Dedication

This humble research is dedicated to;

My dear father, who raised me since I was young, instilled in me a love of

religion in general, and a love of Islamic knowledge in particular, and
helped me financially and morally, may Allah bless him, I asked that the
love between us be perpetuated, that his life be prolonged, and that he be
blessed in it. I also ask Allah for mercy and a good ending for him, saying:
And say, “My Lord, have mercy on them as they raised me when I was
little.” 1
The loving mother, whom I love sincerely, the first teacher, and the
successful educator, who spent dearly and cheaply in raising me and
advancing my academic life.
Everyone who taught me a letter or helped in my upbringing and
education.
Everyone I love for the sake of Allah Almighty, especially my dear
siblings; Aisha, Ahmad, Safiyyah, Tasneem, Maryam, Amina, Mubaraka,
Fatima, Aliyu, Khadijah and Salma. To all of you, I dedicate this humble
research, and I ask Allah to perpetuate the love between us and forgive
our known and unknown transgressions.

Acknowledgment

I
n the pursuit of writing this humble book, "Encouragement on Seeking
Allah’s Forgiveness," I am indebted to the unwavering support and
divine guidance of Allah, the Most Merciful. With profound gratitude,
I extend my heartfelt appreciation to my parents and revered sheikhs,
whose wisdom and counsel have lightened my path throughout this
journey. Despite the challenges posed by limited resources, their
cherished guidance inspired me to persevere and present this book as a
guide to seeking Allah's forgiveness. It is with great humility that I offer
this creation as a testament to His boundless compassion and grace. I
beseech Allah, the Most High, the Most Merciful to accept this offering, to
pardon my past and future transgressions, and to let it serve as a source
of benefit for both the readers and myself. My sole aspiration is to attain
His boundless mercy and forgiveness. May His blessings and mercy
forever envelop us, for He is indeed the Forgiving, the Forgiver and the
Most Merciful. May this book, born from the depths of my heart, be a
source of solace and spiritual growth for all who encounter its words.

Translator’s Note

W
ith utmost gratitude in my heart, I offer my thanks to Allah The
Most High for His steadfast support during the journey of
translating this book into English. Through His boundless
blessings, the Arabic version now rests in its completion, a testament to
His grace.
My earnest intention remains to continue this work, bringing it to life in
English and Hausa, like a tender promise made to the soul. This humble
book has been lovingly composed, a gentle guide, intended to cradle my
dear brothers and sisters, guiding them to embrace the teachings of our
beloved Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, and to seek forgiveness
in the gentle rhythm of our daily lives.
The decision to translate it into English is a whisper of hope, intended to
extend the warmth of its message to countless Muslim hearts. To ensure
every verse from the Quran resonates with clarity and grace, I've woven
the tapestry of the English Sahih International translation into its pages.
Beyond beseeching forgiveness for our inevitable human frailties, I offer
a tender prayer to the Most Merciful, asking that He bestows His blessings
upon this endeavor and accepts it as an offering of love, scripted solely to
seek His divine pleasure. Amin.

Introduction

I
n the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful All praises
are due to Allah; we praise Him; we seek His help; we seek His
forgiveness; and we seek His guidance. We seek refuge in Allah from
the evil in our souls and the badness of our deeds. For whomever Allah
guides, there is none to lead him astray. And for whomever He allows to
go astray, there is none to guide him. I bear witness that none is worthy of
worship except Allah, for whom there is no partner. And I bear witness
that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.
Allah Almighty says in His Book: {135} And those who, when they
commit an immorality or wrong themselves {by transgression}, remember
Allah and seek forgiveness for their sins – and who can forgive sins except
Allah? – and {who} do not persist in what they have done while they know.
1
{136}. Those – their reward is forgiveness from their Lord and gardens
beneath which rivers flow {in Paradise}, wherein they will abide
eternally; and excellent is the reward of the {righteous} workers 2
It was mentioned in the Holy Hadith: On the authority of the
Prophet, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, in what was
narrated on the authority of Allah, The Blessed and The Most High, that
He said: O My servants, you sin by night and by day, and I forgive all sins,
so seek forgiveness of Me and I shall forgive you. 3
And Allah Almighty said, O son of Adam, if you call upon Me and
place your hope in Me, I will forgive you despite what is within you and I
will not hesitate. O son of Adam, if you have sins piling up to the clouds
and then ask for My forgiveness, I will forgive you without hesitation. O
son of Adam, if you come to Me with enough sins to fill the earth and then

you meet Me without associating anything with Me, I will come to you
with enough forgiveness to fill the earth.” 1
There is no doubt that, in His Great Book and on the words of His
Messenger, Allah declared Himself, named Himself and described
Himself as the Forgiving, the Forgiver of Sins, and the Possessor of
Forgiveness. As Allah Almighty said: And indeed, your Lord is full of
forgiveness for people for their wrongdoing. 2 Likewise, in a hadith
narrated on the authority of Abu Hurairah, who said: The Messenger of
Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: Our Lord, Blessed
and Most High, descends every night to the lowest heaven when a third of
the night remains. He will say, “Who calls upon Me, that I may answer
him? Who asks Me, that I may give him? Who asks Me for forgiveness,
that I may forgive him?”
Likewise, the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant
him peace, said: By Him in Whose Hand is my life, if you were not to
commit sin, Allah would sweep you out of existence and He would replace
{you by} those people who would commit sin and seek forgiveness from
Allah, and He would have pardoned them. 3
In this collection, I compiled some selected verses and hadiths
{Traditions of the prophet} that talk about Allah’s forgiveness and mercy
toward His creation in general. Just as his Prophet said in an authentic
hadith: On the authority of Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him,
he said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon
him, said: "When Allah created the Creation, He wrote in His Book--and
He wrote {that} about Himself, and it is placed with Him on the Throne--
'Verily My Mercy overcomes My Anger.' 4

Allah The Almighty has promised that He will forgive us if we ask

for His forgiveness, because Allah has mercy on His creation and
forgiveness for them. These verses and hadiths indicate that Allah created
us not to commit sin, to forget, or to disobey, but it happens we ask Him
for forgiveness and repent to Him, so He forgives us and accept our
repentance, just as Allah Almighty said: Allah does not charge a soul
except {with that within} its capacity. It will have {the consequence of}
what {good} it has gained, and it will bear {the consequence of} what
{evil} it has earned. "Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have
forgotten or erred. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which
You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that
which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have
mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the
disbelieving people." 1 And also his Prophet, may Allah bless him and
grant him peace, said in a hadith: “All of the children of Adam are sinners,
and the best sinners are those who repent.” 2 To prove this, it came in a
hadith on the authority of Abu Hurairah who said: I heard the Messenger
of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, saying: By Allah! I
ask for forgiveness from Allah and turn to Him in repentance more than
seventy times a day. 3
With this, I urge myself and my dear brothers and sisters to adhere
to the Sunnah of our beloved Prophet, may Allah’s prayers and peace be
upon him, his family, and his companions, in seeking Allah’s forgiveness
always.

Benefits of Seeking Allah’s Forgiveness

Sheikh Muhammad Saleh Al-Munajjid said in a Friday sermon;

W
hen Sheikh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah - may Allah have mercy
on him - was asked: “Which is more beneficial for the servant:
praising Allah or seeking Allah’s forgiveness?” He said: “If
the clothes are clean, then perfume is more beneficial for him, and if the
clothes are dirty, then soap is more beneficial for him.” If the clothes are
dirty and if there are sins, then seeking forgiveness here is prior, and
combining the two is better and it is the Sunnah, O servants of Allah. The
servant is between a sin and a blessing, and nothing is right except praise
and seeking forgiveness. He praises his Lord for the blessing, and seeks
forgiveness from his Lord for the sin. Asking forgiveness is obedience to
Allah. Asking forgiveness is the reason for the forgiveness of sins. So I
said, “Ask forgiveness of your Lord. Indeed, He is ever Forgiving.” {Surah
Nuh: 10}, Asking forgiveness is the reason for the rain to fall: He will send
[rain from] the sky upon you in [continuing] showers. {Surah Nuh: 11}, Asking
forgiveness is a source of wealth and children.: And He will provide you
with wealth and children {Surah Nuh: 12}, Ask forgiveness of your Lord.
Indeed, He is ever Forgiving {Surah Nuh: 10}. This is the first benefit of seeking
forgiveness. He forgives sins, two: the rain descending: He will send [rain
from] the sky upon you in [continuing] showers. {Surat Nuh: 11}, three:
Prosperity with money and He will provide you with wealth {Surat Nuh: 12},
four: Males are among the children that souls desire. He wants a male, and
that is why he said: And children {Surat Nuh: 12}, and he did not say and
children; Because children include boys and girls, and souls long for boys.
16

