(Water and Water Resources)

• Water is one of the important ingredients in the different biological processes.
Absence of this will interfere reactions necessary for life.
• Water exists in the form of liquid, vapor or ice. Liquid water exists in the form of
oceans, lakes, and rivers. Water vapor is most visible as clouds and frogs. The ice
form of water is found in glaciers, ice caps, and icebergs.
• Water Resources are natural resources of water that are potentially useful for
humans.
• The estimated volume of water in the liquid state is 1.36 billion cubic centimeter
(cc).
• One of the functions of water is to help regulate the planet's temperature and
climate.
• Planet Earth has been called the “Blue Planet” due to the abundant water on its
surface.
(Various Water Resources on Earth)
• River is a natural flowing watercourse, usually a freshwater stream.
• Groundwater is the water present beneath Earth’s surface in rock and soil pore
spaces and in the fractures of rock formations.
• Estuary is an area where a freshwater river or stream meets the ocean.
• Pond is a small, still, land-based body of water formed by pooling inside a
depression.
• Ocean is a huge body of saltwater that covers about 71% of Earth’s surface.
• Wetland is a place in which the land is covered by water.
• Lake is a naturally occurring, relatively large body of water localized in a basin
surrounded by dry land.
• Glacier is a large, perennial accumulation of crystalline ice, snow, rock,
sediment, and often liquid water
Here are several activities that affect our waters:
1. Farming
2. Industrial production
3. Excessive water withdrawal
WHAT IS WATER SCARCITY?
-Water scarcity (closely related to water stress or water crisis) is the lack of fresh
water resources to meet the standard water demand.
-Water scarcity can be caused primarily by human activities which promote
sedimentation, pollution, climate change, deforestation, landscape changes,
and urban growth.
Eutrophication is the process in which a water body becomes overly enriched
with nutrients, leading to the plentiful growth of simple plant life.
Ways of Conserving and Protecting Water Resources.
• Use less water
• Keep harmful substances out of the water.
• Keep pipes and appliances in good condition.
• Use water – efficient appliances
• Use water efficiently outdoors.
• Drive less.
(Distribution of Water in Earth’s Surface)
Earth has reservoirs of water. These are oceans, glaciers, groundwater, lakes,
rivers, and the atmosphere. 97% of Earth’s water is in the ocean and 3% is
freshwater. Freshwater is found on ice, polar ice caps, glacier (77%), groundwater
(22%), and 1% are other sources. The other sources are composed of lakes and
rivers (61%) and the atmosphere (39%).
The amount of water on Earth is about the same now as it was 65 to 220 million
years ago.
6 Places Where Water is Found
1. Surface water
2. Reservoir
3. Frozen water
4. Glacier
5. Groundwater
6. Water table
What is Water Cycle?
Water cycle, also known as the hydrologic cycle or hydrological cycle, is a
biogeochemical cycle that describes the continuous movement of water on,
above and below the surface of the Earth.
Vesta – the second largest object in Asteroid Belt.
Earth’s water comes from both the extraterrestrial formation, called the solar
nebula.
The human body is made up of 60% of water.

2 Types of Irrigation
• Overhead sprinkle irrigation – method of watering plants or crops where
water is sprayed over the area from above, much like rain.
• Trench or drip irrigation – a way to water plants by delivering small
amounts of water directly to their roots.
Important of Water Supply
• Maintain health
• Grow food
• Manage the environment
• Create jobs
Ways to Use Water Wisely
• Reducing water consumption
• Reusing water
• Recycling water
