RECAP

Take a look at the picture below. While looking at it, try to take a look
back on a personal problem you had before. How did you deal with your
personal conflict? If you can go back to the time when you had that personal
conflict, what are the things about it that you’d like to change or improve?

("How to Resolve a Conflict at Work." WikiHow. Last modified March 11, 2007.
https://www.wikihow.com/Resolve-a-Conflict-at-Work)

With the challenges that you have encountered, we can’t deny that
there are times when we think of changing the decisions we have made and
improve our life choices. Problems and challenges are a constant part of our
lives and we learn a lot in facing them. It matters how we face these
challenges and how we focus on achieving our goals positively.

LESSON

In this lesson, you’ll be demonstrating your understanding of dealing

with personal conflicts alongside essential literary concepts. To achieve that,
we will be reading a text about an unforgettable woman whose pursuit of
status has cost her more than what she could ever have imagined.

One of the elements that are always present in a story is called

conflict. Conflict is a struggle between opposing forces – two characters, a
character, and nature, or even an internal struggle in a story. To make it
simpler, conflict is the problem encountered by the characters in a story.

Just a glimpse, there are six types of conflict identified in the

literature:

a.Man versus man – wherein two characters have opposing desires

or interests in a story;

b. Man versus nature – wherein a character is tormented by

natural forces such as storms or animals;

c. Man versus self – wherein the character himself experiences

inner struggle within him;

d. Man versus society – wherein the main character challenges a

law, tradition or institution;

e. Man versus supernatural – wherein the character resists forces

that are not of this world; and

f. Man versus technology – wherein the character resists

technological forces

It is important to take note of the differences between these types of
conflicts because it is always present in a story.

Before reading the story for today, let us take a sneak peek on the
background of the story that we are going to read. The short story, The
Necklace, was written by one of the greatest French writers named Guy de
Maupassant. The story takes place in Paris in the second half of the 19th
century when the European societies were divided into the upper, middle,
and lower classes.

Now that you are already familiar with the words we had a while ago, let
us read altogether the short story ‘The Necklace’ by Guy de Maupassant. The
text will be segmented into parts and once in a while, we will answer
questions. Let’s start!

The Necklace
by Guy de Maupassant

Mathilde Loisel lives in a flat with her

husband, who works as a clerk for the
Minister of Education. Their lives are not
luxurious, but they are not poor, merely
simple. Mathilde, however, longs to be rich.
She envies her friend Jeanne who has a large
house and lots of jewelry.

Think about Madame Loisel’s dreams

and desires up to this point. What can
you infer about her values?
Madame Loisel dreams and desires of
becoming rich just like her friend named
Jeanne. Let us continue reading the story.

One day her husband brings home an
invitation to a ball. He thinks his wife will
be excited to attend such a fancy party, but
instead she is upset. She complains that she
has nothing suitable to wear to such an
extravagant occasion. Her kind husband
agrees to give her the four hundred francs
that he had been saving to buy a new rifle to

get herself a gown.

What do you think is Monsieur Loisel’s motivation for giving the money to his
wife?

Monsieur Loisel thought of bringing

an invitation to a party because he was
thinking that his wife would be happy to
attend a party like that even if they don’t
have much. Let’s continue reading the
story.

The week of the party, Mathilde

seems anxious again. When her husband
asks her why she frets that she has no
jewelry to wear with her dress. He suggests
that perhaps she could borrow something
from her friend Jeanne Forestier. Mathilde
goes to Jeanne's house and picks out a

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AuXiRChOCl0)

Why does Madam Loisel borrow a diamond necklace from Jeanne Forestier?

Madame Loisel borrows a diamond

necklace from her friend named Jeanne
because she doesn’t have any jewelry to
wear for the party and she probably wants to
show others that she is also capable of
wearing something expensive like the other
rich people. Let’s continue reading the story. (Mishra, Krishna. "The Necklace." YouTube. April 30, 2019.

She and her husband attend the gala and have a
fabulous time. She loves amazing parties and
dances all night. Finally, they head home in the
wee hours of the morning. When they arrive
home, Mathilde realizes that the necklace is
missing. They wonder if it fell off in the carriage
that they took home, but neither of them noticed
the number. Her husband goes out to search the
streets but returns empty-handed. To stall for time,
Mathilde writes to her friend that she broke the

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AuXiRChOCl0) clasp and is having it repaired. In the meantime,
they find another necklace that matches the missing one, but it costs thirty-six thousand
francs. Her husband, fortunately, inherited eighteen thousand francs from his father, but they
will need to borrow the rest of the money. Finally, they have enough to purchase the
replacement necklace and Mathilde gives it to Jeanne who doesn't even look at it.

Consider why the Loisels don’t tell Mathilde’s friend the truth.
What motivates them to go into such debt?

The couple didn’t tell Jeanne that

they have lost her diamond necklace
because they knew that it is expensive. They
were terrified to let Jeanne know the truth
that’s why they kept it as a secret. We’re
almost done! Let’ continue reading.
(Mishra, Krishna. "The Necklace." YouTube. April 30, 2019.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AuXiRChOCl0)

In the next ten years, Mathilde's life

changes dramatically. They move to a smaller
apartment where she has to cook and clean for
herself. She also does work on the side while her
husband works multiple jobs to pay back all the
money they borrowed. After the ten years, the
money is all paid back, but Mathilde has aged a
great deal.
One day she sees Jeanne Forestier on the
street. She decides to tell her the truth about the
necklace. Jeanne is stunned by Mathilde's rough
appearance. Mathilde explains that it is indirectly
because of Jeanne since she lost the necklace she
borrowed from her and had to pay for a
replacement. Shocked, Jeanne confesses that the
necklace Mathilde borrowed was a fake, made of
paste, worth no more than five hundred francs.