He said: And He will provide you with wealth and children {Surat Nuh: 12},
five: entering Paradise.: And He will make for you gardens {Surat Nuh: 12},
six, as in the other verse: And He will increase you in strength to your
strength {Surat Hud: 52}, physical strength, strength of arms. Power of all
kinds, seven: Good bequests: He will provide you with good provision
{Surat Hud: 3}, eight to ward off calamity and torment: And Allah would not
punish them while they ask forgiveness {Surat Al-Anfal: 33}. These are reasons
that motivate one to be keen on this act of worship.
Ibn Abbas reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings
be upon him, said, “Whoever increases his prayers for forgiveness, Allah
will grant him relief from every worry, a way out from every hardship,
and provide for him in ways he does not expect.”1
Sheikh Sidi Abu Madin Al-Ghawth said:
I ask Allah for forgiveness for my speech and my manners ... And for
disgracing my affairs and my appearance and for my slander
I ask Allah for forgiveness for my secrecy and for my openness ... And
for the turning of my heart and for the smile of my mouth
I ask Allah for forgiveness for my hearing and my sight ... And for my
conscience and for Think and speak. 2
And what the speaker said:
I ask forgiveness from Allah from those who ask forgiveness from Allah … from
a word whose meaning has changed.
How can I hope for answers to my prayers when I have paid its course with
Allah’s sin?

SECTION ONE

Definition of Seeking Allah’s Forgiveness

A
sking forgiveness: Asking forgiveness and pardon from Allah
Almighty, verbally and effectively. It is taken from the word “al-
Mughafir” {the helmet} which covers and protects. Allah
Almighty said: And You will forgive Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and
Merciful. {An-Nisa: 109} The difference between it and repentance is that
seeking forgiveness comes from the sinner and from others, so Muslims
ask forgiveness for their brothers while they are alive, and dead, and the
angels ask forgiveness for the believers, in contrast to repentance, which
can only come from the sinner. Asking forgiveness for the past, repentance
in the present, and returning to Allah in the future. 1
Terminological meaning: The servant asks his Lord to pardon sins and
protect themselves from their effects.
Brief Explanation: Asking forgiveness: a great act of worship, whether it
occurs with the occurrence of sin or not, and it may come alone and is
synonymous with repentance, which is: abstaining from sin with the heart
and limbs, or it may come in conjunction with repentance, the meaning of
seeking forgiveness is: asking for protection from the evil of the past, and
repentance: returning and asking for protection. The worst thing he fears
in the future is his bad deeds. Asking forgiveness came in various forms,

such as saying: “Lord, forgive me,” and saying: “I ask forgiveness from
Allah,” and other forms.
Linguistic definition: Asking forgiveness: asking for forgiveness, and
forgiveness in the original: covering and concealing, and what is meant by
it is to go beyond the sin and not be held accountable for it. It is said: Allah
forgave his sins, i.e.: He covered it and moved away from it.
Brief linguistic definition: Istighfar: Asking for forgiveness, what is
meant by it is to overcome the sin and not be held accountable for it.
Term releases: The term {asking for forgiveness} appears in
jurisprudence in many places, including: The Book of Prayer, Chapter:
The Characteristics of Prayer, Chapter: Praying for the Dead, Chapter:
Asking for Rain, in the Book of Hajj, Chapter: The Characteristics of Hajj,
and in the Book of Judgments, Chapter: The Testimony of the Immoral
One. And others That's from the doors. It is mentioned in the science of
belief in many places in the chapter: The Oneness of Divinity.
Root word: Forgive 1

Allah will turn to them in forgiveness. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and

Ahadeeth that Insight Allah’s Mercy and

Forgiveness

A
bu Dharr reported Allah's Messenger {‫ }ﷺ‬as saying that Allah,
the Exalted and Glorious, said: "O My servants, I have forbidden
oppression for Myself and have made it forbidden amongst you,
so do not oppress one another. O My servants, all of you are astray except
for those I have guided, so seek guidance of Me and I shall guide you, O
My servants, all of you are hungry except for those I have fed, so seek
food of Me and I shall feed you. O My servants, all of you are naked except
for those I have clothed, so seek clothing of Me and I shall clothe you. O
My servants, you sin by night and by day, and I forgive all sins, so seek
forgiveness of Me and I shall forgive you. O My servants, you will not
attain harming Me so as to harm Me, and will not attain benefitting Me so
as to benefit Me. O My servants, were the first of you and the last of you,
the human of you and the jinn of you to be as pious as the most pious heart
of any one man of you, that would not increase My dominion in anything.
O My servants, were the first of you and the last of you, the human of you
and the jinn of you to be as wicked as the most wicked heart of any one
man of you, that would not decrease My dominion in anything. O My
servants, were the first of you and the last of you, the human of you and
the jinn of you to rise up in one place and make a request of Me, and were
I to give everyone what he requested, that would not decrease what I have,
any more that a needle decreases the sea if put into it. O My servants, it is
but your deeds that I record for you and then recompense you for. So let
31

him who finds good, praise Allah, and let him who finds other than that
blame no one but himself." 1
On the authority of Anas {may Allah be pleased with him}, who
said: I heard the Messenger of Allah {‫ }ﷺ‬say: Allah the Almighty said: O
son of Adam, so long as you call upon Me and ask of Me, I shall forgive
you for what you have done, and I shall not mind. O son of Adam, were
your sins to reach the clouds of the sky and were you then to ask
forgiveness of Me, I would forgive you. O son of Adam, were you to come
to Me with sins nearly as great as the earth and were you then to face Me,
ascribing no partner to Me, I would bring you forgiveness nearly as great
as it. It was related by at-Tirmidhi {also by Ahmad ibn Hanbal}. Its chain
of authorities is sound. 2
Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬said, "A man used to do
sinful deeds, and when death came to him, he said to his sons, 'After my
death, burn me and then crush me, and scatter the powder in the air, for by
Allah, if Allah has control over me, He will give me such a punishment as
He has never given to anyone else.' When he died, his sons did
accordingly. Allah ordered the earth saying, 'Collect what you hold of his
particles.' It did so, and behold! There he was (the man) standing. Allah
asked (him), 'What made you do what you did?' He replied, 'O my Lord! I
was afraid of You.' So Allah forgave him. " Another narrator said "The
man said, Fear of You, O Lord!" 3
Narrated Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri: The Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬said, "Amongst
the men of Bani Israel there was a man who had murdered ninety-nine
persons. Then he set out asking (whether his repentance could be accepted
or not). He came upon a monk and asked him if his repentance could be
accepted. The monk replied in the negative and so the man killed him. He
kept on asking till a man advised to go to such and such village. (So he

left for it) but death overtook him on the way. While dying, he turned his
chest towards that village (where he had hoped his repentance would be
accepted), and so the angels of mercy and the angels of punishment
quarrelled amongst themselves regarding him. Allah ordered the village
(towards which he was going) to come closer to him, and ordered the
village (whence he had come), to go far away, and then He ordered the
angels to measure the distances between his body and the two villages. So
he was found to be one span closer to the village (he was going to). So he
was forgiven." 1
Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger (‫ )ﷺ‬said, "Allah says,
'If My slave intends to do a bad deed then (O Angels) do not write it unless
he does it; if he does it, then write it as it is, but if he refrains from doing
it for My Sake, then write it as a good deed (in his account). (On the other
hand) if he intends to do a good deed, but does not do it, then write a good
deed (in his account), and if he does it, then write it for him (in his account)
as ten good deeds up to seven-hundred times.' " 2

Sayings of the Ulama on Seeking Allah’s

Forgiveness

A
l-Hasan al-Basri {may Allah have mercy on him} said: Ask for
forgiveness more, for you do not know when mercy will descend.
1

Imam Ibn Katheer {may Allah have mercy on him} said: Whoever
is characterized as seeking forgiveness, Allah will facilitate his
sustenance, make his affairs easy for him, and preserve his condition and
his strength. 2
Ibn Taymiyah {may Allah have mercy on him} said: Seeking
forgiveness from a person is more important than all supplications.3
 He also said: If a servant finds negligence in the right of kinship,
family, children, neighbours and brothers, he should pray for them
and seek forgiveness. 4
 He also said: "The worst kind of generosity is: your generosity in
giving your good deeds to others, backbiting, gossip, slander,
sparing, and cursing, and the most beautiful type of miserliness is:
to prevent yourself from wasting good deeds, for the happy person
asks forgiveness for faults, and is patient with calamities.5

