Hooke's law states that the extension or compression of a spring is proportional to the load applied. Young's modulus is a measure of the stiffness of an object and is calculated by dividing the stress by the strain. 3. Ductile materials can undergo plastic deformation without fracturing, while brittle materials fracture with little plastic deformation.     water at the bottom of the ocean, given that the bulk modulus of water is 2.2 X 10 9 N m-2. (Take g= 10ms-2)
    12. Two wires made of same material are subjected to forces in the ratio 1 : 4. Their lengths are in the ratio
    2 : 1 and diameters in the ratio 1 : 3. What is the ratio of their extensions?

    16. A structural steel rod has a radius of 10 mm and a length of 1.0m. A 100kN force stretches along its length.
    Calculate (a) stress, (b) elongation, and (c) strain on the rod.
    (Young’s modulus of structural steel is 2.0 x 1011 N m-2)
    17. A copper wire of length 2.2 m and a steel wire of length 1.6m, both of diameter 3.0 mm, are connected
    end to end. When stretched by a load, the net elongation is found to be 0.7 mm. Obtain the load applied.
    18. What is meant Bulk Modulus? Write the expression for finding the Bulk modulus. What is the significance
    of negative sign in the expression for Bulk Modulus? How is it related to compressibility?
    19. Explain (i) ductile materials (ii) brittle materials and (iii) elastomers.
    20. What do you understand by potential energy in a stretched wire? Find a relation for it and hence determine
    the elastic potential energy per unit volume of the wire.
