William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upin-Avon, a quiet market town on April 23,1564.

Stratford is about 100 miles outside of London

He was baptized at Holy trinity Church on April 26,1564

He was the third of eight children born to Mary Arden and John Shakespeare, but he was the first of
their children to survive past infancy.

Three of the children died in there youth.

The stratford of William Shakespeare’s childhood was a peaceful town surrounded by farms, woods,
fields, and the flow of the river Avon.

William attended his first professional theater performance at the age of eleven

All of these performances had an impact on the early development of William’s dramatic and poetic
interests

Shakespeare was removed from school to serve in his father’s glove making business at the age of 15

He did not go to auniversity, but he read what books he could get hold of in his spare time.

He is the most influential writer in the world, but he left us no journals or letters, however, he left us only
his poems and his plays.

He had an ability to capture the interest and imaginations of playgoers of that time

He became an actor and playwright in 1592

Shakespeare’s plays had a darling mixture of violence and romance, and his words brought his audiences
straight into the heart of each and every character.

As a playwright, he made little money for the writing he did. And he even made less money for his acting

He became part owner of London’s Globe theater, which became the home of The Lord Chamberlain’s
Men.

At the age of 46, Shakespeare moved back to stratford as a wealthy gentleman

In 1613, Globe Theater burned down, indication Shakespeare’s retirement from theater

Shakespeare entertained Ben Jonson and the poet Michael Brayton one night in 1616, soon after that
night he felt ill

He died on his birthday April 26 at the age of 52, and was buried two days later inside the chancel of the
Holy Trinity Church in Stratford

Shakespeare had produced nearly 40 plays and more than 150 sonnets. He had earned a good
reputation as a poet of the people

Ben Jonson said about him that “He was not of an age, but for all time”
John Dryden rated Shakespeare saying “I love Shakespeare”

Anne and William had two other children aside from susanna, twins Judith and Hamnet.

At the age of Eleven Hamnet passed away

Shakespeare was very distraught by the death of his son and paid tribute to him in the play Hamlet

Shakespeare is known for his invention of the Shakespearean sonnet, this sonnets are 14 lines long,
written in lambic pentameter (10 syllables per line)

He wrote 154 shakespearean Sonnets

He also wrote poetry that didn’t follow the Shakespearean sonnet format however he is most famous for
the Shakespearean sonnet.

Shakespeare wrote three main types of plays (comedies, histories, tragedies)

He began his career with comedies and ended with the tragedies

Shakespeare’s comedy generally involves some sort of romantic folly where there are mismatched
romantic pairings

One trait of his comedy is that nobody will die

The dark side of his comedy is characters will often go through a dramatic series of events

Shakespeare’s tragedy involves a main character who is a prominent figure in his or her society, there is
always a flaw of his that he or she doesn’t realize

The main character will always fall from power

The main character will always die

Shakespeare’s History are both a comment on previous rulers as well as current rulers

He would often point out what he thought was wrong with the government in his plays

Because he was sponsored by the king he needed to hide this fact, which he did by writing about
fictional or past rulers

He wrote 13 comedies

He wrote 10 histories

He wrote 15 tragedies

As he got older his writing became darker and darjer, thus he ended his career writing tragedies

Soliloquy is anytime where a character is alone on stage and talking to the audience, he will break the
fourth wall and tell the audience what he or she is thinking

Aside is similar to soliloquy but the character is not alone, the wall is broken again but only audience
knows what is going on
Shakespeare became the official playwright of the king. His performance group was originally lord
chamberlain’s men and later became the king’s men

The Globe theatre is shakespeare’s theatre was built outside London, theatre was performed here due to
the Puritans

The original globe burned down during his time

During a performance of henry the VIII in 1613 an errant cannon shot caught the roof on fire

A second globe was built less than 60 miles from the site of the original Globe in 1614

The second globe also burned down after Shakespeare’s death

The third globe was built in 1997 at the site of the original gglobe

Shakespeare did not write down any of his plays, actors memorized the lines as they performed the plays

After he died, the king’s mean recorded all of his plays on paper to pay tribute

Romeo and Juliet – one of his most famous tragedies.

“Oh Romeo, Romeo where are you Romeo?!”
