The Stomach

1st slide
The stomach is a “J” shaped organ, located in the upper left quadrant. specialized for accumulation of ingested food, w/c
is chemically prepared for digestion.
It acts a food blender and reservoir, it’s gastric juices converts food into semiliquid mixture (chyme), before passing to
duodenum.
It can hold upto 2-3L of food.
2nd slide
 Now, the stomach is compose of 4 parts: CARDIA, FUNDUS, BODY, PYLORUS
CARDIA: contains the Cardial orifice ( superior inlet of the stomach).
It is located at the level of T11 vertebra
FUNDUS: Dilated superior part (dome). It may be dilated due to gas, fluid or food.
It lies posterior to the left 6th rib.
BODY: is the major part of stomach in between fundus and pyloric antrum.
PYLORUS: is a funnel shaped; the wide part is Pyloric antrum and the narrow part is pyloric canal.
It is the gatekeeper. ( controls discharge of stomach contents)
It contains the PYLORIC ORIFICE, inferior outlet of stomach.
Intermittent emptying of stomach occurs when intragastric pressure over comes resistance of pylorus.
It is located in the transpyloric plane.

 Now, the stomach has 2 curvatures: Lesser curvature and greater curvature.
LESSER CURVATURE: shorter concave right border of stomach.
GREATER CURVATURE: longer convex left border,
Curves form left 5th intercostal space to 9th / 10th cartilage then to pyloric antrum.
They form the J shaped due to unequal lengths.
 Now, inside the stomach we can see ridges of folds , these are called Rugae.
Mostly seen, in the pyloric part and along greater curvature.

3rd slide
Arterial supply of the stomach
>the arterial supply arises from Celiac trunk ( which is from the Abdominal Aorta).
Which bifurcates to left gastric and Splenic artery.
 Most blood is supplied by Right & Left Gastric Arteries, along the lesser curvature. And along greater curvature,
Right & Left Gastro-omental Arteries.
 While the Fundus receives blood from Short & Posterior gastric arteries.
4th slide
Venous Drainage
>The veins are parallel to the arteries.
> the Right & left gastric veins drain to Portal Vein.
> the Short gastric and left gastro omental vein drains to splenic vein.
> Right Gastro-omental vein drains in the Superior mesenteric artery.
> now. Prepyloric vein, which is important to identify pylorus ascends for right gastric vein the portal vein.

• Lymph from the superior two thirds of the stomach drains along the right and left gastric vessels to the gas- tric lymph nodes;
lymph from the fundus and superior part of the body of the stomach also drains along the short gastric arteries and left gastro-
omental vessels to the pan- creaticosplenic lymph nodes.
• Lymph from the right two thirds of the inferior third of the stomach drains along the right gastro-omental vessels to the pyloric
lymph nodes.
• Lymph from the left one third of the greater curvature drains to the pancreaticoduodenal lymph nodes, which are located along
the short gastric and splenic vessels.
