THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKROUND

INTRODUCTION

Education is considered as one of the most important factors in achieving

success in life. It is a fundamental right of every individual and serves as a stepping

stone towards a better future. However, not all students are able to excel in their

academic performance. There has been an increase in the number of students with low

academic performance in recent years. This emerging trend has become a cause of

concern for educators, parents and policymakers .Low academic performance is

defined as the inability of students to meet the expected standards in their academic

performance. It is often measured through their grades, test scores and overall

academic achievement. This issue has been a topic of discussion among researchers

and educators as it affects not only the students but also the society as a whole. The

problem of low academic performance has been attributed to various factors such as

socioeconomic status, learning disabilities, lack of motivation, and ineffective

teaching methods. It has also been linked to the use of technology and social media,

which has become a significant part of the daily lives of students. In order to address

this issue, it is essential to understand the underlying causes and implications of low

academic performance. This study aims to delve deeper into this emerging trend and

provide insights on how it can be addressed.

According to Hamish Coates, Alexander C McCormick, (2014) Student

engagement has become a popular approach to assessing and improving

undergraduate education quality. It has been rapidly adopted in various national

PANGAL SUR HIGH SCHOOL
Pangal Sur, Echague, Isabela
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

contexts, forming an international network of researchers. These efforts focus on

critical aspects of educational practice, respecting national context. Although

multinational inquiry is in its infancy, lessons have emerged for educational

improvement efforts. Positive reinforcement has been used as a strategy to motivate

students and improve their academic performance.

According to James H Kuklinski et al. (2018) found that students who

received positive reinforcement had higher academic achievement and were more

motivated to learn. This highlights the potential of positive reinforcement in

improving academic outcomes for students. Tutoring programs have been

implemented in schools to provide additional support to struggling students.

According to Matthew C Boulay (2016) found that tutoring programs had a

significant positive effect on students’ academic performance. This highlights the

potential of these programs in improving academic outcomes for students with low

performance. Numerous studies have shown that parental involvement is crucial in a

child’s academic success.

A study by Epstein and Sanders (2017), found that students with involved

parents had higher grades, better attendance, and a more positive attitude towards

school. This highlights the importance of parents in their child’s education and the

need for schools to involve parents in their children’s academic activities.

Socioeconomic status (SES) has long been recognized as a significant factor in a

student’s academic success.

According to Reyes (2021) found that students from lowincome families had

lower academic achievement compared to their peers from higher-income families.

This highlights the need for schools to provide equal opportunities for all students,
PANGAL SUR HIGH SCHOOL
Pangal Sur, Echague, Isabela
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

regardless of their socioeconomic background. Each student has a unique way of

learning, and understanding their learning style can significantly impact their

academic performance. Peer pressure is a significant concern for students, especially

during adolescence.

A study by Sotelo (2021), peer pressure had a negative impact on students'

academic performance. Students who succumbed to peer pressure were more likely to

engage in risky behaviors and neglect their studies. This highlights the need for

schools to address peer pressure and provide support to students in making positive

choices.
