The fibers are to be plant added by LafargeHolcim with its typical dose at the central
mixer during the concrete batching process.
For more details please refer to Annex I.
5.7. Accessories
5.7.1. Surface Retarder (Deactivator)
Horizontal Flat surface: For the Artevia Exposed the surface retarder enables to delay
the hydration of cement on the exposed surfaces of concrete. After cleaning the
treated surface, the aggregate in the concrete gets exposed.
LafargeHolcim’s micro etch surface retarder shall be applied when the initial setting
of concrete is in process and not hardened
A thumb impression should not appear on the concrete surface and should be
frequently checked until thumb impression is not visible.
Vertical Surface: Micro retarder should be applied to the shutter 3-4 hours prior to
concrete been casted.
Washing Recommendations:
1) For micro Artevia Exposed surfaces, washing should be delayed until next day,
for minimum 20-24 hours.
2) Start from the corner of the panel with the sprayer angle placed at 45 degree
and distance up to 50 cm away from the surface. The pressure bar should not be
more than 140 bars.
All above recommendations should first be tried on few samples replicatingthe
original placed concrete at every pour.
These recommendations are subject to site and climatic conditions besides
ambient temperature which may affect the final Artevia Exposed concrete finish.

DATA SHEET CONCRETE
Decorative concrete –
Guidelines for curing
and sealing
Making the choice of decorative concrete is judicious but also an investment. Like any
finished surface, concrete needs to be protected and maintained to preserve its beauty
from day one to years into the future!
Proper curing and sealing are the most important and often the most neglected aspects
of quality decorative concrete construction. When properly protected and cared for,
integral color concrete will retain its color indefinitely. Decorative concrete demands slight
differences in placement and curing compared to standard concrete. These differences
are no more difficult, just slightly different to ensure the desired finish and appearance.
Curing
What is it? Why cure?
Curing is the surface treatment of the newly placed concrete during the period in which
it is hardening so that it retains enough moisture to assist the chemical reaction called
hydration.
The fresh concrete contains enough water to allow the cement to hydrate and to allow
the concrete to be placed easily. However, if the excess water evaporates too quickly
on the surface because the concrete is not protected against evaporation, the hydration
process can be delayed or even prevented resulting in a poor finish.
Curing has a major impact on the quality of the finished work. The proper hydration of
the cement on the surface will give the concrete what it needs to gain strength properly,
to minimize shrinkage and cracking, and to have the durability required to resist scaling
caused by deicing salts. In fact, curing is so essential to installing decorative concrete
correctly because the result of water evaporation is more noticeable on colored concrete
surfaces than traditional concrete making decorative surfaces look faded or lighter in color
when not cleaned off. Properly cured decorative concrete is stronger, more durable and
more water tight.

Clear curing is the most common and also recommended on projects
that incorporate multiple colors. White pigmented compounds are
recommended for use on hot, sunny days because their reflective

The most common and practical way to cure colored concrete is to
use liquid curing compounds. These compounds are available in clear,
white-pigmented or color-matched finish.

vibrant color and to refresh the general appearance and cleanliness
www.artevia-us.com
What maintenance is required of decorative concrete?
Because the life expectancy of a sealer depends, in part, on exposure conditions and
how well the sealer is maintained, it’s important to select a sealer that will protect your
decorative concrete from the traffic conditions and elements to which it will be exposed.
Proper maintenance includes reapplying the sealer on a regular basis depending on how
the concrete is used. A home patio or pool deck might require another coat every two years
while a more heavily traveled surface might require a new coat of sealer more often. Exterior
surfaces need to be power-washed and interior floors need to be cleaned prior to resealing
the surface. Again, the sealer needs to be applied on a clean, dry concrete with a surface
temperature of no less than 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Once the concrete is clean and dry, the
sealer can be spayed or rolled on the surface concrete. If a pump sprayer is used, it must
be designed for this kind of product. Ordinary garden-type sprayers are not recommended.
Exterior and interior concrete surfaces may receive several thin coats of sealer.
Compatibility
To avoid incompatibility problems, we suggest using the same product used initially; if a
cure and seal was first applied, a product by the same manufacturer is recommended.

As stated in ACI 360R, every effort should be made to isolate the slab from
restraint that might be provided by any other element of the structure.
Restraint from any source, whether internal or external, will increase the
potential for random cracking.
Three types of Artevia joints are commonly used in concrete slabs on-
ground: isolation joints, contraction joints, and construction joints (Please
refer to figure 1).
