A three-hinged arch is a structure composed of two curved segments, joined together by an internal hinge and supported at two external
hinges
Shear force refers to the force that acts parallel to the cross-section of a structural element
bending moment is the moment that occurs when an external force is applied to the element causing it to bend.
rigid frame is a structure composed of members which are connected by relatively stiff or rigid joints.
A truss is a structure composed of individual members joined together so as to form a series of triangles.
Method of Joints. The external reaction components are first determined by taking the whole truss as a free body.
method of sections involves the passing of a section through three members and applying the three equations of statics to the free body
on either side of the section.
Method of Moments and Shears. The method of moments and shears may be considered as merely a variation of the method of
sections. A horizontal truss subjected to vertical loads resembles a beam in its structural action. The top chord of the truss takes
compression and the bottom chord takes tension.
Monolithic Concrete Pouring – a pour of concrete, all at a single time. Also called a one-pour system.
Statically determinate structures are structures in which the reaction forces and the internal forces can be calculated by the 3
Equilibrium equations.
Statically Indeterminate Structures are structures in which the reaction forces and the internal forces CAN NOT be calculated by the 3
Equilibrium equations.
Dead Load - Classification of a load which is permanently attached to a structure.
Moment Arm - The force measured from a loading at a distance from the axis of rotation.
Continuous Beam - Type of beam supported by row of columns.
