Substrate/General Requirements
• All painting shall be strictly carried out in accordance with Jotun’s recommendations.
• A program and sequencing has to be done by the construction team for painting of the
different areas to ensure that structures can be coated in a continuous operation with
paint from the same batch.
• The surface to be coated shall be in ready condition. All necessary repairs to the
substrate have to be completed well in advance of the painting to ensure repairs/filling
material have completely dried out/ cured.
• The substrate shall be fully cured before starting any painting works.
• The substrate should have enough strength to carryout painting works. The ideal
minimum compressive strength of the substrate is 15 N/mm2 for good paint adhesion
to the substrate.
• The substrate should be free from oil, grease and other chemical impurities.
• No coating/painting works shall be undertaken until trials have been completed and site
samples are approved.
• Areas/items that need protection adjacent to painting area shall be masked off.
• No coating shall be performed during sand storm / windy, rainy and similar climatic
conditions.
• It is better to avoid painting if it is likely to rain during or immediately after the painting.
If rain water falls on the painted surface before the curing of the paint film, there is
potential for issues like water marks, surfactant leaching etc.
• If it begins to rain while application is in progress, painting job has to be stopped
immediately and painted areas has to be protected from rain. Any area affected by
rain has to be repainted later.
• The substrate should be completely dry before painting. A dry substrate normally will
have a pH value of 10 or less.

Note:
• Substrates like spray plaster can be chalky and powdery if the right mixing and
application procedures for these materials are not followed, which can result in low
substrate strength. A substrate with low strength can cause adhesion problems to
paints and can cause failures eventually. Any such issues to be rectified before starting
the painting works.
• Application of a solvent based penetrating primer like Jotun Penetrating Sealer can
reduce the effects of a chalky substrate and improve the strength of the substrate
moderately.

Painting Tools/Equipment
• Wire brush, abrasive paper, carborandum stone etc.
• Blasting/Water jetting equipment if required for concrete
• Roller, brush, scraper/spatula/putty knife, spray equipment, paint tray, extension rod,
compressor etc.
• WFT gauge, moisture meter, temperature gauge, humidity meter, pH meter/paper

Personal Protective Equipment

All people involved in application, inspection and supervision should wear the required
PPE as mentioned below and as per the product SDS and local regulations.
❖ Protective Coveralls/high visibility jackets (as per site rules) Safety helmet,
Safety shoes, Gloves, Face mask, Gas mask (for solvented products) Full body safety
harness when working at heights
Full body safety harness when working at heights
• Avoid fume accumulation in the case of solvented products and products with low
flash point by allowing good ventilation. Take extra safety measures while applying
paint in confined spaces. Contact Jotun in such cases for specific advices.
• Make sure that all project and local safety rules are followed.
• Please observe the environmental and precautionary notices displayed on the
container. Also, refer the product safety data sheet for detailed information regarding
health and safety risks and precautions for the use of this product.
Quality Assurance
• Ensure a dry, clean and sound substrate.
• The substrate should have enough strength to carryout painting works. A scratch with
a metallic nail should not produce a deep impression on the substrate or a tape test on
the substrate should not cause deposition of substrate particles on the tape.
• Measure moisture content in the substrate using a moisture meter and ensure that it
is below 10 % before starting painting.
• Wet Film Thickness of the coating to be applied can be found out using this formula
WFT=DFT/Volume solids %.
• Use WFT gauge to control the wet film thickness, if the WFT to be applied is more
than 150 microns.
• If the WFT to be applied is less than 150 microns or if the product is highly viscous
with hard aggregates, control thickness by calculating the spreading rate for the
required thickness using the formula.
Spreading rate in sq.m/L = 10 x volume solids/DFT
• Ensure sufficient ventilation during and immediately after painting
• Avoid painting if the substrate temperature is less than 10 0C and if the substrate
temperature is not more 3°C than the dew point temperature.
• Avoid painting if the substrate temperature is above 45 0C.
• Avoid painting if the relative humidity in the vicinity is above 80%.
• On exterior areas, avoid painting if it is likely to rain during or immediately after the
painting.

Surface Preparation

Plastered surfaces/Concrete
• Ensure that the plastered surface/Concrete is cured for at least 21 days.

