Welcome to Community Health Nursing Science 1

MODULE DESCRIPTION

This module aims to equip student nurses with adequate knowledge, appropriate skills, and positive attitudes to provide comprehensive
community health care based on primary health care principles and approaches to individuals, families, and communities.

EXIT LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

• Apply the primary health care (PHC) principles and approaches in all health care settings, taking into consideration the elements
of PHC.
• Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of an appropriate community entry process to a given community, identifying
the community needs/problems, analyzing and prioritizing these, with the involvement of the community.
• Assist individuals, families, and communities in promoting a healthy living environment, pollution, and care of milk.
• Provide appropriate information to the caregiver/guardian and others on feeding a child under five years, and with reference to
the growth pattern of the child.
• Acquire knowledge on the overall health status of mother and child with the involvement of the mother, family, and community,
using the GOBI-FFF principles, as well as give attention to the Family Planning needs.

• Acquire adequate knowledge and appropriate skills to manage common trouble behaviors, conditions, or problems affecting
children under 5 years of age accordingly.
• Manage disabling health problems and the prevention of communicable diseases of the under-fives, including TB, HIV and
AIDS infections by demonstrating health education skills and by using the IMNCI strategy.
• Provide appropriate information to individuals, families, and communities to combat sexually transmitted diseases (STI) and
their consequences, including HIV and AIDS.

1. ASSESSMENTS

1.1 Continuous Assessment marks (CA)/Formative Assessment

Four (4) assessments (test/assignment) per year, two (2) per semester.

The average of all assessments written during the year will be calculated to serve as a year mark.

A student is expected to obtain at least 40% minimum CA to be admitted to the examination.

1.2 Examination/ Summative Assessment

The examination consists of one (1) paper out of 100 marks to be written for three (3) hours. A student is expected to obtain at least
40% to pass the examination.

The final mark will be calculated as follows: the average CA mark and examination mark ÷ 2 = 50% to pass the module.
