Profession Profile #2 College Calculator & Scholarship Essay Harrison STEM Capstone

Introduction

College is expensive. Many of you may qualify for HOPE but statistics show that few of you will keep it. In fact, only
about 30% of students keep HOPE throughout their college career. Some of you may be going out of state to college so
HOPE is not an option. You may or may not get other scholarships, financial aid, or grants but because situations change,
it is important that you know and understand the cost for whomever is investing in you and your college tuition.

Procedure

Part I: College Cost Calculation Worksheet:

֍ Interns complete for ONLY ONE College, answer the analysis questions, then proceed to Part II
֍ Career Explorers complete for THREE different schools, answer the analysis questions, then proceed to Part II

Directions: Use this worksheet to compare the cost of attendance to 3 colleges of your choice. Of course, it is expected
that you will complete this for colleges you have been accepted to and/or applied to. DO NOT calculate in the HOPE
scholarship for any of the colleges even if you currently qualify!

Essay Prompt:
Describe the three characteristics of leadership you value most. Discuss why you believe that
these traits are so important and how you feel that they are developed in an individual.

In addition to the email, copy and paste your essay response below:

Is a leader a boss or consensus builder? I believe that although bosses can be leaders, a true
leader is a consensus builder. But, what are the qualities of a consensus builder? There are many qualities for
that type of leader, but I believe the three most important qualities are competence, empathy, and effective
communication skills.
When it comes to competence, it is defined by knowing what’s best for the team. Competent leaders
know what to do in an urgent situation and can handle their job effectively and efficiently. This quality is
essential in a leader because a leader must understand the work they want to lead for efficiency to be
achieved. Individuals can develop competence by studying, learning, and training in the field they want to lead.
Moving on to empathy, it is defined by understanding the different perspectives of the team. Empathetic
leaders comprehend the needs of their followers and advocate for teammates who may need help speaking up
for themselves. Empathy is especially crucial for leadership because leaders need to understand their
teammates' perspectives to act in accordance with their demands. Individuals can develop empathy by asking
for their team workers' opinions and actively listening to what they have to say.
Transitioning to communication skills, they are crucial for leaders as they involve conveying messages
with respect and clarity, ensuring that followers understand the leader's thought process. Good communication
includes being transparent and actively listening. The way leaders communicate is also important, emphasizing
the need for integrity in their communication. This is significant because leaders must lead by example,
demonstrating effective communication skills in their role. Individuals can develop communication skills through
experience and by listening to others.

To sum it up, when considering whether a leader is more like a boss or a consensus builder, it
becomes clear that a genuine leader leans towards being a consensus builder. Key qualities for effective
leadership include competence, empathy, and strong communication skills. Competence allows leaders to
make informed decisions for the team, while empathy ensures an understanding of diverse perspectives within
the group. Effective communication, marked by respect, clarity, and integrity, is crucial for leaders to express
their thoughts and set an example. In the end, a consensus-building leader possesses these qualities,
fostering a productive and harmonious work environment for the team.