• If any contamination like oil, grease, chemicals etc. are found, remove it from the
substrate by employing proper degreasing methods like detergent wash followed by
fresh water wash.
• If fungus/algae presence is noticed, use fungicide/biocide wash followed by fresh
water wash for areas affected with fungus, algae or similar growths.
• Check the plaster/concrete for any cracks. If cracks are found on the plastered
surface/concrete, use appropriate cementitious/ acrylic/ epoxy filler compatible with
the selected paint system to fill the cracks before painting.
• Remove all loose and foreign particles including dust, cement particles, corroded
material, efflorescence etc. from well cured and dry substrate manually with rubbing
stone, scrapper, abrasive paper etc. If required, wash the efflorescence affected area
with a mild acid followed by fresh water wash.
• Employ water jetting/ mechanical grinding etc., if required, on concrete and other
hard substrates.
• Before starting painting, ensure that all the dust and loose particles are removed using
a slightly wet cloth or an air jet and ensure that the substrate is fully dry.
• Test the moisture content before the painting and ensure that it is below 10%.
• If the plaster surface is not strong enough or chalky, use a solvent based
binding/penetrating sealer/primer.

Spray Plaster/Pigmented Plaster/Other cement based renders

• Ensure that the substrate is cured as per the manufacturer’s instructions.
• If any contamination like oil, grease, chemicals etc. are found, remove it from the
substrate by employing a proper degreasing method like a detergent wash followed
by fresh water wash.
• If fungus/algae presence is noticed, use fungicide/biocide wash followed by fresh
water wash for areas affected with fungus, algae or similar growths.
• Check the strength of the substrate by employing a tape test or a nail test. Make a
scratch on the spray plaster/render with a metallic nail and this should not produce a
deep impression. A tape test on an X cut on the spray plaster/render should not carry
loose material on the tape. The ideal minimum compressive strength of the spray
plaster/render is 15 N/mm2 for good paint adhesion to the substrate. Usage of a
solvent based binding/penetrating sealer/primer shall improve dust binding and
strength of the spray plaster/render substrate moderately and hence application of
Jotun Penetrating Sealer is recommended before application of the system.
• Employ water jetting/ mechanical grinding etc., if required, on hard substrates.
• Check the substrate for any cracks. If cracks are found, use appropriate
cementitious/acrylic/epoxy filler compatible with the selected paint system to fill the
cracks before painting.
• Remove all loose and foreign particles including dust, cement particles, efflorescence
etc., if any, from well cured and dry substrate manually with rubbing stone, scrapper,
100-220 grits abrasive paper etc.
• Before starting painting, ensure that all the dust and loose particles are removed using
a slightly wet cloth and ensure that the substrate is fully dry.
• Test the moisture content before the painting and ensure that it is below 10%.

GRC (Glass Reinforced Concrete)

• Ensure that the GRC elements are cured as per the GRC manufacturer’s instructions.
• If any contamination like oil, grease, chemicals etc. are found, remove it from the
substrate by employing a proper degreasing method like a detergent wash followed
by fresh water wash
• If fungus/algae presence is noticed, use fungicide/biocide wash followed by fresh
water wash for areas affected with fungus, algae or similar growths.
• Check for any minor cracks on GRC surface. If cracks are found, use appropriate
cementitious/acrylic/epoxy filler compatible with the selected paint system to fill the
cracks before painting.
• Abrade the entire surface thoroughly using scraper, abrasive paper, stiff bristle brush
etc.
• Employ water jetting/ mechanical grinding etc., if required.
• Remove all the dust generated using a slightly wet cloth or air jet.
• Ensure that the surface is dry before starting paint application. Test the moisture
content before the painting and ensure that it is below 10%.

Mixing of the Paint

• All the paint products have to be mixed thoroughly before application.

• While opening the lid of the CAN, if any skin is found on top of the CAN, it has to be
removed prior to mixing.
• For low viscosity products, a wooden mixing rod can be used. For high viscous
products, a mechanical agitator need to be used.
• Mixing has to be continued for 2 to 3 minutes in order to achieve a homogeneous mix.
• Pouring the contents of the CAN into an empty drum a few times will also produce a
homogeneous mix

Application of the system

Primer coat
• Apply a coat of Jotashield Alkali Resistant Primer using a medium nap cotton roller, at
a spreading rate between 10.6 sq.m/L to 14.8 sq.m/L, ensuring good penetration of
the primer into the substrate and allow to dry for a period between 1 hour (40°C) and
3 hours (23°C). A dilution around 5 to 10 % with Fresh Water may be allowed for ease
of application and penetration.

• Spreading rate may vary depending on the roughness and porosity of the substrate,
type of roller/brush/spray equipment used and application practice of the painter.
• Refer TDS for drying time at other temperatures
• If any filling of pinholes/minor levelling is required, use an exterior grade filler like
Jotashield Filler, Jotun Block Filler, Texo Compound etc. After allowing the filler to dry
completely, abrade the filled area properly and make it to the same level as the rest
of the area before starting topcoat application.
• If a non-Jotashield family filler (other than Jotashield filler) is used, spot priming with
Jotashield Penetrating Primer on top of the filled area is recommended.

Jotashield Decor High Build
