PASSIVATION PROCEDURE

1.0 OBJECTIVE

To establish a Standard Operating Procedure for Passivation.

2.0 SCOPE

This shall be applicable for Passivation of Tank & Piping.

3.0 APLLICABLE CODES AND STANDARDS.

ASTM A 967- 01, Chemical Passivation Treatments for stainless steel parts.
ASTM A 380 – 99, Standard practice for Cleaning, Descaling, and Passivation of stainless steel
parts, equipment and systems.

4.0 RESPONSIBILITY

4.1 Executing : Devi Engineering.

4.2 Monitoring : Client

5.0 PROCEDURE

5.1 GENERAL
i. These specifications have to meet specific requirement for cleaning and passivating all
stainless steel or alloys containing more than 12% Cr.
ii. All welding flux and weld spatter to be removed by initial cleaning.

5.2 INITIAL CLEANING

i. Take 25-50% by volume of water in the tank. (Water quality –chlorine content shall be
less than 5ppm), then circulate the water for 30 minutes.
ii. Drain the water from the tank by opening the drain valve and system by lowest point
valves.

5.3 PASSIVATION
i. The composition of the passivating Bath shall be as follows
 5% concentrated Nitric acid/Citric acid.
 95% water with not more than 1-ppm chloride
 1.5 times the hold up volume of the distribution piping and 1.5 times the hold up
Volume of the equipment in the loop (Except tanks) or 25% volume of the tank.
Whichever is higher
ii. Start the pump to circulate the 5% nitric acid / citric acid solution for 60 Minutes at
ambient temperature
iii. Stop the pump after circulation.

iv. Drain the solution from the tank and pipelines.

5.4 FINAL CLEANING

i. Take 25-50% by volume of water in the tank. (water quality:- chlorine content shall be less
than 5ppm). Circulate the water for the period of 30 minute.
ii. Drain the water of tank by opening the drain valve and system by lowest point valves.
iii. Repeat the above procedure ( i and ii ) till we observe the conductivity 1.3 µs/cm and pH
should be 5-7.
iv. This will end the cleaning cycle.

6.0 WATER QUALITY TEST DURING FLUSHING

 Check conductivity in return line water.
 pH of the water should be between 5 to 7. Same pH to be maintain for feed and drain
water.
