Control of Guns
Most criminals are killed or wounded on a daily basis, but citizens than it happens with the police. The
root of gun ownership is protection for self, loved ones, and family. It is a concept that has been
cherished for a long from the English common law, where a community or a kingdom was left under an
armed populace. When it comes to gun ownership, the public is divided as some support the idea while
others strongly oppose the possibilities.
The right to win a gun in America is distinctive to the political and social life of a person.
The Second Amendment states that well-regulated gun ownership is important for the security
of a free state, and thus, the right for people to keep and bear firearms should not be infringed.
Everyone is equal after birth and should be accorded equal natural rights, meaning that there
are laws that are granted by God and should not be taken away.
Many politicians and political observers with an interest in gun control rights argue that the 2 nd
amendment to the American Constitution gives citizens the right to self-defense in a life-threatening
situation. Several instances have been mentioned that may necessitate self-defense. Weapons also have
a special connection with American culture because they mark the resistance to oppression by the
British monarchy.
Those in support of gun ownership claim that it is a tradition in the American culture. According to a poll
in 2015, 41% of Americans had guns in their homes. 82% of Americans support gun ownership. The
reason for the strong support is that Americans claim that the culture has existed for many years and
should not be banned. The second argument is that guns protect citizens from tyranny. The United
States is suspicious of the federal government. The nation was born in the 1970s after the freeing of 13
colonies that were seen as unjust and oppressive. The claim is that owning guns will protect citizens
from such experiences as the government does not have the right to deny people the right to own a
gun. Additionally, it is easy for an armed citizen to prevent oppression from external powers in case the
incidences of colonial times repeat themselves.
The issue of gun control is significant after many shootings in schools and malls.
During President Obama’s reign, he tried to pass some form of gun control laws that Congress
opposed.
Hillary Clinton also made gun control a part of his campaign.
Those who support gun ownership claim that it is a right under the United States Constitution through
the Second Amendment. According to the amendment, citizens have a right to keep and bear firearms,
and the right should not be infringed upon. An additional reason why gun ownership is supported is
because of the claims that it makes society a safer place. Supporters of gun ownership believe that the
only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is to have a good guy with a gun. For instance, if a security guard
in a school is allowed to own a gun, the school would be a safer place for all students.
There is an increase in Murder cases and mass shootings in the United States.
The Second Amendment is interpreted wrongly
Gun rights can be described as anachronistic rights
According to those who oppose gun ownership, the cases of gun ownership continue to go up. The cases
are horrifying because they involve even young children who are killed during the mass shootings. While
the availability of guns may not be the only factor, easier access can explain the rate of increase in
murder cases. The second factor as to why gun ownership should not be allowed is because the citizen
misinterprets the Second Amendment. The Constitution does not guarantee the right to own a gun, and
thus can be restricted. The Second Amendment only permits ownership of weapons as a part of a well-
regulated militia.
Additionally, during the founding of America, there was no police force, and it was under threat of
invasion by the British community. Permitting guns during the time made sense. Presently, there is a
police force who are meant to protect the general public; thus, permitting guns is not right. Therefore,
gun ownership is not a right that should be granted as it puts the lives of more citizens in danger.
Theoretical Framework
The ethical theory that is most suitable for gun ownership is utilitarianism.
The theory states that we should perform actions that can lead to better overall performance
for everyone.
The theory advocates for an action that leads to happiness and opposing actions that can lead to
harm.
According to the theory, allowing the general public to own guns would lead to harm to society. As seen
from the research, there has been an increase in mass shootings and murder cases due to access to
guns. The best solution in this case would be to restrict gun control so as to protect society from more
harm. Having restrictions on gun ownership would ensure that only those who are licensed TO own a
gun can access it and only under clear circumstances. Generally, guns are not good according to the
practical view because they harm and kill people.
Personal View
Personal Perspective
I believe that allowing people to own guns and not putting control on gun ownership puts the lives of
many people in danger. Allowing people to keep guns at home would increase the number of murder
cases at home as people would kill each other for small mistakes at the end of an argument.
Additionally, giving access to guns makes it easy for robbers and thieves as they can easily access other
people ‘s homes and businesses by threatening someone using a gun. Although cases of robberies still
exist, giving them access will only worsen the situation. The government should, therefore, pass laws
abolishing gun ownership and only allow licenses in rare cases.
In summary, gun ownership is one of the controversial topics that leads to a lot of questions.
Those in support of gun ownership claim that gun ownership is a tradition in the United States, a
form of protection from tyranny, a constitutional right, and also makes society a safe place.
Those against gun ownership claim that there is an increase in Murder cases and mass shootings
in the United States, and the Second Amendment is interpreted wrongly. The gun control issue
relates to utilitarianism, which advocates for what is good for society.
