WHAT IS A CV?
A Curriculum Vitae, more popularly known as a CV, is a brief account of a person’s
experience, education, qualifications and previous occupations.
WHERE DO I START?
Discovering my transferable key skills!
Discovering the skills you already have that could add value to an employer is a vital part
of writing your CV. Deciding what you have to offer and presenting that in a clear and
concise way helps the reader see why you would be a good fit for that role and their
business.
The CAR technique is an effective way to demonstrate how you apply your skills and
knowledge to a range of experiences including employment, volunteering, academic
work and extra-curricular activities. When answering questions, always ensure you give
a concrete example to back up your claim. Use the following technique to guide you
when answering. CAR can be used at every stage of your recruitment stage: CV, Cover
Letter and Interviews.
Spend time reading and dissecting the job description as the clues to what the employer is looking for
are there. Take notes and highlight each of the skills required for the job, how can you show you have
the relevant skills required? Don’t worry if that proof is in a different sector, it’s the skill you want to
show off. For example: delivering results to targets and deadlines, delivering excellent customer service,
etc. Try to incorporate keywords from the job description and how the company describes themselves,
such as ‘dynamic, solution orientated’. Remember skills can come out of the most unlikely places, so
really think about what you've done to grow your own skills.
Do your research on the employer and the skills needed for the job. Many candidates make
assumptions about what is important to the employer rather than finding out and as a result the
information on their CV isn’t relevant to the employer and they are not invited to interview. SHOW that
you have the specific skills required using CAR to talk about your experience. The first half of the page is
the ‘CV hotspot’. This is where the recruiter's eye will naturally fall, so make sure you include your most
important information there to keep them reading to the end.
Avoid making your CV generic, it is important to tailor your CV to each application. Use the job
description and your research on the role to ensure that you are giving the most relevant information.
Remember to tailor the profile portion of your CV for every role applied for and make it relevant for that
role. Employers receive hundreds of CVs each week, the easier you make it for them to see that you are
a good match the greater the chance of an interview - make sure that you give the file your name,
‘CV.doc’ can get very easily lost!
Lay out your CV clearly and simply with no tables, frames or borders. Your CV will likely be read by a
machine as well as a person so formatting options like columns, shading, boxes and so on may look nice
but they can be scrambled by databases. Include relevant key words so that recruiters can find you in
databases, they use these to search for particular skills and qualifications.
Grammatical and spelling errors must be completely avoided - CVs with errors are often rejected on that
basis alone. Tips for how to avoid making these errors are to get others to proof read your CV and read
it out loud to yourself to make sure you’re reading what you’ve written, not what you think is there.
Once your CV is completed re-read it yourself on a new day as this will help in spotting any missed
errors. Keep your CV updated. It is important to review your CV on a regular basis and add any new
skills or experience. A good technique is to constantly revisit and refine your CV whenever you feel you
have gained a new skill as it’s all about refining what you say and how you say it in the most concise
way. Save your CV file as ‘First Name Last Name_CV’ - don’t save as 'cv_version_30.doc' as employers will
see the file name. Don’t use small font size such as 8. Use a simple font like Arial or Times New Roman,
10-12pt, and keep formatting like italics and underlining to a minimum.
