Baroque Period
Introductory Message

For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the Music 9 Self-Learning Module on Famous Composers of the


Baroque Period.

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and


reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You

1. Johann Sebastian Bach


Born: Germany March 21, 1685
Died: July 28, 1750
J.S.Bach came from a family of musicians. He was taught to play
violin by his father who was then the town musician in Eisanach.
He entered school at age 7 where he was taught religion and
other subjects. He became orphaned at age ten. His brother, a
church organist provided for him. Bach’s beautiful soprano

in his sacred music. He was known for his compositions for organ, orchestra, and oratorio. His
most important and long term position was as cantor” at St. Thomas Church.

2. Antonio Vivaldi
Born: Venice, March 4, 1678 to
Died: Vienna, July 28, 1741
Antonio Lucio Vivaldi Antonio Lucio Vivaldi, nicknamed il
Prete Rosso ("The Red Priest") because of his red hair, was an
Italian Baroque composer, Catholic priest and a virtuoso
violinist. Recognized as one of the greatest Baroque composers,
his influence during his lifetime was widespread over Europe.
Vivaldi is known mainly for composing instrume nta l
concertos, especially for the violin, as well as sacred choral

composition is a series of four violin concerti depicting
each of the seasons, Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter.

3. George Friedrich Handel


Germany, February 23, 1685 to
London, April 14, 1759

George Handel was the second son from the second marriage of
a pastor. Despite his father’s opposition, George secretly taught
himself to play the harpsichord. At age 7, he gained access to a

Handel is remembered for his operas and oratorios. Handel became England’s favorite
composer. He had given English audiences music that in variety and interest rivalled anything
they could remember. Handel lost both of his eyesight in 1753. When he conducted his oratorio,
―Samson,” a few in the audience were unaware that he had lost his eyesight. The Messiah is
Handel’s most famous creation and the very well known ―Hallelujah‖ chorus is part of
Handel’s Messiah.The Messiah was written in the space of twenty – four days in London but
it was in Dublin when The Messiah was first performed and became an instant success.

Performance Task 1: Piano Solo- White Tiles 4
Directions:
1. For this performance task make sure to download on your play store or app store the
Piano Solo- White tiles 4. It is for free and you can also use this app without
requiring the internet connection or data. The picture below shows the icon of the
application.

2. Following the table below. You are going to play every level to unlock the music

the final score simply add the scores on each assigned game then get the average.

Performance Task 2: Move to the music
Directions:
1. For this performance task make sure to download on your play store or app store the Tiktok
application. Just in case you don’t have internet connection to download the app you can just
record the video on your smart phones and send it to Facebook messenger.

2. You will be given selections of music from Medieval period, Renaissance period and
Baroque period. Just choose one music on any of the three periods. You can use any of the
following music:
 Gregorian chant of Medieval Period
 Fire Fire my Heart by Thomas Morley
 Tocatta and Fugue in d minor by JS Bach
 Concerto Grosso for Two violins, Cello, Strings, and Basso Continuo by Handel
 Pope Marcellus Mass by Palestrina
 Hallelujah chorus by Handel
 Four Seasons Spring by Antonio Vivaldi

3. Create your own interpretation of your chosen music in the form of dance. You can also ask
your family members to join you on the video. The more the merrier.
4. You may choose the theme of your music interpretation on the list below:
