Italian for beginners – A1

This course aims at giving basic aspects of Italian grammar and combines speaking,
writing, reading and listening skills for general purposes. It is orientated for academically
trained learners who are willing to learn (a) foreign language(s) and acquire basic
command of the Italian language.

Target group: all students, in priority students from “Bachelor en Cultures Européennes”
Teaching language: Italian (with recourse to French and/or English when needed)

ECTS: 3 ABSENCES: 3 max

Description
Italian language course for beginners. The objective is the acquisition of basic
grammatical rules and structures, as well as oral and written skills. Students are involved
in learning the basic grammar of Italian language as well as speaking, listening, writing
and reading by communicative activities in individual and/or pair and/or group work.

Learning outcomes
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
 learn and use the main grammatical structures of the Italian written and oral
system as well as of its basic linguistic functions
 greet people
 introduce, describe and provide personal information about themselves
 express themselves in a very simple way in everyday short conversation
 talk about their daily routine and leisure activities
 invite/ accept /refuse an invitation
 ask for information in different life contexts
 understand simple written texts and answer to simple questions about them et/or
briefly summarize them
 write a short and simple letter or text

Evaluation
 Oral interaction, level of interest and degree of involvement during the courses
 Speaking, listening, writing and reading skills shall be evaluated in task-based
activities (answering multiple choice questions; answering right/wrong questions
completing sentences)
 Speaking: daily routines, introducing oneself, meeting new people, short
dialogues
 Listening: key information from listening texts must be understood
(Advertisements, TV, etc.)
 Reading: acceptable pronunciation of a text or a dialogue and key information in
it must be detected
 Writing: basic “texts” or sequence of sentences should be summarized.

Students will be evaluated, in accordance to their active participation in the course, on


their regular homework (which first consists of grammar and/or vocabulary, translation
exercises/drills) and on their written test.