 He also said: Seeking forgiveness is the greatest good deed, so whoever

feels that he is negligent in his words, deeds livelihoods,or fluctuations
in his heart, then he must seek forgiveness and monotheism. 1

Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy on him, said: The heart is rusted by
two things; heedlessness and guilt. And rust removal is two things; by
seeking forgiveness, and by remembrance.
So whoever is negligent most of the time, rust will accumulate on his heart,
and it will rust according to his negligence, and if the heart rusts, it will
not be damaged. It contains images of information as it is, so he sees
falsehood in the image of truth, and truth in the image of falsehood. 2
 He also said: Four things bring sustenance: praying the night
prayers, asking for forgiveness a lot at dawn, pledging charity, and
Remembrance at the beginning and end of the day. 3
 He also said: Whoever continues to glorify Allah, his secrets will
be released, whoever continues to praise, good deeds will continue
to come to him, and whoever continues to ask for forgiveness, the
bars will be opened for him. 4
Sheikh Abdul Razzaq Al-Badr, may Allah protect him, said: Seeking
Allah’s forgiveness is the removal of worries, the removal of sorrows, and
the facilitation of matters. Indeed, its goodness and blessings for those who
seek forgiveness in this world and the Hereafter are countless and
uncountable. 5

Chapter One

Obtaining Allah’s Forgiveness Through

Ablution and Prayer

N
arrated Uqbah ibn Amir: I heard the Messenger of
Allah {‫ }ﷺ‬say: Allah is pleased with a shepherd of
goats who calls to prayer at the peak of a mountain,
and offers prayer, Allah, the Exalted, says: Look at this
servant of Mine; he calls to prayer and offers it and he fears
Me. So I forgive him and admit him to paradise. 1
Narrated Abu Hurayrah: The imam is responsible
and the mu'adhdhin is trusted, O Allah, guide the imams and
forgive the mu'adhdhins. 2
Ma'dan b. Talha reported: I met Thauban, the freed
slave. of Allah's Messenger {‫}ﷺ‬, and asked him to tell me
about an act for which, if I do it, Allah will admit me to
Paradise, or I asked about the act which was loved most by
Allah. He gave no reply. I again asked and he gave no reply.

I asked him for the third time, and he said: I asked Allah's
Messenger {‫ }ﷺ‬about that and he said: Make frequent
prostrations before Allah, for you will not make one
prostration without raising you a degree because of it, and
removing a sin from you, because of it. Ma'dan said that then
lie met Abu al-Darda' and when he asked him, he received a
reply similar to that given by Thauban. 1
It was narrated from Kathir bin Murrah that Abu
Fatimah told him: “I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah! Tell me
of a deed that I can adhere to and act upon.’ He said: “You
should prostrate, for you will not prostrate to Allah but He
will raise you in status one degree thereby and erase from
you one sin.” 2
Narrated Humran: {the slave of 'Uthman} I saw
'Uthman bin 'Affan asking for a tumbler of water {and when
it was brought} he poured water over his hands and washed
them thrice and then put his right hand in the water container
and rinsed his mouth, washed his nose by putting water in it
and then blowing it out. then he washed his face and
forearms up to the elbows thrice, passed his wet hands over
his head and washed his feet up to the ankles thrice. Then he
said, "Allah's Messenger {‫ }ﷺ‬said 'If anyone performs
ablution like that of mine and offers a two-rak'at prayer
during which he does not think of anything else {not related
to the present prayer} then his past sins will be forgiven.' " 3

Narrated Humran: After performing the ablution

'Uthman said, "I am going to tell you a Hadith which I would
not have told you, had I not been compelled by a certain Holy
Verse {the sub narrator 'Urwa said: This verse is: "Verily,
those who conceal the clear signs and the guidance which we
have sent down...}" {2:159}. I heard the Prophet {‫ }ﷺ‬saying,
'If a man performs ablution perfectly and then offers the
compulsory congregational prayer, Allah will forgive his
sins committed between that {prayer} and the {next} prayer
till he offers it. 1
Narrated Salman Al-Farsi: Allah's Messenger {‫}ﷺ‬
said, "Anyone who takes a bath on Friday and cleans himself
as much as he can and puts oil {on his hair} or scents
himself; and then proceeds for the prayer and does not force
his way between two persons {assembled in the mosque for
the Friday prayer}, and prays as much as is written for him
and remains quiet when the Imam delivers the Khutba, all
his sins in between the present and the last Friday will be
forgiven." 2
Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger {‫ }ﷺ‬said,
"When the Imam, during the prayer, says, "Allah hears him
who praises Him', say: 'O Allah! Our Lord! All the praises
are for You, for if the saying of anyone of you coincides with
the saying of the angels, his past sins will be forgiven." 3

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger {‫ }ﷺ‬said,

"When the Imam says: 'Ghair-il-Maghdubi `alaihim Walad-
Dallin {i.e. not the path of those who earn Your Anger, nor
the path of those who went astray {1:7}}, then you must say,
'Ameen', for if one's utterance of 'Ameen' coincides with that
of the angels, then his past sins will be forgiven." 1
Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger {‫ }ﷺ‬said,
"When the Imam says, "Sami`a l-lahu liman hamidah," you
should say, "Allahumma Rabbana laka l-hamd." And if the
saying of any one of you coincides with that of the angels,
all his past sins will be forgiven." 2
Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger {‫ }ﷺ‬said,
"If any one of you says, "Amin" and the angels in the
heavens say "Amin" and the former coincides with the latter,
all his past sins will be forgiven." 3
Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet {‫ }ﷺ‬said, "When
the Imam says 'Amin', then you should all say 'Amin', for the
angels say 'Amin' at that time, and he whose 'Amin'
coincides with the 'Amin' of the angels, all his past sins will
be forgiven." 4
Humran, the freed slave of 'Uthman b. 'Affan,
reported on the authority of 'Uthman b. 'Affan that he heard
Allah's Messenger {‫ }ﷺ‬say: He who performed ablution for
prayer and performed it properly and then went {to observe}

obligatory prayer and offered it along with people or with

the congregation or in the mosque, Allah would pardon his
sins. 1
Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah {‫}ﷺ‬
said: Five prayers and from one Friday prayer to {the next}
Friday prayer is an expiation {of the sins committed in
between their intervals} if major sins are not committed. 2
Sa'd b. Abu Waqqas reported: The Messenger of
Allah {‫ }ﷺ‬said: If anyone says on hearing the Mu'adhdhin: I
testify that there is no Allah but Allah alone. Who has no
partner, and that Muhammad is His servant and His
Messenger, {and that} I am satisfied with Allah as my Lord,
with Muhammad as Messenger. and with Islam as din {code
of life}, his sins would be forgiven. In the narration
transmitted by Ibn Rumh the words are:" He who said on
hearing the Mu'adhdhin and verity I testify." ' Qutaiba has
not mentioned his words:" And I." 3
Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger {‫ }ﷺ‬as
saying: He who performed ablution well, then came to
Friday prayer, listened {to the sermon}, kept silence all {his
sins} between that time and the next Friday would be
forgiven with three days extra, and he who touched pebbles
caused an interruption. 4

saying: He who took a bath and then came for Jumu'a prayer
and then prayed what was fixed for him, then kept silence
till the Imam finished the sermon, and then prayed along
with him, his sins between that time and the next Friday
would be forgiven, and even of three days more. 1
Asma bin Al-Hakam Al-Fazari said: "I heard Ali
saying: 'Indeed I am a man who, when I heard a Hadith from
Allah's Messenger {S} then Allah causes me to benefit from
it as much as He wills for me to benefit from it. When a man
among his Companions narrated to me I ask him to swear an
oath to me about it, and when he swears an oath to me I trust
him. And Abu Bakr narrated to me - and Abu Bakr told the
truth - he said: "I heard Allah's Messenger {S} saying: 'There
is no man who commits a sin, then makes Wudu, then
performs Salat, then seeks forgiveness from Allah, except
that Allah forgives him.' Then he recited this Ayah: Those
who when they have committed Fahishah or wronged
themselves with evil, remember Allah. {3:135} until the end
of the Ayah." 2
Narrated Abdullah ibn Sunabihi: Abu Muhammad
fancies that witr prayer is essential. {Hearing this} Ubadah
ibn as-Samit said: Abu Muhammad was wrong. I bear
witness that I heard the Messenger of Allah {‫ }ﷺ‬say: Allah,
the Exalted, has made five prayers obligatory. If anyone
performs ablution for them well, offers them at their {right}

