ABSTRACT

Rice water is the water used for cleaning and washing rice grains, it is composed of NPK or

Nitrogen for leaf growth, Phosphorus for inhibiting root seed, and Potassium for shoot length and

strengthening, these components are the vital ingredients that makes up the fertilizer. According to

Cj Sedlacek, (Is too much fertilizer a problem, 2020) Fertilizers provide crops with nutrients like

potassium, phosphorus, and nitrogen, which allow crops to grow bigger, faster. The purpose of this

study is to find a fertilizer that is feasible, credible, budget friendly and less usage of synthetic

fertilizer. The Researchers used a True Experimental Design. To test if there's a significant

difference in using a different rice as fertilizer, The researchers made a 2 groups named as Group A

with the application of Jasmine Rice Water and Group B with the application of Dinorado Rice

Water. The result of the experiment shows that when it comes to shoot length the Group B with

the application of Dinorado Rice water has a higher average result than in the Group A while in

terms of Overall Root length the Group A with the application of Jasmine Rice water has a higher

average than the Group B

Introduction

Background of the Study

In the midst of pandemic where people are quarantined on their homes, Gardening gives enjoyment
for those people who suffered from anxiety, depression and stress they have chosen gardening as their
coping mechanism. Engagement in Gardening can help in various ways. It improves environment, enhances
people’s mental health and provides food for daily needs. According to Hall (2020) Interacting with nature,
especially with the presence of water, can increase self-esteem and mood, reduce anger, and improve
general psychological well-being with positive effects on emotions or behavior. Lowering stress-hormones
and providing us with a sense of reward, are just two of the ways gardening can be good for our mental well-
being. Middleton (2018) said that Gardening is a form of exercise that can be good for you as it helps to
release endorphins, the hormone that helps to make people feel satisfied and relaxed. Many people use
synthetic fertilizer on their plant and some people use organic fertilizer like rice water,

As Mentioned by Ricepedia (2013), Rice is the most important food crop of the developing world and
the staple food of more than half of the world’s population. Rich in nutrients and vitamins and minerals, it an
excellent source of complex carbohydrates. It is considered the ultimate staple in Filipino food because it is
present in every household and is more than likely part of every Filipino's meal. According to the D.A.
Communications Group (2020), the PSA reported that on average, a Filipino consumes a total of 118.81
kilograms (kg) annually. On an Average day, Filipinos use 2-3 Liters of water per day to cook rice but they
tend to throw it away because they don’t have knowledge about the important substances that is present in
the rice water. Rice Water can also use in different ways, like, it is good for your health and for your skin.
But, why does people use rice water on their plants. Rice water also contains valuable nutrients for
houseplants. Using it is also a wonderful way to conserve water and a great way to take some of the worry
out of over-fertilizing (John, 2016). The starches from leftover rice water will help encourage beneficial soil
bacteria call Lacto Bacilli that can help feed the good fungi like mycorrhizae. Which in turn feeds the plants
roots, making it grow

stronger, healthier and more resistant to diseases. This waste water can also be used as organic fertilizer
that can improve soil fertility, increase plant growth And production and contain

compounds or elements that can be used as a source of nutrients for Microbes. According to Mateescu
(2017) rice wash is rich in basic nutrients for plant growth such as N, P, K but in the same time it is rich in
sugars, mainly amidon but also other carbohydrates.

Vigna Radiata (Monggo Beans), One of the most widely-grown plant in the Philippines, and also the
commonly used plant for experiment is Vigna Radiata. They are small in size, ovoid in shape, and green in
color popularly known worldwide as monggo bean, or simply monggo. It is an excellent crop for green
manuring, because it matures early, grows fast and produces abundant vegetative tops. Adequate site
selection and soil preparation, timing to maximize temperature, rainfall and other considerations help to
ensure bean plant growth and productivity (Ryczkowski, 2018). In order for the monggo seeds to grow, they
will need to be exact amount of exposure to sunlight, sufficient amount of water, plenty of nutrients

from the soil, and air. Mung beans are a good choice for this experiment because they are small seeds and
can grow in compact places. For variations of the soil experiment, use different amounts of water, sunlight
and fertilizer to observe how these factors affect plant growth.

Rationale

This study was conducted to help people who wants to learn, try, and loves gardening. The study
that is being conveyed by the researchers are convenient, feasible and safe for everyone. New knowledges
can be found in this paper that can help you in Gardening. The purpose of fertilizer is to supplement
essential nutrients in the soil needed by all plants for healthy, vigorous growth. Contrary to popular belief,
fertilizers are not plant food. Plants manufacture their own food from water and carbon dioxide through
photosynthesis. Fertilizers instead provide the nutrients plants need to grow, Without fertilizers, nature
struggles to replenish the nutrients in the soil. When crops are harvested, important nutrients are removed
from the soil, because they follow the crop.

