1 SAMUEL 17
Long ago, in the land of Israel, there was a young
shepherd boy named David. David loved God very much
and trusted Him with all his heart. One day, David faced a
giant problem – quite literally! This is the story of David
and Goliath.
The Philistine Army:
The Israelites were at war with
the Philistines. The Philistine
army had a mighty warrior
named Goliath, who was a
giant! Goliath challenged the
Israelites to send one man to
fight him.

“And there went out a champion out of the

camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of
Gath, whose height was six cubits and a
span.” (1 Samuel 17:4)
Every day, Goliath
would shout to the
Israelites, making
them afraid.
“And the Philistine said, I defy
the armies of Israel this day;
give me a man, that we may
fight together.” (1 Samuel 17:10)
David Steps Forward:
David was the youngest of eight
brothers. His three oldest brothers
were in the Israelite army. David’s
father sent him to take food to his
brothers and check on them.

“And David said to Saul, Let no man's heart fail because

of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine.”
(1 Samuel 17:32)
David was not afraid because
he knew God was with him.
He told King Saul about his
experiences as a shepherd,
how he had fought lions and
bears to protect his sheep.
“The LORD that delivered me out of
the paw of the lion, and out of the
paw of the bear, he will deliver me
out of the hand of this Philistine.” (1
Samuel 17:37)
David and Goliath:
David refused to wear the
king’s armor because it was
too heavy. Instead, he took
his sling and chose five
smooth stones from a brook.
“And he took his staff in his hand, and
chose him five smooth stones out of the
brook, and put them in a shepherd's bag
which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling
was in his hand: and he drew near to the
Philistine.” (1 Samuel 17:40)
When Goliath saw David,
he laughed, thinking that a
small boy could not
possibly defeat him.
“And the Philistine said unto David,
Am I a dog, that thou comest to me
with staves? And the Philistine
cursed David by his gods.” (1
Samuel 17:43)
But David was confident. He said:

“Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear,

and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of
the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel,
whom thou hast defied.” (1 Samuel 17:45)
David took a stone, slung it, and
struck Goliath on the forehead. The
giant fell face down to the ground.
“And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and
came and drew nigh to meet David, that David hasted,
and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine. And
David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone,
and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead,
that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon
his face to the earth.” (1 Samuel 17:48-49)
David’s bravery and trust in God saved
the Israelites that day. Everyone
learned that no matter how big the
problem, with faith in God, even the
smallest person can overcome the
greatest challenges.

“So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with
a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there
was no sword in the hand of David.” (1 Samuel 17:50)