time, and observes perfectly their bowing and

submissiveness in them, it is the guarantee of Allah that He
will pardon him; if anyone does not do so, there is no
guarantee for him on the part of Allah; He may pardon him
if He wills, and punish him if He wills. 1
Narrated A person from the Ansar: Sa'id ibn al-
Musayyab said: An Ansari was breathing his last. He said: I
narrate to you a tradition, and I narrate it with the intention
of getting a reward from Allah. I heard the Messenger of
Allah {‫ }ﷺ‬say: If any one of you performs ablution and
performs it very well, and goes out for prayer, he does not
take his right step but Allah records a good work {or
blessing} for him, and he does not take his left step but Allah
remits one sin from him. Any one of you may reside near the
mosque or far from it; if he comes to the mosque and prays
in congregation, he will be forgiven {by Allah}. If he comes
to the mosque while the people had prayed in part, and the
prayer remained in part, and he prays in congregation the
part he joined, and completed the part he had missed, he will
enjoy similarly {i.e. he will be forgiven}. If he comes to the
mosque when the people had finished prayer, he will enjoy
the same. 2
It was narrated from Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas that the
Messenger of Allah {‫ }ﷺ‬said: "Whoever says, when he hears
the Mu'adhdhin: 'Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah wahdahu la
sharika lahu wa anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa Rasuluhu,

worthy of worship except Allah alone, with no partner or
associate, and that Muhammad is the His slave and
Messenger; I am content with Allah as my Lord, Islam as my
religion and Muhammad as my Messenger},' his sins will be
forgiven." 1
It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that: The
Messenger of Allah {‫ }ﷺ‬said: "When the Imam says: 'Sami
Allahu liman hamidah {Allah hears the one who praises
Him},' then say: 'Rabbana wa lakal-hamd,' {Our Lord, and
to You be the praise}.' Whoever says that and it coincides
with the angels saying it, his previous sins will be forgiven."
2

Mu‘adh b. Jabal said that he heard Allah’s messenger

say, “He who meets his Lord having associated nothing with
Him, observed the five times of prayer, and fasted during
Ramadan will be forgiven.” Mu'adh asked whether he should
not give them the good news, but was told to let them go on
doing {good} works. Ahmad transmitted it. 3
Zaid b Khalid al-Juhani reported Allah’s Messenger
as saying, “If anyone observes two prostrations without
being negligent in them, Allah will forgive him his previous
sins.” Ahmad transmitted it. 4

when he finishes the Morning Prayer till he prays the two
rak'at of the forenoon, saying nothing but what is good, his
sins will be forgiven him even if they are more than the foam
of the sea.” Abu Dawud transmitted it. 1
Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger as saying,
“If anyone says ‘Glory be to Allah’ after every prayer thirty-
three times, ‘Praise be to Allah’ thirty-three times, and
‘Allah is most great’ thirty-three times, ninety-nine times in
all, and says to complete a hundred, ‘There is no Allah but

of the sea.” Muslim transmitted it. 2

saying: Allah is pleased with a shepherd on the top of a rock
on a mountain who makes the call to prayer and prays. Allah
says, “Look at this servant of Mine who makes the call to

Chapter Two

Seeking Allah’s Forgiveness Through

Fasting and {Whoever Observed}
Ramadan Ibadat

N
arrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger {‫ }ﷺ‬said,
"Whoever observes fasts during the month of
Ramadan out of sincere faith, and hoping to attain
Allah's rewards, then all his past sins will be forgiven." 1
Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger {‫ }ﷺ‬said:
"Whoever establishes prayers during the nights of Ramadan
faithfully out of sincere faith and hoping to attain Allah's
rewards {not for showing off}, all his past sins will be
forgiven." 2
Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger {‫ }ﷺ‬said,
"Whoever establishes the prayers on the night of Qadr out of

sincere faith and hoping to attain Allah's rewards {not to

show off} then all his past sins will be forgiven." 1
Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet {‫ }ﷺ‬said,
"Whoever established prayers on the night of Qadr out of
sincere faith and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his
previous sins will be forgiven; and whoever fasts in the
month of Ramadan out of sincere faith, and hoping for a
reward from Allah, then all his previous sins will be
forgiven." 2
It was narrated from Abu Qatadah that the Messenger
of Allah {‫ }ﷺ‬said: “Fasting on the Day of ‘Arafah, I hope
from Allah, expiates for the sins of the year before and the
year after.” 3
Abu Qatada al-Ansari {Allah be pleased with him}
reported that the Messenger of Allah {‫ }ﷺ‬was asked about
his fasting. The Messenger of Allah {‫ }ﷺ‬felt annoyed.
Thereupon 'Umar {Allah be pleased with him} said: We are
pleased with Allah as the Lord, with Islam as our Code of
Life, with Muhammad as the Messenger and with our pledge
{to you for willing and cheerful submission} as a {sacred}
commitment. He was then asked about perpetual fasting,
whereupon he said: He neither fasted nor did he break it, or
he did not fast and he did not break it. He was then asked
about fasting for two days and breaking one day. He {the
Prophet} said: And who has strength enough to do it? He

was asked about fasting for a day and breaking for two days,
whereupon he said: May Allah bestow upon us strength to
do it. He was then asked about fasting for a day and breaking
on the other, whereupon he said: That is the fasting of my
brother David {peace be upon him}. He was then asked
about fasting on Monday, whereupon he said: It was the day
on which I was born. on which I was commissioned with
prophet hood or revelation was sent to me, {and he further}
said: Three days' fasting every month and of the whole of
Ramadan every year is a perpetual fast. He was asked about
fasting on the day of 'Arafah {9th of Dhu'I-Hijja},
whereupon he said: It expiates the sins of the preceding year
and the coming year. He was asked about fasting on the day
of 'Ashura {10th of Muharram}, whereupon be said: It
expiates the sins of the preceding year. {Imam Muslim said
that in this hadith there is a} narration of Imam Shu'ba that
he was asked about fasting on Monday and Thursday, but we
{Imam Muslim} did not mention Thursday for we found it
as an error {in reporting}. 1
Jabir reported Allah’s messenger as saying: When
the day of ‘Arafah comes Allah descends to the lowest
heaven and praises them to the angels saying, “Look at my
servants who have come to me disheveled, dusty and crying
out from every deep valley. I call you to witness that I have
forgiven them.” Then the angels say, “My Lord, so and so
was being suspected of sin, also so and so and such and such
a woman.” He said that Allah who is great and glorious

replies, “I have forgiven them.” Allah’s messenger said, “No

day has more people set free from hell than the day of
‘Arafah.” It is transmitted in Sharh As-Sunna. 1
Anas reported Allah's messenger as saying that when
lailat al-qadr comes Gabriel descends with a company of
angels who invoke blessings on everyone who is standing or
sitting and remembering Allah who is great and glorious.
Then when their festival day comes, i.e. the day when they
break their fast, Allah speaks proudly of them to His angels
saying, “My angels, what is the reward of a hired servant
who has fully accomplished his work?” They reply, “Our
Lord, his reward is that he should be paid his wage in full.”
He says, “My angels, my male and female servants have
fulfilled what I have made obligatory for them, and then
have come out raising their voices in supplication. By my
might, glory, honour, high dignity, and exalted station, I will
certainly answer them.” Then He says, “Return, for I have
forgiven you and changed your evil deeds into good deeds.”
He said that they then return having received forgiveness.
Baihaqi transmitted it in Shu'ab al-iman.

