Fill in the Gap:

Our planet is made up of a huge range of beautiful places, interesting
people, fascinating cultures and breathtaking environments! The study of
these, and how they interconnect is the field of GEOGRAPHY. The reason
we study it is so you can explore and understand the world and people
around you.
Geography encompasses a wide range of topics, including the physical
features of the planet (such as mountains, rivers, and ecosystems), the
human activities and societies that shape the world, and the
interconnectedness of these elements.

There are two main branches of geography:

Physical Geography

Human Geography

7 Geographical Concepts: SPICESS
Geographers use seven key concepts to help investigate and understand the world. The
acronym to remember them by is SPICESS!

1. Place
Identify a significant place for you and explain why it is important:

SPICESS
Concept Explanation (and example)
Place = significance A place is a part of the Earth’s surface that is identified and given meaning by
people.

Example: Uluru is a spiritual place for Indigenous Australians and is also a place
where tourists like to visit. Natural forces created this landform and tourism has
altered it in a variety of ways.

Space = location

Environment

Interconnection Seen by cause and effect relationships. Nothing exists in isolation!

● Natural process of interconnection such as the water cycle

● The connections between people and places such as migration

3
● The flow of trade between countries
● The exchange of cultures in multicultural cities - think of all of the different
food eaten by Australians!
● The exchange of information and ideas via social media.

Sustainability

Change

Examples. Types of changes: environmental, economic, social and technological.

These change at very different rates. Environmental changes are usually much
slower than economic, social and technological changes.
