“A Good Life and Humor: Annotated Bibliography”

“Recognize the Power of Humor.” The Volunteer Management Report, vol. 24, no. 3, 2019, pp.

5–5, https://doi.org/10.1002/vmr.31121.

This article was a great read, as it highlights the powers of humor that I would never think

about. The writer who isn’t named writes about how humor can lighten up the mood in any

situation. When I’m stressed, I will now know that I should never be too serious, and to

joke about whatever I’m nervous about in order to lessen the stress of the whole situation.

I used to take situations very seriously, and would be suck up but now I know that you are

never too “cool” to laugh at the absurd. This will lead to my mood and the people around

me’s attitudes become more relaxed. It was interesting to read about how humor can relax

the mind, and make you forget about your problems for a second. Another thing that the

writer mentioned was how laughing and making jokes will attract other people to want to

be friends with you. Humor is contagious and will lead to people feeling more comfortable

around you. The powers that humor has gone unnoticed to most, but now I know that

laughter/humor is relaxing, stress relieving, and attractive to others. These powers will

obviously lead to a person living a happier life.

Lund, Daniel W. “Immigrant Adjustment: The Importance of Humor.” International Journal of

Diversity in Organisations, Communities and Nations, vol. 11, no. 3, 2012, pp. 169–182,

https://doi.org/10.18848/1447-9532/CGP/v11i03/39014.

This article was extremely interesting to me, since it explains how humor leads to

development throughout a person’s life. I learned that humor is used as an essential

adjustment, coping and defense mechanism, which makes a human’s well-being

somewhat dependent upon humor. The article goes on to explain the importance of

humor in a workplace, especially one with new workers from different cultures. The

article talks about a study showing that managers who use humor to get through

immigrant adjustment allows for a more positive vibe and attitude throughout the

workplace. These types of humor include host-country humor (which would be used by

the manager of the workplace), home-culture humor, and adopting host-country humor.

The study ended up showing that the policy-maker or manager can play a huge role in

ensuring that the barriers of immigrant adjustment are limited by the use of host-country

humor. I enjoyed learning about this study because I never thought about how humor

can play a huge role in ensuring the comfort of people in new workplaces, especially

immigrants, since the importance of a person’s everyday joblife is that influential to a

person’s happiness.