Chapter Three

Obtaining Allah’s Forgiveness Through

Misfortunes, Illnesses and other
Calamities

N
arrated Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri and Abu Huraira: The
Prophet {‫ }ﷺ‬said, "No fatigue, nor disease, nor
sorrow, nor sadness, nor hurt, nor distress befalls a
Muslim, even if it were the prick he receives from a thorn,
but that Allah expiates some of his sins for that." 1
'A'isha reported: I heard Allah's Messenger {‫ }ﷺ‬as
saying: There is nothing {in the form of trouble} that comes
to a believer even if it is the pricking of a thorn that there is
decreed for him by Allah good or his sins are obliterated. 2
Abu Sa'id and Abu Huraira reported that they heard
Allah's Messenger {‫ }ﷺ‬as saying: Never a believer is

Sahih Muslim, 2572 g

stricken with discomfort, hardship or illness, grief or even

with mental worry that his sins are not expiated for him. 1
Abu Huraira reported that when this verse was
revealed: "Whoever does evil will be requited for it", and
when this was conveyed to the Muslims they were greatly
perturbed. Thereupon Allah's Messenger {‫ }ﷺ‬said: Be
moderate and stand firm in trouble that falls to the lot of a
Muslim {as that} is an expiation for him; even stumbling on
the path or the pricking of a thorn {are an expiation for him}.
Muslim said that 'Umar b. Abd al-Rahman Muhaisin was
from amongst the people of Mecca. 2
Jabir b. Abdullah reported that Allah's Messenger
{‫ }ﷺ‬visited Umm Sa'ib or Umm Musayyib and said: Umm
Sa'ib or Umm Musayyib. why is it that you are shivering?
She said:" It is fever and may it not be blessed by Allah,
whereupon he {the Prophet} said: Don't curse fever for it
expiates the sin of the children of Adam just as furnace
removes the alloy of iron. 3

‘A’isha reported Allah’s messenger as saying,

“When a man’s sins are numerous and he has no good deeds
wherewith to atone for them, Allah afflicts him with sorrow
to remove them from him.” Ahmad transmitted it. 4

'Abdu'r-Rahman ibn Sa'id reported that his father

said, "I was with Salman when he visited a sick person in
Kinda. When he went in, he said, 'Good news! Allah makes
the illness of the believer an expiation for him and a
restoration, whereas the illness of the corrupt person is like
a camel whose people hobble it and the let it go. It does not
know why it was hobbled or released.' 1
Abu Hurayra reported that the Prophet, {‫}ﷺ‬, said, "A
Muslim does not encounter fatigue, tiredness, concern,
sorrow, injury or grief, or even a thorn which pricks him
without Allah expiating his errors for him by that." 2
Abu Hurayra reported that the Prophet, {‫}ﷺ‬, said,
"Affliction will continue to trouble the believers, men and
women, in their bodies, their families, and their property
until they meet Allah Almighty purified of every wrong
action." 3
It is reported by Ayeshah that the Prophet {‫ }ﷺ‬said,
"When a Believer falls ill, Allah cleans him of sin as a kiln
removes the rust from iron". 4
It is narrated by Ayeshah {ra} that the Prophet {‫}ﷺ‬
said, "when a Muslim is afflicted by an anxiety, pain or
sickness then, because of that, his sins are atoned. So much,

so that if a thorn pricks him or he suffers a simple, minor

injury {His sins are forgiven}”. 1
It is narrated by Abdullah bin Amr that Prophet {‫}ﷺ‬
said, "When a person falls ill then the reward of those deeds
is also recorded for him which he used to perform when he
was healthy. 2
Anas bin Malik has reported that the Prophet {‫}ﷺ‬
said, "When Allah involves a Muslim in bodily {pain then
he is credited with a reward for those deeds which he was
used to do when he was healthy as long as he is ill. Thus, if
Allah gives him healing, He washes him {clean of sins}. But,
if he causes him to die then he forgives him. 3
Aswad reported that some young men from the
Quraysh visited 'A'isha as she was in Mina and they were
laughing. She said: What makes you laugh? They said: Such
and such person stumbled against the rope of the tent and he
was about to break his neck or lose his eyes. She said: Don't
laugh for I heard Allah's Messenger {‫ }ﷺ‬as saying: If a
Muslim runs a thorn or {gets into trouble} severe than this,
there is assured for him {a higher} rank and his sins are
obliterated. 4

decreed for him by Allah good or his sins are obliterated. 2
Abu Sa'id and Abu Huraira reported that they heard
Allah's Messenger {‫ }ﷺ‬as saying: Never a believer is
stricken with discomfort, hardship or illness, grief or even
with mental worry that his sins are not expiated for him. 3
Anas reported Allah’s messenger as saying, “When
a Muslim is afflicted with some trouble in his body the angel
is told to record for him his good deeds which he was
accustomed to do. Then if Allah cures him He washes and
purifies him {from sins}, and if He takes him in death He
forgives him and shows mercy to him.” Transmitted in Sharh
As-Sunna. 4

Chapter Four

Obtaining Allah’s Forgiveness Through

Seeking Forgiveness from Allah

N
arrated Abu Huraira: I heard the Prophet {‫}ﷺ‬
saying, "If somebody commits a sin and then says,
'O my Lord! I have sinned, please forgive me!' and
his Lord says, 'My slave has known that he has a Lord who
forgives sins and punishes for it, I therefore have forgiven
my slave {his sins}.' Then he remains without committing
any sin for a while and then again commits another sin and
says, 'O my Lord, I have committed another sin, please
forgive me,' and Allah says, 'My slave has known that he has
a Lord who forgives sins and punishes for it, I therefore have
forgiven my slave {his sin}. Then he remains without
Committing any another sin for a while and then commits
another sin {for the third time} and says, 'O my Lord, I have
committed another sin, please forgive me,' and Allah says,
'My slave has known that he has a Lord Who forgives sins
55

and punishes for it I therefore have forgiven My slave {his

sin}, he can do whatever he likes." 1
Bilal bin Yasar bin Zaid {the freed slave of the
Prophet{‫ }ﷺ‬narrated: “My father narrated to me, from my
grandfather, that he heard the Prophet {‫ }ﷺ‬say: ‘Whoever
says: “I seek forgiveness from Allah, the Magnificent, whom
there is none worthy of worship but Him, the Living, Al-
Qayyum, and I repent to him,” {Astaghfirullāhal-`Aẓīm
alladhī lā ilāha illā huwal-Ḥayyul-Qayyūmu wa atūbu ilaih}
then Allah will forgive him, even if he fled from battle.’” 2
Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar: We counted that the
Messenger of Allah {‫ }ﷺ‬would say a hundred times during
a meeting: "My Lord, forgive me and pardon me; You are
the Pardoning and forgiving One". 3
Narrated Zayd, the client of the Prophet: The Prophet
{‫ }ﷺ‬said: If anyone says: "I ask pardon of Allah than Whom
there is no deity, the Living, the eternal, and I turn to Him in
repentance," he will be pardoned, even if he has fled in time
of battle. 4
Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: The Prophet {‫ }ﷺ‬said:
If anyone continually asks pardon, Allah will appoint for him
a way out of every distress, and a relief from every anxiety,
and will provide for him from where he did not reckon. 5

Al-Agharr al-Muzani said {Musaddad in his version

of this tradition said that he was a Companion of the
Prophet}: The Messenger of Allah {‫ }ﷺ‬said: My heart is
invaded by unmindfulness, and I ask Allah's pardon a
hundred times in the day. 1
Thawban, the client of Messenger of Allah {‫ }ﷺ‬said:
When the Prophet {‫ }ﷺ‬finished the prayer, he asked
forgiveness three times and said: "O Allah." The narrator
then narrated the tradition like that of 'Aishah. 2
Narrated Mihjan ibn al-Adra': The Messenger of
Allah {‫ }ﷺ‬entered the mosque and saw a man who had
finished his prayer, and was reciting the tashahhud saying:
O Allah, I ask you, O Allah, the One, the eternally besought
of all, He begetteth not, nor was He begotten, and there is
none comparable unto Him, that you may forgive me my
sins, you are Most Forgiving, Merciful. He {the Prophet}
said: He was forgiven {repeating three times.} 3
Abu Sa'id reported Allah's messenger as saying that
if anyone says three times when going to bed, "I ask the
forgiveness of Allah than whom there is no Allah, the
Living, the Eternal, and I turn in repentance to Him," Allah
will forgive him his sins, even if they are like the foam of the
sea, or in number like the sand which is accumulated, * or as
many as the leaves of the trees, or as numerous as the days
of this world. *The word is ‘alij. Some say ‘Alij is a place in

the desert, the translation being ‘the sand of ‘Alij; others

treat it as translated above. Tirmidhi transmitted it, saying
this is a gharib tradition. 1
Abu Huraira reported Allah’s messenger as saying
that if anyone sits in an assembly where there is much
clamour* and says before getting up to leave, “Glory be to
You, O Allah, and I begin with praise of You; I testify that
there is no Allah but You; I ask Your pardon and turn to You
in repentance,” he will be forgiven for what took place in
that assembly where he was. *Or, ‘wicked talk,’ or,
'meaningless talk' Tirmidhi and Baihaqi in {Kitab} ad-
Da'awat al-kabir, transmitted it. 2
Abu Dharr reported Allah’s messenger as stating that
Allah most high says, “My servants, all of you are astray
except him whom I have guided, but if you ask me for
guidance I will guide you; all of you are poor except him
whom I have enriched, but if you ask of me I will give you
provision; all of you are sinners except him whom I have
preserved {from sin}, but if any of you knows that I have
power to pardon and ask my pardon I will pardon him, and I
do not care; if the first and the last of you, the living and the
dead among you, those of you who are fresh and those of
you who are withered, 3 had all hearts as pious as the heart
of the most pious of my servants, that would not add as much
as a gnat’s wing to my dominion; if the first and last of you,
the living and the dead among you, those of you who are

