Model writing
Essay

1.
There have been some major shifts in working patterns in the last few years. Workers in a range of sectors have
had to nd ways to complete their duties online from home. Opinions about this practice have varied considerably,
with some employees embracing this change. Others have struggled to adapt.
2.
One of the factors that has contributed to a positive attitude toward working from home is the opportunity to
abandon costly and time-consuming journeys to work. For those workers who used to commute considerable
distances by car or train, the nancial savings are substantial. Furthermore, everyone is bene tting from the
savings in time, whether their journeys to work were long or short.
3.
Working from home has also given rise to an increase in exibility and focus. Because the working day is less
structured, employees are able to adapt their schedule to make time for household activities such as laundry or
dog-walking. Many workers also nd that they are able to concentrate better on tasks without the distractions of
o ce life, although most miss their colleagues.
4.
In parallel with these advantages comes one main disadvantage: a decline in the quality of free time. It used to be
easier for people to leave their work behind them when they left the o ce. However, with constant availability
just a click away, work can intrude on people’s personal time in the evenings and on weekends, causing fatigue
and burnout.
5.
In conclusion, for better or worse, the survival of homeworking is not in question. What remains to be seen is
whether workers will be able to avoid the negative consequences of this practice.

a) Which option best describes the writer’s position on homeworking?

2. Nowadays, more and more people are working from home. Do you think this is a positive
or negative development?
3. Workers are more productive when they have the option to work from home. To what
extent do you agree? How can employers boost productivity in the o ce?
