ABSTRACT

The sharing economy model, represented by companies such as Uber,

Airbnb, and Couchsurfing, offers individuals the opportunity to monetize
underutilized assets by renting them out. Yet it has its own shortcomings as
well. These platforms have faced criticism due to reports of discrimination.
Airbnb, in particular, has been scrutinized for instances of discrimination
reported in New York. To address this problem, Airbnb has implemented anti-
discrimination policies, yet there are still reports of preferences shown by
guests and hosts during the booking and approval processes. Similarity breeds
connections, but in this case, this leads to unequal opportunities for people of
different ethnicities, age groups, or genders.
This research aims to assess the diversity and the preference of guests
booking accommodations through Airbnb. The study analyses the age, gender,
and ethnicity of guests making bookings on the platform to measure the
preferential attachment. Additionally, it compares the behaviour of
communities in the western and eastern parts of the world, using New York and
Tokyo as examples. The findings will reveal the preference of guests and the
diversity of communities in these regions. We then compared the preferential
behaviour of community in the western and the eastern part of the world, New
York and Tokyo in this case.
Our research indicates that there is a significant preference for certain
individuals within a specific age range, gender, and ethnicity when it comes to
travel to New York and Tokyo. This preference suggests that individuals who
do not belong to the preferred age range, gender, and ethnicity may have fewer
opportunities for success in the market.