To grow strong, healthy, and verdant plants, good nourishment and environment is a need. Water,
air, light, soil nutrients, and the correct temperature for the right plants are the most basic factors to make a
plant grow faster and bigger. Unlike chemically processed fertilizers, rice water is a natural fertilizer. Making
rice water as an alternative fertilizer can save you money from buying the commercial fertilizers.

As stated by Rice Water Project (2011), Rice water is a kind of naturally occurred fertilizer and it
doesn’t undergo chemical process. This can help to reduce the use of electric current and material of
industry. Also, rice water can act as natural fertilizer to promote plant growth and replace chemically made
fertilizer to save the environment.

Research Questions

This study determined and compare the effect of rice water to the growth of Vigna Radiata ( Monggo Plant ).
Furthermore, it addressed the following questions:

1. Does the rice water can be an alternative fertilizer for the Vigna Radiata ( Monggo )

2. Does the rice water influence the growth of the plant in terms of:
A. Length of the roots
B. Height of the plant
C. Leaf production
3. Is there a significant difference between using jasmine rice water and Dinorado rice water to the
growth of the Vigna Radiata ( Monggo )

Hypothesis

H0: There is no significant difference upon applying fertilizer made out of Jasmine rice water to the
growth of Vigna Radiata (Monggo) than that with a Dinorado rice water

Assumption

The researchers assumed that all of the mung beans is the same type. When planting the mung
beans, the researchers used the same type of soil for two groups, researchers expects that the two groups
will have a fair and non-bias results. Also, Since the rainy season is coming, the researchers assumed that the
Plants will not have sufficient sunlight due to the unpredictable weather.

Scope and Delimitations of the Study

This study seeks to assess if the application of rice water will have a significant difference in the
growth of Vigna Radiata (Monggo) seed, thus, the entirety of the study comprises of mere experimentation
about the effectiveness of utilizing it so, it will focus on evaluating the plant growth, specifically, it’s shoot
length, production of the leaf, length of the roots, and the height of the plant. As stated by Peters C. (2020)
You can tell if the plant is healthy by looking at the stems, the roots, and the entire look of the plants. The
researchers used standard soils in order to have an accurate measurement of the data, different variety of
soils might tell different data because the sample aren’t in the same environment. The experiment was done
in the researchers home.

Preparation and Assembling

In preparing the monggo beans, The Monggo beans are soaked in the bowl of full of water in 8-12
Hours depending on how long the monggo beans sprout. The researchers used a 4:5 ratio, for every 4 cups
of Jasmine Rice, The researchers pour 5 cups of water in it and then, the researchers proceed washing the
rice, The milled rice needs to be rinse thoroughly in 1 minute so that the starch and nutrients from the rice
will transfer in the water. After that, drain the washed milled rice using strainer to collect the rice water that
is needed for the experiment.

Preparation of Planting for Vigna Radiata ( Monggo Beans )

The researches will take out the monggo seeds that is soak in the bowl full of water and put it
into the seedling tray. The researchers need an exact amount of 30 grams (g) of soil per pot. To have an
exact and precise measurement, The researchers used a Digital Weighing Scale to measure the soil. This soil
are put into a 59cm x 27cm seedling tray with 72 seedling pot. Each pot is consist of Three (3) Monggo
Beans inside. In measuring the rice water that served as an alternative fertilizer, The researchers used a
syringe without the needle and researchers get an exact amount of 10 milliliters (ml) of rice water to use as
an alternative fertilizer to the plants. Using syringe, it will give an exact and precise measurement.
Testing
In group A, The researchers applied rice water from Jasmine Rice. While in group B, the Researchers
applied rice water from the Dinorado rice and will measure the different group to know if there's a

Implications of the Study

The results implies that the used of rice water for watering plants can help in the prevention of
water wastage. In this way, the rice water’s used are maximized. Moreover, it contains trace amounts of
nitrogen for leaf growth, phosphorous for inhibiting root, seed, fruits, and flowers growth, and potassium for
inhibiting overall growth and stem strengthening. In a way, rice water does not just promote saving water by
using it in a productive and helpful manner, it also promotes the healthy development and growth of plants
acting as a natural fertilizer eliminating the need for synthetic fertilizers that are not just expensive but also a
harmful substance.

Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on evaluating the plant growth of the monggo plant specifically, it’s shoot length,
production of the leaf, length of the roots, and the height of the plant. Because there is no open laboratory
and the open laboratories are far away, the researchers use a dichotomous key to assess if the monggo
beans are the same type. The researchers used a same type of soil in both groups to have a fair and non-bias
result because different varieties of soil might tell different data Because the sample is not in the same
environment. This experimentation we’re done in one of the researchers home.

Future Studies
The reported findings by the study will help in giving further knowledge that may help improve the
understanding on ways we can used rice water that will both benefit the user and the environment. It can
also be a relevant for the future researchers to base upon, it can also be use as a future reference as related
studies to the research of future researchers. The Dinorado and Jasmine rice water showed effectiveness in
monggo plants that they may lead to studies that centered in plant fertilizer, it may be use as an organic
fertilizer that are both beneficial for the environment and the people who are going to use it as a
replacement for synthetic fertilizer