1

Mishkat al-Masabih, 2433

fresh and those of you who are withered, had all hearts as
wretched as the heart of the most wretched of my servants,
that would not diminish as much as a gnat’s wing from my
dominion; if the first and last of you, the living and the dead
among you, those of you who are fresh and those of you who
are withered, were gathered in one plain, each one of you
asking all he could hope for, and I were to grant the request
of each of you who asked, that would cause no more
diminution in my dominion than if one of you passed by the
sea and, after dipping a needle in it, took it out, that being
because I am generous and glorious, doing what I wish. My
giving is speech and my punishment is speech. My command
to a thing when I want it is just to say to it ‘Be’ and it comes
into being.” {Surah An-Naml: 40 and Surah Yasin: 82}. 1
He reported Allah’s messenger as saying, “Allah has
angels who go about on the roads seeking those who
remember Allah, and when they find people doing so they
call to one another, ‘Come to what you are looking for’, and
surround them with their wings up to the lowest heaven.” He
said that their Lord then asks them, although He is best
informed about them, “What are my servants saying?” They
reply, “They are extolling, magnifying, praising and
glorifying You.” He asks whether they have seen Him, and
when they reply, “No indeed, they have not seen You,” He
asks how they would act if they had seen Him, to which they
reply, “If they had seen You they would have engaged more
earnestly in worshipping and glorifying You, and would

1
Mishkat al-Masabih, 2350
59

have extolled You much more.” He then says, “What are

they asking for?” and they reply, “They are asking You for
paradise.” He asks whether they have seen it, and when they
reply, “No indeed, my Lord, they have not seen it,” He asks
how they would act if they had seen it to which they reply,
“If they had seen it they would have been more intensely
eager for it, would have asked more earnestly for it, and
would have had a greater desire for it.” He asks what they
are seeking refuge from, to which they reply that it is from
hell. He asks whether they have seen it, and when they reply,
“No indeed, my Lord, they have not seen it,” He asks how
they would act if they had seen it, to which they reply, “If
they had seen it they would have been more earnest in flying
from it and fearing it.” He then says, “I call you to witness
that I have forgiven them.” One of the angels says, “Among
them is so and so who does not belong to their number, but
has come only for something he wants,” and He replies,
“They are people who are seated together, and he who sits
with them will not be miserable.” Bukhari transmitted it. In
Muslim's version he said that Allah has angels who travel
round to a great extent looking for meetings where
remembrance is being made of Allah, and when they find a
meeting where this is being done they sit with them and
surround one another, with their wings so as to fill the space
between them and the lowest heaven. When the people
separate they ascend up to heaven, and Allah who knows
best asks them where they have come from. They reply, “We
have come from Your servants on the earth who are extolling
and magnifying You, declaring Your unity, praising You and
60

making request of You.” He says, “For what are they asking

me?” and they reply, “They are asking You for Your
paradise.” He asks whether they have seen His paradise, and
when they reply, “No my Lord.” He asks how they would
act if they had seen His paradise. They say, “They are also
seeking Your protection.” He asks, “From what are they
seeking my protection?” and they reply, “From Your fire.”
He asks whether they have seen His fire, and when they reply
that they have not, He asks how they would act if they had
seen His fire. They say, “They are also asking Your
forgiveness,” to which He replies, “I have forgiven them,
given them what they have asked for, and protected them
from what they sought protection.” They say, “My Lord, so
and so, a sinner, is among them, who just happening to pass
by sat down with them.” He replies, “Him also I have
forgiven. They are the people by reason of whom their
associate will not be miserable.” 1
Abu Sa'id reported Allah’s messenger as saying that
the devil said, “By Your might, my Lord, I shall continue to
lead Your servants astray as long as their spirits are in their
bodies” The Lord who is great and glorious replied, “By my
might, glory and exalted station, I shall continue to pardon
them as long as they ask my forgiveness.” Ahmad
transmitted it. 2
Ibn ‘Umar reported Allah’s messenger as saying,
“Allah accepts a servant’s repentance till he gives up his

spirit in death.” * *The Arabic is ma lam yugharghir, which

might, be translated literally "as long as he has not died with
the death rattle in his throat." Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah
transmitted it. 1
Abu Huraira reported Allah’s messenger as saying,
“When a believer sins there is black spot in his heart, and if
he repents and asks pardon his heart is polished; but if he
does more it increases till it gains the ascendancy over his
heart. That is the rust mentioned by Allah Most High, 'Nay,
but what they were committing has spread like rust over their
hearts'.” Surah Al-Mutaffifin: 14. Ahmad, Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah
transmitted it, Tirmidhi saying this is a Hasan Sahih
tradition. 2
Abu Bakr as-Siddiq reported Allah's messenger as
saying, “He who asks pardon is not a confirmed sinner, even
if he returns to his sin seventy times a day.” Tirmidhi and
Abu Dawud transmitted it. 3
Ibn ‘Abbas reported Allah’s messenger as stating
that Allah has said, “If anyone knows that I have power to
forgive sins I will pardon him and not care, so long as he
associates nothing with me.” It is transmitted in Sharh As-
Sunna. 4
Anas reported Allah’s messenger as stating that
Allah has said, “Son of Adam, as long as you supplicate me

and hope in me I will pardon you in spite of what you have

done, and I do not care. Son of Adam, if your sins were so
numerous as to reach the lofty regions of the sky, then you
asked my forgiveness, I would forgive you, and I do not care.
Son of Adam, if you were to meet me with enough sins to
fill the earth, then met me not associating anything with me,
I would bring you as much pardon as would fill the earth.”
Tirmidhi transmitted it, and Ahmad and Darimi transmitted
it from Abu Dharr. Tirmidhi said this is a Hasan gharib
tradition. 1
Shaddad b. Anas reported Allah’s messenger as
saying that the best manner of asking pardon is to say, “O
Allah, You are my Lord. There is no Allah but You. You
have created me, and I am Your servant and hold to Your
covenant and promise as much as I can. I seek refuge in You
from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge Your
favour to me, and I acknowledge my sin. Pardon me, for
none but You pardons sins.” He said that if anyone says it
during the day-time with firm belief in it and dies that day
before evening, he will be one of those who go to paradise;
and if anyone says it during the night with firm belief in it
and dies before morning, he will be one of those who go to
paradise. Bukhari transmitted it. 2
Jundub said that Allah’s messenger told of a man
saying, “I swear by Allah that Allah will not forgive so and
so,” whereupon Allah most high said, “Who is this who

Mishkat al-Masabih, 2335

swears that I will not forgive so and so? For I have forgiven
so and so and have made your deeds to come to nothing”, or
words to that effect. Muslim transmitted it. 1
Abu Huraira said that Allah’s messenger told of a
man who committed a sin and said, "My Lord, I have sinned,
so forgive me.” His Lord replied, “Does my servant know
that he has a Lord who pardons sin and punishes for it? I
have pardoned my servant." After remaining {obedient}
such time as Allah willed he committed a sin and said, “My
Lord, I have sinned, so forgive me.” His Lord replied, “Does
my servant know that he has a Lord who pardons sin and
punishes for it? I have pardoned my servant.” Then after
remaining {obedient} such time as Allah willed he
committed a sin and said, “My Lord, I have committed
another sin, so forgive me.” He replied, “Does my servant
know that he has a Lord who pardons sin and punishes for
it? I have pardoned my servant, so let him do what he likes.”
{Bukhari and Muslim.} 2
Anas reported Allah’s messenger as saying, "Allah is
more pleased with the repentance of His servant when he
turns penitently towards Him than one of you would be if his
riding-beast which was carrying his food and drink escaped
from him in a waterless desert and he, despairing of
recovering it, went and lay down in the shade of a tree, then
suddenly saw it standing beside him and, seizing its halter,
said from excess of joy, ‘O Allah, You are my servant and I

am Your lord’, making a mistake from excess of joy.”

