CHAPTER 1

Introduction

Background of the Study

During 2020, the pandemic came and brought changes in many perspectives

of our lives including our education and academic life. While the COVID-19 pandemic

sent educational institutions scrambling to move classes online, many forget that

there are other modes for distance learning. Online learning is not the only type of

distance learning. However, the most popular mode of distance learning under

consideration is modular learning. To make sure that learning remains unhampered,

DepEd implemented a distance learning approach, a learning delivery mode where

interaction takes place between the teacher and the students who are

geographically remote from each other during instruction. This means lessons will be

delivered outside the traditional face-to-face setup. The modules include sections on

motivation and assessment that serve as a complete guide of both teachers’ and

students’ desired competencies. Teachers will monitor the learners’ progress

through home visits (following social distancing protocols) and feedback

mechanisms, and guide those who need special attention (Llanes, 2020).

Additionally, Barnett et al (2004), defined module as a unit of work in a

course of instruction that is virtually self-contained and a method of teaching that is

based on the concept of building up skills and knowledge in discrete.

Moreover, Varieties of teaching methods that will fixate on cumulating

methods that can best realize the creative and constructive engagement with

learning activities that leads to understanding. Even very good designed modules,

with very well defined learning outcomes, can fail if the edification strategies

employed are infelicitous to inspirit and support the learners towards meeting the

desired learning outcomes (Khan, 2011).

Kandarp Sejpal (2013) offers the following definition: “A teaching strategy is a

plan for learning, and it includes the presentations which the teacher might make,

the exercises and learning activities designed for students, av-aids which will be

supplied or suggested for students to work with, in which they show of their growing

understanding and capability will be collected.” Modular teaching is one of the most

widespread and recognizes teaching learning techniques in many countries including

other Western countries and Asian region. Modular approach is used almost in all

subjects like natural science, specifically in biology and medical education and even

in social sciences as well as in computers education. It considering the individual

differences among the learners which necessitate the planning for adoption of the

most appropriate teaching techniques in order to help the individual grow and

develop at her/his own pace.

Finally, this study has substantial effects to impart on the people’s existing

knowledge especially the students of our country about effectiveness of modular

distance learning among grade senior highschool students.

Statement of the Problem

This study aimed to determine the level of effectiveness of Modular Distance

Learning among the Senior High school Students of Immaculate Conception School

of Guiuan. Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions:

1. What is the profile of the respondent in terms of the following:

1.1.1 Age

1.1.2 Sex

1.1.3 Specialization

2. What level of effectiveness of learning modality of the senior high school students

in ICS?

3. What is the academic achievement of the senior highschool students in ICS?

4. Is there a significant relationship of learning modality and academic achievement

of the senior highschool students in ICS?

Hypothesis

Based on the statement of the problem, the following hypotheses was considered on

this study:

There is a high level of effectiveness of learning modality and the academic

achievements of the senior high school students on ICS.

Scope and Delimitation

This study focused on the level of effectiveness of learning modality

and the academic achievement of senior high school students of Immaculate

Conception School, Guiuan, Eastern Samar school year 2020-2021. Senior

high school students of Immaculate Conception School of Guiuan was

identified as the respondents of the study for the researchers to easily access

and gather data.

This study employed descriptive-correlational research design to

determine if level of effectiveness of learning modality are significantly

correlated to the academic achievement of the respondents. Furthermore, the

researchers utilized survey questionnaire adapted and modified from the

study Factors Affecting Mathematics Performance of Laboratory High School

Students at Laguna Polytechnic University Academic Year 2009-2010. The

data was tabulated and analyzed through the use of different statistical

analysis such as Weighted Mean and Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation

Coefficient or also known as Pearson’s r.

Significance of the Study

Many important sectors found worth from the results of this work.

To the Teachers. This study would give the teachers an avenue to reassess

the students’ academic achievement regarding the level of effectiveness of

learning modality.
To the Students. This study would provide an opportunity for the students to

understand the level of effectiveness of learning modality to their academic

achievement.

To the School. This study would be served as an instrument for the school

on how they would be able to uplift the students’ academic achievement

despite of the level of the high level of effectiveness in of learning modality.

To the Future Researchers. This study would help all the future researchers

get some information in case they conduct the same research. This would

also serve as a guide or reference for their study.

Definition of terms

This study delineated terminologies to achieved clarity of essential concepts

as applied in the study. The following terms are defined conceptually and

operationally.

Academic Achievement. This referred to performance outcomes in

intellectual domains taught at school; the most important prerequisite for

individual and societal prosperity (Steinmayr et. al., 2017). In this study,

academic achievement is defined depending on the indicators used to

measure it.

Learning Modality. The sensory channels or pathways through which

individuals give, receive, and store information. Perception, memory, and

sensation comprise the concept of modality (web.cortland.edu). In this study,

learning modality is the independent variable that specifically refers to

modular learning.
Level of Effectiveness. The degree to which something is effective

(Cambridge English Dictionary). In this study, level of effectiveness is an

indicator of correlating learning modality and the academic achievement of the

students.
