INTRODUCTION

In many urban public high schools today, students navigate their day by selectively cutting class leading

to course failure and dropping out. Collaborative, qualitative research conducted with urban high school

students indicates that cutting results from disengagement and alienation that students label

“boredom.” Focus group data (N= 160 in 8 groups) indicate that class cutting has not only an individual

component that schools address, but also a systemic, conflictual component that schools do not

address. These unaddressed, intransigent conflicts can foster moral exclusion and structural violence.

These data suggest that rather than relying on standard punitive approaches, schools can respond to

class cutting more effectively by taking students' concerns seriously, working collaboratively with

students, and engaging in institutional self-scrutiny (Fallis & Opotow, 2003).

In a survey on attitudes toward skipping class given to 75 undergraduates at a prominent state

university in the Midwest, 84% of 38 respondents answered that they have been or may be inclined to

skip a class because of reasons associated with "health": they are tired or just not feeling well. All

women (n=20) chose this option, while only 67% of the men did. Beyond gender lines, college year also

influenced answers: While 50% of juniors and seniors chose "weather" as a reason to skip class, only

20% of first-year students and sophomores did so (Gump, 2004).

1
OVERVIEW OF THE SITUATION

The SSG President Sanny Boy Talontong concern about the problem of the school in terms of cutting of

classes of some students in Edna Guillermo Memorial National High School which affects their academic

performances. These problem more concern on boys compare to girls, 30 % of the male students doing

cutting of classes and 15 % of the female students.

He notice some students having lack of interest in entering the school, while some are because of

financial problem and most common reason are others are being influenced with the gang or their

friends. Mr. Talontong saw while the class session occurs, some of the male students hangout outside

the campus; smoking cigarettes and vape and talking with their friends.

ANSWER;

I. Problem

There school should conduct an investigation or teachers should observed the students since they

having lack of interest in entering the school in order to address the present concern of the institution.

II. Objective

Identify the problem of the school between the students, the problem of the students between teachers

and the students themselves.

III. Areas of Consideration

a. 5 alternative actions school should took

1. The SSG President with his moderator should conduct a serious conference with the teachers

including the school head.

- These conference one of the best way to address the present concern. Since the SSG President himself

witnessed some of the male students cut their class session by hanging out outside the school . He will

voice out that concern, so finding the solution will be not harder anymore.

2. The school should have a concrete wall, entrance and exit gate.

- Cutting of classes are easy to do for some students because the school are widely open. Building

concrete wall will be more effective to prevent the cutting of classes of some students because they will

find difficulties to escape from the campus.

3. Implementing Sports Club.

- Since the issue concerning more on the male students hanging out outside the campus, smoking and

talking nonsense with their friends. The school should build more sports facilities or area in order to

encourage student to play sports rather than doing their vices. This will also helpful to lessen the issue of

the cutting of classes because the student will have their interest to enter the school to be able to play

the game they wanted to to perform instead of hanging out outside the campus.

4. SSG Officers/School and the School Guard should imposed more restrictions for good.
-School Guard should not allow student to go outside for no valid reason and with out the permission

from his/her teacher during the class session. This will also help to lessen the issue.

5. SSG Officers and the School should call a meeting with the parents of the students regarding their

behavior.

- An individuals behavior firstly got from thier home and not inside the school. So this kind of students

behavior should address to their parents because we do not know, they might have personal problems

in their home. With that, parents can share to the school the main reason why thier child doing that kind

of behavior so teachers will understand the child and make some plan how to support them and address

their problem.

IV. Recommendation/s

a. Recommend only one solution to the problem

In the students’ view, attendance is not as important. According to Romer (1993), “usually about one-

third of students are not in class” (p. 167). Clay and Breslow (2006) have mentioned multiple reasons for

this, such as expectations for learning from the lecture, difficulty of the subject, relation to problem sets

and tests, and interest. Not all students are the same, however, and reasons may vary for each one. The

education curriculum should implement new order regards to increasing a grading percentage of

students attendance.
