REACTION PAPER

ILIAD

The Story of The Apple of Discord is the roots of the epic battle, when the Goddess of
Discord, Eris was not invited into the wedding of the sea nymph, Thetis, and the mortal
Peleus. Because of rage, she threw a golden apple to the wedding table. When the
golden apple was picked up, the following inscription was read: For the Fairest. Many
Olympian Goddesses tried to get the title, but when Zeus intervened he decided that
Paris, Prince of Troy a handsome young man should decide who's the fairest. Three
remaining Olympian Goddesses competed for the title Fairest, Hera the Queen of the
Olympian Goddesses offered Paris kingly power in exchange of the golden apple ;
Athena, the Goddess of Wisdom promised wisdom that would last forever; Aphrodite,
the Goddess of love and beauty promised him the most beautiful woman in the world.
And Paris chose Aphrodite's offer. She gave him a ship to set sail off for Sparta, where
he would see Helen, the most beautiful woman in the world. When he reached Sparta,
King Menelaus of Sparta, husband of Helen greatly welcomed him. The following days,
when Menelaus left Sparta to go to a funeral, Paris took Helen who is also in love with
him, to Troy where they were married.

The Battle between the Achaeans and the Trojans is the body of the story. King
Menelaus was enraged when he learned about the treachery of Paris, and together with
Agamemnon they are persistent on burning Troy to the ground. They gathered their best
warriors and officers to attack the Trojans, several Greek heroes led the army in the
battle: Achilles, Ajax, Diomedes, Nestor, Odysseus, and Patroclus. The battle between
Sparta and Troy raged for nine years, but the city of Troy remained unconquered because
of it's gigantic walls. Thus, the Achaeans finds another way to penetrate the city. They
overtake a town allied with Troy. During the battle the Achaeans captured two beautiful
maidens, Chryseis and Briseis. Agamemnon took Chryseis for himself, Chryseis' father
Chryses offered an enormous ransom in return for his daughter, but Agamemnon
refused.
Chryses sought the intervention of Apollo, who sent a plague to the Greek camp and
many Greek soldiers died. Because of this Agamemnon consulted the Prophet Calchas to
determine the cause of the plague, and he revealed that Chryseis was the caused of the
plague, if he wished to end the plague Agamemnon must Return Chryseis to her father.
But Agamemnon refuses to, instead he took Briseis away from Achilles and gave her
away instead. Achilles was insulted by Agamemnon's action, and because of this Achilles,
the Greatest warrior ever born, refuses to fight. Which caused the Greeks to suffer many
great losses. That last long until Achille's cousin Patroclus was killed in the battle by
Hector, the Prince of Troy. Because of this, Achilles challenged Hector into a duel.
Hector got killed in this fight after, Achilles dragged Hector's body in his chariot. During
midnight, the King of Troy, King Priam sneaked into the Spartan's base and pleaded
Achilles to give back Hector's body, and he did.

The Trojan Horse or the Wooden Horse has a big significance in the story. The Trojan
Horse lead the Greeks to their victory, as they use the Trojan Horse as a disguise to enter
the impenetrable city of Troy. They made the Trojans believe that they leave the wooden
horse as a offering to the Goddess Minerva to guide them in their safe journey back
home. They even send a man named Sinon to support their story, and make the Trojans
believe that they won the war.

The Iliad is one of the two great ancient Greek epic poems attributed to Homer. It is one
of the earliest works of literature still extensively read by modern audiences. It's impact is
still strong until to this day, the events in the story can really drag people to be
interested. The natural drama that comes with the story can make the readers to be hook
on the story. The turn of events in the story can really make the readers excite, but at the
same time moved. The Iliad was perfectly written, from the beginning to the end the
series of events in the story was perfectly aligned.

The Iliad, made me curious from the first page to the other. I imagined the story very
well because of the clear story telling. The story tells about a legendary battle that
happened thousands of years ago, so it's very fascinating to learn about the history of one
of the famous countries in the world.
