6
RECAP
We have learned in the previous lesson how to claim explicit statements. As
speaker of the language, we should be clear, concise, and understandable when we
express opinions and facts.

LESSON

A generalization is a statement that applies to a group of people or things,

based on some examples. Someone looks at the evidence or examples and comes up
with a conclusion about what they mean. For example, someone who likes to read
and has some friends who like to read might reach the conclusion that ''Everyone
who likes to read is smart.''
Some generalizations are valid, or true; other generalizations are faulty, or not
true. When generalizations are based on many examples, they're more likely to be
valid than if they're based on just a few examples.
''All birds lay eggs,'' this statement is a generalization. It states a fact that is
supposed to be true about every member of the group. It says that all birds (the
group) lay eggs (the fact that is supposed to be true). In this case, it is correct. All
birds do lay eggs. It didn't give any examples in the story, but you could come up
with hundreds of examples that would show that this generalization is valid.

A generalization is a conclusion drawn from several examples or pieces of

evidence.

She’s a six- month old cocker spaniel puppy, a breed originally intended
to hunt birds in England. Her faithful companionship comforts me when I’m
sad or sick. Her playfulness makes me laugh when she races after a toy I’ve
