CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM

BACKGOUND OF THE STUDY

Alcohol, in the context of beverages, typically refers to ethanol (ethyl alcohol). It is a

psychoactive substance that is commonly consumed in various alcoholic drinks such as beer,

wine, and spirits.

According to Heckman & Silviera (2009) Ethanol (C2H6O), also called ethyl alcohol, is

a colorless liquid found in all alcoholic Beverages, along with compounds such as methanol,

Higher alcohols, aldehydes, esters, organic acids Etc. The maximum concentrations and ratios of

These compounds vary according to the processes Required to manufacture the most diverse

types of Beverages, thus conferring on them characteristic Flavors

In recent years, research on the experience of alcohol to student has continued to

expand.studies have examined the effect of alcohol On wide range of outcomes, including

academic performance, Physical and mental health, risky behavior, and social relationship.

Recent neurological research suggests that underage drinking can impair learning directly

by causing alterations in the structure and function of the developing brain with consequences

reaching far beyond adolescence (Brown et al., 2000; White & Swartzwelder, 2004). Negative

effects of alcohol use can emerge in areas such as planning and executive functioning, memory,

spatial operations, and attention (Brown et al., 2000; Giancola & Mezzich, 2000; Tapert &
Brown, 1999). Alcohol use could also affect performance by reducing the number of hours

committed to studying, completing homework assignments, and attending school.

Studies consistently show a link between alcohol use, particularly heavy drinking or

binge drinking, and lower academic achievement. Alcohol impairs memory, concentration, and

critical thinking skills, all of which are essential for learning and academic success. It can also

lead to sleep problems, absenteeism and accidents. It can also reduce productivity and

motivation.

This study focuses on the effects of alcohol to the senior high school of Balatong

Integrated School

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to determine the alcohol effects of SHS of Balatong Integrated School to

better understand the problem and to develop strategies for prevention and intervention

This study also aims to answer the following questions:

1. How does alcohol consumption influence students’ social relationships and interactions?

2. How does alcohol affect the senior high school students in terms of:

a. physical

b. mental and

c. emotional aspects?

3. What are the personal strategies student use to manage their alcohol consumption?
CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
HYPHOTHESIS

Heavy alcohol consumption among students of senior high school may increase the

likelihood of risky sexual behavior, unsafe driving, and engagement in violence.

This hypothesis is based on the following evidence:

Students who engage in high-risk drinking (e.g., binge drinking) experience higher rate

sof academic dishonesty.

Increased alcohol consumption is negatively correlated with academic performance

among students.

Students who consume alcohol are more likely to experience anxiety, depression, and

other mental health issues

Alcohol consumption contributes to risky social behavior among students.

Balatong Integrated School is located in a rural area, where students have lower

knowledge about the effect of alcohol.

It is important to note that this is just a hypothesis, and more research is needed to

confirm it. However, if this hypothesis is correct, it would have important implications for

developing and implementing interventions to address the effects of alcohol to senior high school

students in Blalatong Integrated Schooland other similar settings.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

This study aims to understand the alcohol effects on the SHS of Balatong Integrated

School. However, because the researcher believed that the scope of this study will be wide, this

study won’t talk about the reasons behind alcohol drinking.

The participants of the study consist of 15 SHS students of Balatong Integrated School.

SHS students are the focus of this study because they experience binge drinking.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Senior high school students are at a crucial developmental stage where peer pressure,

social identity formation, and experimentation with risky behaviors are common.

This study hopes to establish an understanding on the effects of alcohol to the senor high

school students. Furthermore, it will help to prevent and address binge drinking.

To the students, this study will help to better understand the nature and effect of alcohol

to SHS students. This study will serve as their day-to-day life as a student. As a result, they will

understand the risk of drinking alcohol.

In knowing the alcohol effects to SHS students, the researcher aims to establish ways to

stop and to address binge drinking. In this way, students who seeks guidance with their problem

will be addressed.
In addition, it will also help parents or each family members who can be a springboard to

guide and help them prevent alcohol consumption.

To the future researchers, the ideas presented may be used as a reference data in

conducting a new research or in testing the validity of all related findings.

DEFINITION OF TERMS