Muslim transmitted it. 1
'A’isha reported Allah’s messenger as saying, "When
a servant acknowledges his sin and repents, Allah forgives
him.” {Bukhari and Muslim.} 2
Abu Musa reported Allah’s messenger as saying,
"Allah stretches out His hand at night that those who have
done evil during the day may repent and stretches out His
hand in the day-time that those who have done evil during
the night may repent, until {the time when} the sun rises in
the west." Muslim transmitted it. 3
Al-Agharr al-Muzani reported Allah’s messenger as
saying, “My heart is invaded by unmindfulness, and I ask
Allah’s pardon a hundred times in the day.” Muslim
transmitted it. 4
Abu Huraira reported Allah’s messenger as saying,
“I swear by Allah that I ask Allah’s pardon and turn to him
in repentance more than seventy times a day.” Bukhari
transmitted it. 5

Chapter Five

Seeking Allah’s Forgiveness Through

Remembrance {Zikr}

I
brahim bin Muhammad bin Sa`d narrated from his
father, from Sa`d that the Messenger of Allah {‫ }ﷺ‬said:
“The supplication of Dhun-Nun {Prophet {‫ }ﷺ‬Yunus}
when he supplicated, while in the belly of the whale was:
‘There is none worthy of worship except You, Glory to You,
Indeed, I have been of the transgressors. {Lā ilāha illā anta
subḥānaka innī kuntu minaẓ-ẓālimīn}’ So indeed, no
Muslim man supplicates with it for anything, ever, except
Allah responds to him.” 1
Tamim Ad-Dari narrated that: The Messsenger of
Allah {‫ }ﷺ‬said: “Whoever says ten times: ‘I bear witness
that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah. Alone,
without partner, One Deity, the One, As-Samad, He did not
take a wife, nor a child, nor is there anyone like Him, {Ash-

waladan wa lam yakun lahu kufuwan aḥad}’ Allah will write

for him forty million good deeds.” 1
Narrated Abu Dharr: I came to the Prophet {‫ }ﷺ‬while
he was wearing white clothes and sleeping. Then I went back
to him again after he had got up from his sleep. He said,
"Nobody says: 'None has the right to be worshipped but
Allah' and then later on he dies while believing in that,
except that he will enter Paradise." I said, "Even if he had
committed illegal sexual intercourse and theft?" He said.
'Even if he had committed illegal sexual intercourse and
theft." I said, "Even if he had committed illegal sexual
intercourse and theft?" He said. 'Even if he had committed
illegal sexual intercourse and theft." I said, 'Even if he had
committed illegal sexual intercourse and theft?' He said,
"Even if he had committed illegal sexual intercourse and
theft, inspite of the Abu Dharr's dislike. Abu `Abdullah said,
"This is at the time of death or before it if one repents and
regrets and says "None has the right to be worshipped but
Allah. He will be forgiven his sins." 2
Abu Hurairah {may Allah be pleased with him}
narrated that: The Prophet {‫ }ﷺ‬said: “No group gather in a
sitting in which they do not remember Allah, nor sent Salat
upon their Prophet, except it will be a source of remorse for
them. If He wills, He will punish them, and if He wills, He
will forgive them.” 3

Abu Hurairah narrates that: The Messenger of Allah

{‫ }ﷺ‬said: “Whoever says: ‘There is none worthy of worship
except Allah, Alone, without partner, to Him belongs all that
exists and to Him belongs the praise, He gives life and causes
death, and He is Powerful over all things, {Lā ilāha illallāh,
waḥdahu lā sharīka lahu, lahul-mulku wa lahul-ḥamdu,
yuḥyī wa yumītu, wa huwa `alā kulli shay’in qadīr}’ a
hundred times in a day, it will be for him the equivalent of
freeing ten slaves, and there shall be written for him a
hundred good deeds, and a hundred bad deeds shall be wiped
out for him, and it will be a protection for him from Shaitan
on that day, until he reaches the evening. And none has
brought better than it, except for one who has done more than
that.” And with this chain, from the Prophet {‫}ﷺ‬, that he
said: “Whoever says: ‘Glory is to Allah, and with His Praise
{Subḥān Allāh, wa biḥamdih}’ a hundred times, his sins are
forgiven, even if they were more than the foam of the sea.”
1

Abu Hurairah narrated that: The Messenger of Allah

{‫ }ﷺ‬said: “Whoever says: ‘Glory is to Allah, and with His
Praise {Subḥān Allāh, wa biḥamdih}’ a hundred times, his
sins are forgiven, even if they were like the foam of the sea.”
2

Mus`ab bin Sa`d narrated from his father, that: The

Messenger of Allah {‫ }ﷺ‬said to those sitting with him: “Is
one of you incapable of attaining a thousand good deeds?”

1

So a questioner among those seated with him asked him:

“How can one of us earn a thousand good deeds?” He said:
“{When} one of you recites a hundred Tasbīḥāt a thousand
good deeds are written for him, and a thousand evil deeds
are wiped away from him.” 1
Abdullah bin Amr narrated that: The Messenger of
Allah {‫ }ﷺ‬said: “there is not anyone upon the earth who
says: ‘None has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and
Allah is the Greatest, and there is no might nor power except
by Allah, {Lā ilāha illallāh, wa Allāhu akbar, wa lā ḥawla
wa lā quwwata illā billāh} except that his sins shall be
pardoned, even if they were like the foam of the sea.” 2
Sahl bin Mu`adh bin Anas narrated from his father
that: The Messenger of Allah {‫ }ﷺ‬said: “Whoever eats food
and then says: ‘All praise is due to Allah who fed me this
and granted it as provision to me, without any effort from me
nor power, {Al-ḥamdulillāh, alladhī aṭ`amanī hādha wa
razaqanīhi min ghairi ḥawlin minnī, wa lā quwwatin}’ his
past sins shall be forgiven.” 3
Ibn Umar said: “In one sitting of the Messenger of
Allah {‫}ﷺ‬, one could count that he said a hundred time,
before he would get up: ‘O my Lord, forgive me, and accept
my repentance. Verily, You are the Oft-Returning, the Most

Tawwābul-Ghafūr}.’” 1
Abu Hurairah narrated that: The Messenger of Allah
{‫ }ﷺ‬said: “Whoever sits in a sitting and engages in much
empty, meaningless speech and then says before getting
from that sitting of his: ‘Glory is to You, O Allah, and praise,
I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except
You, I seek You forgiveness, and I repent to You,
{Subḥānaka Allāhumma wa biḥamdika, ashhadu an lā ilāha
illā anta, astaghfiruka wa atūbu ilaik}’ whatever occurred in
that sitting would be forgiven to him.” 2
Ibn `Umar narrated that one day, The Messenger of
Allah {‫ }ﷺ‬said to his Companions: “Say ‘Glory is to Allah
and with His Praise {Subḥān Allāh, wa biḥamdih}’ a
hundred times. Whoever says {it} one time, it is written for
him ten, and whoever says it ten {times}, it is written for him
a hundred, and whoever says it a hundred {times}, it is
written for him a thousand, and whoever increases, Allah
will increase for him, and whoever seeks Allah’s
forgiveness, {Allah} will forgive him.” 3
Ibrahim bin Muhammad bin Sa`d narrated from his
father, from Sa`d that the Messenger of Allah {‫ }ﷺ‬said: “The

Muslim man supplicates with it for anything, ever, except
Allah responds to him.” 1
Ali {may Allah be pleased with him} said: “The
Messenger of Allah {‫ }ﷺ‬said to me: ‘Should I not teach you
some words that if you say them, Allah will forgive you,
even if you were already forgiven?’ He said: ‘Say: None has
the right to be worshipped by Allah, the Most High, the
Magnificent. None has the right to be worshipped by Allah,
the Forbearing, the Generous. None has the right to be
worshipped but Allah. Glory to Allah, the Lord of the

Anas narrated that the Messenger of Allah {‫ }ﷺ‬said:
“Whoever says in the morning: ‘O Allah we have reached
morning, calling You to witness, and calling the carriers of
Your Throne to witness, and Your angels, and all of Your
creation, that You are Allah, none has the right to be
worshipped but You, Alone, without partner, and that
Muhammad {‫ }ﷺ‬is Your slave and Your Messenger.

