Beginning Bridge with 2 over 1 – Lesson 11: Overcalls

Chapters 16‐17, pages 105‐112 in student book

 Suit overcalls – compete for contract and lead directing
 NT overcalls – systems ON (Stayman and Transfers)

2 over 1 and 1NT Forcing are OFF in competition (opponents bidding).

In a competitive auction, ONLY conventional bids are forcing (Stayman, Opener

Transfers and Cue bids [Cue bids will be explained later]).

NAME THE SEAT Advancer Overcaller

Opener, Overcaller, Responder and Advancer. Responder

SUIT OVERCALLS
ANYONE THAT BIDS IN COMPETITION – ANY NEW suit requires a 5‐card suit (on player’s first suit bid – applies to
EVERYONE except Opener).

It should be a GOOD SUIT, i.e. have some HCP. It is also LEAD DIRECTING – you should be pleased when partner
leads the suit you bid if opponents end up with the contract.

In addition to a Good 5‐card suit:

 at the 1‐level (i.e., 1 [Opener] – 1 [Overcaller]) you need at least 9 HCP (fewer than an opening bid)
 at the 2‐level (i.e., 1[Opener] – 2[Overcaller]) you need at least 10 HCP

RESPONDER AND ADVANCER BIDDING REQUIREMENTS

Responder needs a 5‐card suit and at least 6 HCP to bid a new suit at the 1‐level (other than transfers) and at least
10 HCP to bid a new suit at the 2‐level. Both Responder and Advancer can show support for partner’s suit with
the same simple and limit raise HCP requirements.

NT OVERCALLS
1NT Overcalls (i.e. RHO bids 1 and you bid 1NT) have an additional requirement that 1NT opening bids do not
have: you are promising partner you have the suit the Opener bid stopped – preferably twice (i.e. your RHO bids
1 and you have the AQ of Hearts – in theory that is stopped twice).

All systems are ON when partner overcalls 1NT (all systems means Stayman and Transfers).

BIDDING OVER AN OPPONENT’S NT OPENING BID

You BETTER be CAREFUL. PAY ATTENTION to vulnerability. You need at LEAST an opening hand and a GOOD SUIT.

INTERFERENCE AFTER A NT BID

Regardless if your 1NT is an opening bid or an overcall, if an opponent bids after a NT bid W N E S
(or overcall) DOUBLING the opponent means (HEY, that was my bid too). Remember 1 1NT 2
when we said in the past that EVERY bid at the 2‐level was ARTIFICIAL (Stayman and X

Transfers). To avoid confusion, we teach systems ON over interference 1NT – 2

The double over 2 means WEST is
[Opponent] – 3 [Responder] is still Stayman. Whatever bid it takes to show what showing a 2 bid also – a Transfer to
you WERE going to bid still counts as that bid at the lowest possible bid to show Hearts and the 1NT bidder must
that. Just remember, STARTING with 3 is going to end up at 3NT if partner says announce “Transfer”.
3 – you would need to have 10+ HCP.
