinion about it.

To help students generate ideas, you can write these questions on the board:

 What does it mean?

 Do you agree with it?
 Can you give examples (personal or general)?

Instructions:

 Cut the cards and place them face down.

 Ask every student to pick one. If you have a large class, put the students into pairs
and ask each pair to pick one card.

 If they are beginners, give them some time (5 minutes at least) to prepare & write
their thoughts in the space provided. If they are intermediate or advanced learners,
give them a couple of minutes to write down some quick notes. OR ask them to do it
on the fly (they will go crazy though haha)

 After preparation time is over, students take turns presenting their ideas and
opinions.
 As a writing activity:

For writing, you can do the following:

2

Instructions:

 Cut the cards and place them face down.

 Ask every student to pick one. Again, if you have a large class, put the students
into pairs and ask each pair to pick one card.
 If this is a writing activity for beginners, ask them to write 3 to 5 simple sentences
about the topic. Give them enough time to brainstorm & write.
If they are intermediate or advanced learners, let them write a short paragraph
about it. Also, give them enough time to brainstorm & write.
 When everyone’s done writing, you can check the papers and if you have time, let
a couple of them read their sentences or paragraphs out loud.

 As a super FUN speaking/ writing activity:

Write these question words on the board ( who, what, where, when, why, how).

Give every student (or pair or even group) a card. Ask them to write answers to these
question words on the subject of the card they get. For example, with the ( Be
Yourself ) card, they can think about: who can be themselves? What does it mean to
be yourself? Where can you be yourself? Why you should be yourself? How to be
yourself? Etc.

 As an assignment:

If you don’t have enough time to do the previous activities in class, you can assign it
as homework. Write these questions on the board:

 What does it mean?

 Do you agree with it?
 Can you give examples (personal or general)?

At home, students should write their answers & thoughts in regard to the card they
get. Then, on the next day (next class), they read their answers and if you assign it in
a writing class, then you can just collect the papers and check them for the students.