for whatever he does that day, and if he says it in the evening,

Allah will forgive him for whatever sin he commits that
night.” 1
It was narrated that Anas bin Malik said: "A man
come to the Prophet {saas} and said: 'O Messenger of Allah,
what supplication is best?' He said: 'Ask your Lord for
forgiveness and to be kept safe and sound in this world and
in the Hereafter.' Then {the man} came the next day and
said: 'O Messenger of Allah, what supplication is best?' He
said: 'Ask your Lord for forgiveness and to be kept safe and
sound in this world and in the Hereafter.' Then {the man}
came the third day and said: 'O Prophet {‫ }ﷺ‬of Allah, what
supplication is best?' He said: 'Ask your Lord for forgiveness
and to be kept safe and sound in this world and in the
Hereafter, for if you are forgiven and kept safe and sound in
this world and the Hereafter, you will have succeeded.'" 2
It was narrated that ‘Ubadah bin As-Samit said: “The
Messenger of Allah {‫ }ﷺ‬said: ‘Whoever wakes up in the
morning and says upon waking: La ilaha illallah wahdahu la
sharika lahu, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu, wa Huwa ‘ala

Abdullah bin Amr narrated that: The Messenger of
Allah {‫ }ﷺ‬said: “there is not anyone upon the earth who

Chapter Six

On The General Forgiveness of Allah

I
t was narrated from Abdullah bin Abi Talha, from his
father, that: The Messenger of Allah {‫ }ﷺ‬came one day
with a cheerful expression on his face, and we said: "We
see you looking cheerful". He said: "The Angel came to me
and said: 'O Muhammad, your Lord says: 'Will it not please
you {to know} that no one will send Salah upon you that I
will send Salah upon him tenfold, and no one will send
salaams upon you but I will send salaams upon him
tenfold?'" 1
Anas bin Malik said: "The Messenger of Allah {‫}ﷺ‬
said: "Whoever sends Salah upon me once, Allah {SWT}
will send Salah upon him tenfold, and will erase ten sins
from him, and will raise him ten degrees in status." 2
Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger {‫ }ﷺ‬said,
"While a man was on the way, he found a thorny branch of

a tree there on the way and removed it. Allah thanked him
for that deed and forgave him." 1
Abu Hurairah narrated that the Messenger of Allah
{S.A.W} said: "The gates of Paradise are opened on Monday
and Thursday. In them, {will enter} whoever has not
associated anything with Allah will be forgiven, except for
the two who shun each other, {about whom} it is said:
'Return these two until they make amends." 2
Narrated 'Ali: If a man visits a patient in the evening,
seventy thousand angels come along with him seeking
forgiveness from Allah for him till the morning, and he will
have a garden in the Paradise. 3
On the authority of Ibn Abbas, the Prophet, may
Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him, said: “Purify these
bodies, and Allah will purify you. For there is no servant
who spends the night in purity except that an angel spends
the night with him in his robe. He does not turn up for an
hour of the night without saying: O Allah, forgive your
servant, for he has spent the night pure. 4
Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger {‫ }ﷺ‬said,
"A prostitute was forgiven by Allah, because, passing by a
panting dog near a well and seeing that the dog was about to
die of thirst, she took off her shoe, and tying it with her head-

because of that." 1
Abu Hurairah narrated that: The Messenger of Allah
said: "Whoever performs Hajj for Allah, and he does not
have sexual relations nor commit any sin, then his previous
sins will be forgiven." 2
Narrated Al-Bara bin 'Azib: that the Messenger of
Allah {‫ }ﷺ‬said: "No two Muslims meet each other and shake
hands, except that Allah forgives them before they part." 3
Narrated Al-Bara' ibn Azib: The Prophet {‫ }ﷺ‬said:
Two Muslims will not meet and shake hands having their
sins forgiven them before they separate. 4
Narrated Mu'adh ibn Anas: The Prophet {‫ }ﷺ‬said: If
anyone eats food and then says: "Praise be to Allah Who has
fed me with this food and provided me with it through no
might and power on my part," he will be forgiven his former
and later sins. If anyone puts on a garment and says: "Praise
be to Allah Who has clothed me with this and provided me
with it through no might and power on my part," he will be
forgiven his former and later sins. 5

Two Muslims will not meet and shake hands, except having
their sins forgiven them before they separate. 1
It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the
Messenger of Allah {‫ }ﷺ‬said: “The pilgrims performing
Hajj and ‘Umrah are a delegation to Allah. If they call upon
Him, He will answer them; and if they ask for His
forgiveness, He will forgive them.” 2
It was narrated from Mu'adh bin Jabal that the:
Messenger of Allah{‫ }ﷺ‬said: "There is no soul that died
bearing witness to La ilaha illallah, and that I am the
Messenger of Allah, from the heart with certainty, but Allah
will forgive it." 3
It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that: The
Messenger of Allah{‫ }ﷺ‬said: "Whoever says one hundred
times each day: La ilaha illahu wahdahu la sharikalahu, wa

better then him except one who says more.'" 1
It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet
{‫ }ﷺ‬said: "There is a surah in the Qur'an, with thirty verses,
which will intercede for its companion {the one who recites
it} until he is forgiven: Tabarakal-ladhi bi yadihil mulk
{Blessed is He in Whose Hand is the Dominion}." 2
Hanzalah bin 'Ali narrated that: Mihjan bin Al-Adra'
narrated to him that the Messenger of Allah {‫ }ﷺ‬entered the
masjid and there was a man who had finished his prayer and
he was reciting the tashahhud. He said: "Allahumma inni

Umm Salama said she heard Allah's messenger say,
“If anyone puts on the ihram for a hajja or an ‘umra from the
Aqsa mosque to the sacred mosque, his former and latter sins
will be forgiven him," or, “he will be guaranteed paradise."
Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah transmitted it. 4
Mu'adh b. Anas reported Allah’s messenger as
stating that if anyone eats food and then says, “Praise be to
Allah who has fed me with this food and provided me with

his former and latter sins. 1
Tirmidhi said this is a Hasan gharib
tradition. 2
Ibn ‘Abbas reported Allah’s messenger as stating
that Allah has said, “If anyone knows that I have power to
forgive sins I will pardon him and not care, so long as he
associates nothing with me.” It is transmitted in Sharh As-
Sunna. 3

Seeking Forgiveness for the Muslim

Ummah

O
Allah, forgive us our sins and our extravagance in
our affairs. O Allah, forgive us what we have done
before, what we have delayed, what we have
concealed, what we have revealed, and what we have
concealed. For You are the advancer, You are the delayer,
and You are capable of all things. O Allah, forgive us our
sins and our extravagance in our affairs. O Allah, make us
live as Muslims, and cause us to die as believers, and join us
with the righteous. O Allah, make us steadfast. And we
follow the religion, O Most Merciful of the Merciful. O
Allah, relieve the anxious and relieve the anguish of the
afflicted. O Allah, we ask you to provide steadfastness for
our Mujahideen brothers. Oh Allah, calamity has befallen
our brothers. No one knows except You, and You are the
Most Merciful, the Most Merciful, and You are capable of
all things. Oh Allah, you are kind to your servants. Oh Allah,
relieve them of what has been revealed to them, and remove
the harm that befell them, O Most Merciful of the merciful.
Oh Allah, make us safe and reassured in our country.
Whoever wants this country of ours and the countries of the
95

Muslims to do evil, plot against him and put his plot in his
throat. Our seal, and forgive our sins, and give us life as
Muslims, and cause us to be believers, and join us with the
righteous. {180} Exalted is your Lord, the Lord of might,
above what they describe {181} And peace be upon the
messengers {182} And praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
{Surat Al-Saffat: 180-182}.

Conclusion

I
wrote this humble book because I had in mind the
greatness of seeking forgiveness and the great reward of
those who ask for forgiveness, I consulted my sheikhs in
writing the book. Their virtue did not spare me the dearest
words of encouragement, so I embarked on that despite the
challenges, but it was a humble initiative on my part, so I
named it The book: “Encouragement on Seeking Allah’s
Forgiveness.” I ask Allah to accept it and forgive me for
what I have done in the past and what I have done in the
future, and will make it remain forever and be useful to you
and me, and the purpose in that is to obtain Allah’s
compassion and compassion. His grace and blessings, He is
the Forgiving, the Most Merciful.
