CALIBRATION INSTRUCTION – PLUG GAUGES

1.0 SCOPE

To establish a system for calibration of Plug gauges used in measurements of product

quality or process parameters.

2.0 RESPONSIBILITY

Dept. Head (QA) is responsible for the calibration of all Plug gauges used in the plant.

3.0 INSTRUCTIONS

3.1 As per the frequency decided in the Master List of Gauges and Calibration Plan
(QM/QA/P01/F11), take up the identified plug gauge for calibration.

3.2 Ensure that the environmental conditions are appropriate as defined in WI/QA/01 and
sufficient soaking time is given to the plug gauge in this environment.

3.3 Visually check the plug gauge for damage that could impair the accuracy or the use of the
gauge.

3.4 Arrange for rectification of any defects (if possible), if located as per clause 3.3.
If gauge is found to be defective it must be removed from use and identified with a sticker
specifying “Not To Be Used” until rectification / repair and re-calibration is carried out.

3.5 Using calibrated slip gauges, make a slip combination equal to the size of diameter of the
plug gauge.

3.6 Fix 1 micron plunger dial to a Mechanical Comparator and insert the slip combination under
the tip of the dial.

3.7 Set the dial reading to zero.

3.8 Roll plug gauge under the measuring point until readout ‘peaks’.

3.9 Note any difference between the reading of dial mounted on Mechanical Comparator and the
size etched on the plug gauge. Repeat this at various positions around the outside diameter
of the plug gauge.

3.10 Record the observations in Calibration History Card – Gauges (QM/QA/P01/F10).

3.11 Give disposition of calibration results based on acceptability criteria (wear limit) as
maintained by Section Head (QA) and / or mentioned in the Calibration History Card –
Gauges
(QM/QA/P01/F10).

3.12 Provide Calibration Status (by sticker or other means) on the calibrated Plug gauge
indicating calibration status and next due date.

3.13 In case gauge can not be rectified /repaired, gauge must be scraped & updated in the
Calibration History Card – Gauges (FORMAT/QA/10).
