• Throughout the expedition, there served a
translator named Enrique
• Enrique was from Sumatra (present day
Indonesia) and was a slave of Ferdinand
Magellan
• August 10, 1519 (St. Lawrence’s Day) – They
leave the harbour of Seville, Spain.

• The captains of other four ships plotted a
mutiny against Magellan.

• October 21, 1520 – discovered a strait. Upon entering they
found two openings.

• They ate biscuit and putrid water.
Worst of all misfortunes:
• Gums of both lower and upper teeth
swelled.
• 25-30 men fell sick and 19 men died.

• The Capt. General told the interpreter that he
wants to be casi-casi with the king.

• The first mass in the Philippines was held in
Mazaua (Limasawa)
• It was attended by Magellan, Raja Colambu
(Rajah Kolambu), Raja Siaui (Rajah Siagu),
Spanish voyagers, and the local islanders
• It was presided by Father Pedro de Valderama.

• REPUBLIC ACT No. 2733
An Act to Declare the Site in Magallanes, Limasawa Island in the
Province of Leyte, Where the First Mass in the Philippines was Held as a
National Shrine, to Provide for the Preservation of Historical Monuments and
Landmarks Thereat, and for Other Purposes
• Section 1. The site in Magallanes, Limasawa Island in the Province of Leyte,
where the first Mass in the Philippines was held is hereby declared a national
shrine to commemorate the birth of Christianity in the Philippines.
• Section 5. This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
• Approved: June 19, 1960.

RESOLUTION:
• Resolution No. 2, s. 2020 - The Board of Commissioners of the
National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) signed on
15 July 2020 this resolution about the first mass in Limasawa

Nakaabot ang ekspedisyon ni Magellan sa
Zubu (Cebu). Doon, sinabihan ni Humabon si
Magellan na kailangan nitong magbayad ng
tributo sa kaniya. Gayunman, tinanggihan
ito ni Magellan at sa halip ay inalok niya
si Humabon ng proteksyon at pagkakaibigan
sa ngalan ng hari ng espanya.
• A mass was held with Raia Humabon and his people
attending the ceremony
• 800 souls were baptized
• Pigafetta showed the queen an image of our Lady, a
very beautiful wooden child Jesus, and a cross.
• She asked for the little child Jesus to keep in
place of her idols and this image of child Jesus is
now known as the Sto. Niño found in Cebu.
• 49 leaped into the water while 11 stayed in the
boats to guard it.
• Around 1500 natives were waiting for them in the
shore.
• They begin to fight each other.
• Magellan shouted “ceased firing” but he wasn’t
heard.
• They shot the right leg of Magellan with poisoned
arrow.
• He ordered to retire slowly but others took
flight, only 8-6 stayed with him.
• The natives saw Magellan wounded and hurled
upon him.
• “They killed our mirror, light, comfort and
our true guide.”

• Dahil sa paghahalay na ginawa ng mga Espanyol sa
kababaihan ng sugbuhanon at kabilang sa napatay
si DUARTE BARBOSA na kapitang ng VICTORIA.
• May 1, 1521 (Wednesday) – 25 Spaniards were
massacred by the Zubuanos thus forcing the
remaining Spaniards to depart Zubu immediately.
• Conception is abandoned (burned it).
• 110 men were still alive
• June 21, 1521 – Under the command of Juan
Sebastian Elcano, Victoria and Trinidad departed
to Palawan.
• Nov. 6, 1521 – Victoria and Trinidad arrived in
Moluccas.
• Dec. 18, 1521 – Victoria and Trinidad lift anchor
to depart but Trinidad springs a leak.
• Dec. 21, 1521 – Victoria set sail for a 9
month long return voyage via the Cape of
Good Hope.
• Sept. 6, 1522 – entered the bay of San
Luchar.
• Sept. 8, 1522 – Seville, Spain
• Sept. 9, 1522 – St. Mary of Victory.
