Gagaku - Court Music Of Japan

Percussion Instruments (Membranophone)

Odaiko (big drum) - Physical energy and sheer excitement (festival)

Tsuzumi (hourglass-shape) - There are two varieties, the smaller kotsuzumi and the larger
otsuzumi.

The kotsozumi is held on the right shoulder and the player alters the tone by squeezing
the laces.
The outsuzumi is placed on the left thigh.

Tsuridaiko - large hanging barrel drum

Taiko - a Japanese drum that comes in various sizes and is used to play a variety of musical
genres. It is the central instrument of percussion ensembles.2

String Instruments (Chordophone)

Koto - a 13-string zither, two meters long and made of Paulownia wood.

Shamisen - a plucked string instrument. Model similar to that of a guitar or a banjo. 3 Strings

Biwa - Japanese short-necked fretted lute. Used in story telling.

Wind Instruments (Aerophone)

Shakuhachi - Most famous flute made of bamboo. (Imported from China for gagaku)

Nokan - A parallel, bamboo flute (fue), is the only melodic instrument used in noh (theater).

Hichiriki - A double reed Japanese flute (fue)


Sho - A Japanese free reed musical musical instrument that was introduced from China
during the Nara period.

Shinobue - Also called takebue in the context of Japanese traditional arts. It is a Japanese
transverse flute or fue that has a high-pitched sound.

Ryuteki - Known as "Dragon Flute" , A Japanese tranverse fue made of bamboo. It is used in
gagaku.

CHINA
Culture was influenced by Confucius

Yueqin - a moon-shaped lute with shorter neck and four strings, playerd with a spectrum,
used for accompanying local operas.

Pipa - a four stringed lute with 30 frets and a pear-shaped body. This instrument has an
extremely wide dynamic range and remarkable expressive power.

Erhu - a two-stringed fiddle and one of the most popular Chinese instruments. It is used as a
solo instrument as well as in small ensembles or large orchestra, and by various ethnic
groups.

Sheng - Chinese mouth organ (12 - 36 bamboo pipes). One of the oldest Chinese Instrument

Dizi - is the traditional Chinese flute. It can have a membrane over an extra hole to give the
characteristic rattle effect.

Zheng - an ancient Chinese instrument that has an arched surface and an elongated-
trapezoid with 13 to 21 strings stretched over individual bridges. (3 - 4 Octave Range)

Pengling - Two small bells made of high-tine bronze. Produces effect of peaceful dreams

Yunluo - "Cloud Gongs" or "Cloud of Gongs," A set of ten small tuned gongs mounted in a
wooden frame. Gongs are generally of equal diameter but different thickness. Thicker =
Higher Pitched Sound. (10 gongs)

Types Of Music

Chong-ak - means "right music." Upper-class music.

Sog-Ak (Minsogak) - Music for lower class

Pansori - Music presented by skilled vocal singers and drummers

String Instruments (Chordophone)

Kayagum (gayageum) - traditional Korean zither like string instrument with 12 strings. Best
known traditional Korean Instrument

Geomungo - this 6-string plucked zither Korean musical instrument. Also known as "Black
Crange Zither."

Haegum - 2 String vertical fiddle that's played with a bow

Wind Instruments (Aerophone)

Piri - used in both folk and classical (court) music of Korea. Made of bamboo. Large reed and
cylindrical bore gives it a sound mellower than that of many other types of oboe.

Percussion Instruments (Membranophone)

Changgo - Most widely used drum in the traditional music of Korea. The two heads produce
sounds of different pitch and timbre, which when played together are believe to represent
the harmony of man and woman

Vocal Music of Japan


The main tone of Japanese music has 2 modes: the yo-sen and the in-sen. Both
consist of 5 primary tones based on a scale with 7 tones.

Yo-sen is used specifically in folk songs and early popular songs and is contrasted
with the in scale which does contain minor notes. In-sen is described as 'dark' while
yo-sen is described as 'bright' sounding.

The melody of Japanese Music often shifts on both modes

A pentatonic scale is a musical scale with five notes per octave

A diatonic scale is any heptatonic scale that includes five whole steps and two half
steps in each octave, in which the two half steps are separated from each other by
either two or three whole steps, depending on their position in the scale.
