The words a, an and the are called articles. These are demonstrative adjectives used to point people or things.A and an are indefinite articles. The is a definite
article. A and an suggest any person or thing.The suggests a particular person or thing.Eg: Bring a chair (any chair will do) Bring the chair lying near the window.(a
particular chair which is lying near the window.)
- We use the indefinite articles a and an before countable nouns in the singular number.
Eg.:
- a university
- a European
- a one rupee note
- a one eyed man
The words university and European begin with vowels- u and e. Both these are pronounced with the yooo sound which is a consonant sound. So, the article a is
used instead of an. Similarly the sound of vowel-o is ww which again is a consonant sound.
- ‘An’ is used before a countable noun in the singular number beginning with a vowel sound:
